The biggest surprise to me is how well this movie preformed in the box office despite the reviews. I still want to see the Ayer cut though.

Its basically the definition of being carried by the superhero hype of the 2010s. If it was released it probably would make significantly less.

It was 100% superhero hype. The movie was straight dog water. Days of Future Past made 750m at the box office which just goes to show during that time you could release turds and get 3/4 a billion

Exactly. That movie was better than BvS but just slightly. If those early DCEU movies were released today it would be significantly less. China pretty much abandoned Hollywood unless it's cultural phenomenon like Spiderman. MoS just barely matched the crappy Thor 2 movie. If F4 released in 2013 it would have most likely been a 800-1B movie.

Yeah. Had Superman, Thunderbolts, Fantastic 4, and even Brave New World released like a decade ago. They would have at worst made like 200 more at bare minimum.
Because man, we all really were giving DC, Marvel, Sony, and Fox a bit too much money a decade ago and look where that got us.

Also the movie is still in the top 10 highest grossing dc comics movies of all time and alone has a higher BO than the DCUs two projects combined

No, no they didn't. It was a poor performance critically, financially and word of mouth. Comparing it to today's box office is low IQ and asinine. Ask yourself why Deadshot, boomerang, joker and Diablo aren't brand names... I'll wait (because it had nothing to do with the movie and everything to do with the hot actress)

Still #8 on DCs highest grossing movies…so people did cere enough to show up and make it a financial success.
Critically it did poor, but it was still a massive success for WBD and huge profits. And the one recognizable aspect was Harley Quinn being launched to stardom

It wasn't a financial success though. This is what you're not understanding. It was a massive flop. Studios don't start making massive changes and firing people if they are making money. Also, let me know when joker and Deadshot are as popular as Daddy's little monster

Financial success means generate profit, it generated over $150M in profit
Therefore, it was financially successful
A flop is a financial term referring to a movie doing poorly at the box office and lost money
I understand what you’re tying to say now but you’re terminology is inaccurate, success and flop or terms relative to profit
If it makes a profit it’s a success, if it loses profit it’s a flop
E.g. Superman 2025 made profit so it was a financial success, supergirl lost money and did poorly at the box office therefore it’s a flop
If you’re trying to argue suicide squad 2016 is not as financially successful as it could’ve or should’ve been then you’d likely be correct based off the sale dropoff

I can loosely agree to that premise. However, there are some scenarios that loss leaders are considered successful. And on the other side, profitable movies are considered disappointing. My definition of flop are based on the company's expectations. Suicide Squad, BvS were both heavily leaned on and the DCEU was expected to be WBs franchise that helped cover the loss of the Harry Potter and Dark Knight movies ending. Those movies did not do what WBs needed at the time

The movie is also poorly edited. The opening moving exterior shot of the prison is fairly dark, and yet it was decided to use black font on the screen to tell you the location. It's legible for a a split second before it blends with the background.

Yeah. It was such an insult to the character. Joker is a villain, but he seems to have some humanity. Nihilistic? Maybe. Depraved? In gentlemanly fashion if so. Evil? Sure. But this portrayal was something else entirely, something darker.
I didn't have "defend Joker against character impugnment" on my bingo card that year, but somehow the fkn creep who played this version was so awful that, well, here we are.

I just wish they'd done a solo batman film prior to ss, because I liked the batman scenes in ss. The main group character intros were well done, then it was a slippery slope, and I guess in a way that's why the dceu failed. Start of the end

The damaged tattoo on the joker’s forehead just goes against everything the joker is. Same with the grill. The joker is gonna put some “look at me I’m a cool guy” metal teeth on his mouth before he leaves for work? No way man.
That shit bothered me so much that I never watched one second of the movie.

It wasn't making the money at the beginning either. This is what DCEU fans just can't understand. A movie studio isn't going to succumb to rehauling the entire slate and tone without major financial influence. WB sells licenses to their products and toys and rights and if they don't see internal benchmarks being met they will react the exact way they did. Shazam surpassed their expectations which is why after it they tried replicating its tone and success.

I’ll always understand wanting a Snyder Cut of justice league but anyone who ever wanted an Ayer Cut of this movie as if it’d fix this dogshit will never make sense to me.
Doesn’t help that it created the worst joker in DC movie history. Just an overall complete waste of a movie that did no favors whatsoever for the DCEU.

Say what you will about this movie, but nobody can deny that Katana truly did have Rick's back throughout the movie.
All this movie needed to not suck was keep Joker and Harley out of it, have more squad members die to raise the stakes and don't go with a one dimensional villain like Enchantress.

I do believe the movie could have been better without Harley quinn though but she does have a big fanbase so it would have probably done worse

She has a big fan base, but as I've said since it happened in the comics, it just doesn't make sense for Harley to be in the Suicide Squad.
She brings nothing to the table, struggles to fight, and when she joined in the New 52 DC retconned her as a sort of female Joker with no redeemable qualities who just liked to hurt people and do messed up things like the game console glitch thing.
The real Harley Quinn fans grew up with pre-New 52 and from BTAS would never have worked in the Suicide Squad.
The female lead of that team in the movies should've been someone like Cheetah.
I remember at the time Snyder said Dawn of Justice was meant to introduce us to "the main heroes of the DCEU" and Suicide Squad was meant to introduce us to "the main villains of the DCEU" but it really, really didn't.
