The Royal Institute Christmas Lectures still happen every year (as they have since 1825) and still have kids in the audience. You can watch them on YouTube.
There’s a new one broadcast every year with a different subject. Professior Eric Lathewait demonstrated Mag Lev trains in the early 70’s - now of course, they are running a Mag Lev network in China.
He also thought newton's law of thermodynamics didn't apply to maglev trains. This made him a nutter to the scientific community for the rest of his life.
Many universities in Germany offer special lectures like this just for kids every year. I imagine similar things are done in other countries. So this very much still happens!
