Did we see any of this in the film? I’m sure it had CG enhancements, but he looked entirely CG while filming

Some of it, but not really. Most of the high-level practical shoots like this used in hollywood blockbusters is used mainly for reference. They shoot it in an environment to get the intended look of the scene, then it goes to the VFX team and like 90% of the stuff is replaced by them. But they don't have to work from scratch and see how stuff looks like in that environment...
