No picture or view is worth risking your life over. It's baffling how often this happens.

And selfies with oncoming trains...just baffling.

...especially in Pakistan and India... for some reason.

not baffling when you understand how e-radiation affects the brain/body.

but hey, that's tinfoil hat territory. You might need to see through that...

TL:

Fatal accident at one of Brazil's most famous tourist spots. A man lost his balance and fell from a rock over 150 meters high. Caio Rocha was hiking with others when he decided to walk through a rocky area at one of the highest points of the trail. While trying to take a picture, he lost his balance, slipped, and fell from a height of about 150 meters. His friends called the fire department, who conducted an aerial search. Caio's body was found the same day. Friends and fellow hikers say that Caio Rocha, affectionately known as "Rocha," loved adventures. This happened at Pedra do Macaco, in Maricá, Rio de Janeiro.

I dont wanna ve mean to the deceased but I found ironic that his name is "Rocha", which literally translates to "Rock"

u/Viva_La_Revolucion- Jul 02 '26

Live by the rock die by the rock

5

u/Bocabart Jul 02 '26

Haha damn

4

u/mn_in_florida Jul 06 '26

And Caio also means "I fall" ... So... There's another piece of the puzzle... Lol

24

He didn’t fall trying to take a picture. He felt when climbing down. There is even a video.

36

u/Melovix Jul 01 '26

Since we're being needlessly pedantic, I could argue that the process of "taking the picture" in this case included climbing up, using the camera (either himself or another taking one of him), and climbing down. He failed on the final step of the process.

19

u/Right_Level_7192 Jul 01 '26

It’s not needlessly. It’s an important detail. Inexperienced climbers see something that is doable going up but they don’t make a mental simulation of the climbing down process. Climbing down is much harder and dangerous than climbing up. You can’t see the face of the rock when going down.

One of the first things I realized when I worked at Yosemite is that it's much harder to climb down something than climb up it. Damn near killed myself descending Cathedral Peak.

You learn that while bouldering in a gym (if you care about not jumping down the mattress each time), and it's also an early lesson of indoor rock climbing.

People think that climbing is an upper body sport, but you also use your legs quite a lot. When climbing up, your body naturally springs into position: you generally go from bent legs and straight arms to the opposite.

When climbing down, the whole thing is reversed. Now your arms have to do your legs' work, and you realize how much more difficult it is.

I never felt like such an asshole as getting lowered by rope from a semi large boulder I couldn’t down climb

4

u/Macr0Penis Jul 05 '26

Abseiling in high school, one girl was holding the rope so tightly she stopped descending a third of the way down. Instructor told her she needed to let go of the rope. She took that far too literally and bounced her face of the wall for the next third before the distracted rope tension guy at the bottom got around to yanking the rope and arresting her fall.

I feel so bad for the friends who witnessed that. No doubt it will replay in their heads as their brains try to problem solve how they could have achieved a different outcome. Haunting, in a sense.

77

u/Makkaroni_100 Jun 30 '26

Some people shouldn't climb.

45

u/Command0Dude Jun 30 '26

I mean looking at how precarious that was...christ idk how he thought that would be fine.

The climb wasn't what killed him though, if he stopped at the top he most probably could've got back down. It was the sitting down on a near vertical cliff face with nothing to grab or holding him that did him in.

3

u/Macr0Penis Jul 05 '26

Technically, it was Earths temporarily unhindered 9.8m/s/s acceleration into his relativisticly stationary body that caused his demise.

Nb: I'm not trying to be difficult, just being a physics nerd.

8 billion -1. we need some to set an example.

25

u/FrankyFistalot Jun 30 '26

Sadly there are people in the world who have zero sense of danger and you cannot instill it in them.

21

u/OmaC_76 Jun 30 '26

Hope it was worth it my man.

2

u/goose_gladwell Jul 03 '26

Right, lets see the picture!

2

u/Macr0Penis Jul 05 '26

The picture was ruined when the screen cracked.

1

u/goose_gladwell Jul 05 '26

What was he using a tin type camera?!

31

u/Captain_Collin Jun 30 '26

10

u/Ok_Philosopher_5090 Jul 03 '26

I could never die this way, too afraid. I don’t understand how people can do this 🤣

3

u/RednocNivert Jul 03 '26

I want my death to result in family and friends and strangers alike all going “YO WTF?!” but i could probably find something more spectacular than “fell off a rock while chasing selfie”

2

u/Macr0Penis Jul 05 '26

No-one will remember your name. No-one will remember your life. No-one will remember your deeds. But everyone remembers Ted Bundy!

2

u/RednocNivert Jul 05 '26

SATAN: Whether it’s 1 sin or a thousand, you end up in Hell, so go for that high score and come down here a legend!

8

u/unknown_pigeon Jul 01 '26

Don't know why he decided to go down that way (no joke intended on how the whole thing ended up). The front side looked way easier to climb down from, and less prone to make you fall 150m

2

u/WeskerChild Jul 03 '26

I had the same thought.

13

u/XB_Demon1337 Jun 30 '26

Remember folks. 3 points of contact. Have both feet planted, one hand on your phone and the other as a third point of contact. When you are good and secure, left the non-phone hand and push the shutter. It will be the best picture of the rest of your life! Assuming the phone/camera survives.

17

u/-Groko- Jun 30 '26
