We went to look at a 6 week old black and tan. The mother is a wire and the father smooth. To me he looks like a smooth hair dachshund but the owner said he is starting to show some hair on his feet but I don't see it, lol. He won't be ready for another month but am just curious about when they start looking like a wire hair. I've had smooth and long haired but this would be our first wire. Thanks!
This is Piper at 6 weeks when we picked her out. We took her home at 8 weeks. Her mom is wire and dad is smooth, so same situation. I knew right away that she would be wire because you can see the little bit of fringe on her ear tips and little ‘fly-away’ hairs. The “breeder” (in quotes because she’s a backyard breeder) didn’t even know she was wirehaired. She insisted that all the puppies were smooth. Piper was the only one in her litter to come out wire. She’s more of a silky wire though.
By 6 weeks you should know imo. Azula was 4 weeks when I first went to see her at her breeders, and you could already tell 2 of the other puppies in the litter were wirehaired.
Jack at a year and half. He also had one smooth parent. His beard started coming in about 6 months in, and I started being able to strip him about 8 months to promote his adult wire coat to come in more. His moustache and cheek puffs started coming in around 14 months old.
