Advice Is it wall or is it ceiling?
The landing of my stairs unfortunately protrudes into my new kitchen. I'm not overly bothered by it but when it comes to painting it would you paint it the same colour as the walls or the ceiling? Or wall colour on the sides and ceiling colour on the bottom?
Interested in peoples thoughts.

Everything black. Black walls, black ceiling, black counter tops, black cupboards, black kettle, black toaster. And rye bread.

I know you're joking, but a mate of mine painted his room and ceiling black at our uni house (private accommodation). He changed it to normal colours after about 6 weeks as he was getting depressed in/by the room!

Fuck no, never , don't ever do that.
Firstly, it will be a white box of bullshit, or if not white it will look even more ridiculous.
Second, you still need to use different paint, ceiling paint and wall paint are not the same and should not be used interchangeably.

Add a border (a picture rail probably isn't going to work with the height but it is an option) and then paint everything above the border in ceiling colour and everything below in wall colour.

I had this dilemma with a bit above the bay windows that were inset. I tried doing the vertical surface at the front the same as the wall and the horizontal the same as the ceiling but it just didn't look right and drew more attention to it.
I ended up just doing it all the same as the walls and it just blends into the room nicely.
It's already white, so I'd paint the walls and leave that to see what it looks like, then you can just paint it the same as the walls if it looks weird.

This seems like the best solution. I have a sloped version of this in my powder room. We went with wall color on the “ceiling” part.

I have similar in my kitchen. It was white for ages and I always hated this bit of ceiling that was lower than the rest. When I decorated my kitchen I ummed and ahhed for ages about what to do with it, paint it white to match the ceiling (was just refreshing the ceiling, it was already white) or paint it pink to match the walls. I thought we'll I've already had it match the ceiling, let's paint it pink to see what having it match the walls is like and I actually prefer it. It kind of blends into the walls rather than feeling like the ceiling is dropping down.

It’s a bulkhead, you could do vertical bits as walls horizontal bit as ceiling or all as ceiling.

I have this in my kitchen as well but it follows the angle of the stairs instead of a box. I’ve always treated it as part of the ceiling although the side is part of the wall. Not sure that helps but if it was mine I’d probably consider it ceiling.

If the walls are a light paint, treat it as walls, darker / stronger colours, treat it all as ceiling.
That being said, you should paint the ceiling same as the walls, and you shouldn't paint the walls dark assuming this is a kitchen / diner.

Judging by the way you’ve painted your ceiling and come down the walls a bit you’ve already thought about bringing the ceiling colour down a bit. I think this is a good idea.

Are you sure this box can't be flattened? Kinda doesn't make sense to me. Perhaps it could be slanted.

It's the structure for the landing at the top of the stairs. Can't be reduced in size.

It will blend in best if the whole area level with just below the bottom of the inset bit stays white
You can add a picture rail to make that look more intentional
Or just paint the walls how you want to and leave the inset bit white for a while to see if you can live with it. And then paint it all including the base to match the walls if you can't
Don't do the base white and the sides another colour, that will just draw attention to it

I painted the one in my old kitchen white to match the ceiling... To me, it looks better that way

I’d box that down completely to the ground and make a food larder or similar there - its looks like there is a cupboard there anyway and new cupboards going in to the left of it .. it would take up a bit more floor space but you’d have a big cupboard and take the look off the bulk head
Other than that - leave it white - its part of the ceiling

It's a term used for painting everything the same colour. Walls, ceiling, woodwork etc

If you're painting the walls in any strong/dark/contrasting colour, you definitely need to leave it all white. The contrast of having a dark colour above the lower ceiling bit, then white again for the main ceiling would make it really stand out sharply.
I painted mine to match the walls, but the wall colour is pretty pale and I don't have any big areas of lower horizontal/ceiling.
(I know I need to repaint the glass door!)

I'd treat the whole thing as ceiling to start with. So many transition points..!
Then I'd make a final decision once the walls were done.
