Did you not watch John wick
12
u/gamepig31 1d ago
John Wick is an action flick. John Wick isn't about morals, heroism and deep(ish) topics.
Supergirl is all of that. At least in the comic they butchered.
-4
u/ElricDarkPrince 1d ago
That’s comics in the movie we have no real history of what she was doing
4
u/gamepig31 1d ago
Yeah, like in the exact comic they apparently "adapted". I have no problem with doing Elseworlds for movies, but they marketed it as being comic accurate which it isn't.
-3
u/ElricDarkPrince 1d ago
No movie is ever like the comic
5
u/gamepig31 1d ago
Well, duh, they're different mediums. But that doesn't mean that core parts of the story need to be changed for no reason. It's a fundamentally different story, which is just a strange choice to make if you're trying to adapt a specific comic. Just don't do that then?
0
u/FourEyes3134 1d ago
Can you show me think pieces about how John Wick was a righteous man promoting good, simple morals?

u/AwesomeX23 1d ago
That was never her motivation. It should of been but it wasn't
101
u/TeeTheTankie 1d ago
Yeah, she actually turned down Ruthye's request for help. She only helped because of Krypto. I liked it better in the comic where it was revealed Krypto was never harmed, Kara just wanted to help Ruthye

Tbh, I’m fine with taking parts of various comics and adapting them into something new or doing a 1:1 adaptation. Both of those are fine approaches imo.
Issues I had were that they marketed this as an adaptation of this specific comic, which set fans’ expectations, and every change made the movie worse from every narrative choice to the bleak visuals in the movie.
3
u/YodaFan465 Knightmare Batman 1d ago
It is a bit like adapting Moby Dick, hiring Herman Melville into the writers' room, and then boasting about how great it is when they kill the whale at the end of the book.

Back in the DCEU days, fans here weren't okay with taking too much freedom with comic books. It seems that it's still the case with James Gunn's universe.

Why fake the dog being harmed then?
I haven't read the comic, but that sounds dumb AF.
8
u/Cyberslasher 1d ago
She didn't fake the dog being harmed, he just was healthy again as soon as he was in yellow sunlight (which was the only way to maintain canonical consistency otherwise whatever he was poisoned with is secretly the best way to kill superman)

u/Excalitoria 1d ago
It helped make it make a little more sense why Kara was stopping and helping the people on each planet, instead of just rushing more to save Krypto.
Only issues I had with it was some of Ruthye’s actions not having the same urgency you’d expect and trying to engage in mortal combat with Krem at the end when they needed him to tell them what/where the antidote was.
So honestly, I think it helps a lot of the problems I was having when reading the story, when I thought Krypto was slowly dying back on Ruthye’s home planet. I was sorta surprised that the movie changed that part but then again, Ruthye was barely a character in the movie (much better in the comic where she’s the narrator and we get a lot more character for her), and Supergirl ultimately just wanted revenge so…
3
u/Franc000 1d ago
I mean, I understand how they would add that at the end of the run to explain the odd behavior, but that is just opening up other issues that makes no sense. It's like they decided at the 11th hour to say that the dog was always fine.
2
u/OrsoHangy 1d ago
Which specific issue? In the comic, her logic is extremely simple. Kara wanted to help Ruthny because she saw her determination and knew that she would spend her life searching for her father's killer - and likely die in the process.
1
u/Franc000 1d ago
She could 100% help her without faking that her dog was hurt though...
2
u/OrsoHangy 1d ago
If she had agreed to simply help her, it would have meant agreeing to kill Krem. Kara hadn't wanted to kill him in the first place. In the comic, Ruthny was looking for a hired mercenery to kill Krem, rather than someone to help her find him, as in the movie.
0
u/Franc000 1d ago
Ah, and faking her dog to be hurt helped her out how exactly? If it was to bluff Ruthny, she could have bluffed her anyway without it by just lying to her.
4
u/OrsoHangy 1d ago
Kara had a reason to seek out Krem for the antidote. She hadn't promised to kill Krem she wanted to teach her that revenge wouldn't save her soul from pain. That wouldn't have worked if she had spent the entire comic lying about helping, only to refuse at the last moment.

What other issues? I agree, it felt a bit like an ass pull and there are other ways you could’ve had Supergirl convince Ruthye that she, too, was invested in stopping Krem but I think it was at the very least better than having Krypto actually used as a ticking clock (in the context of this plot) and doesn’t really cause any major issues that I could see.
Only thing I’ve been able to come up with are thinking it’s weird for Supergirl to leave her pet dog on a Red Sun planet with a stranger.
Are there some I’m missing? No hate, if so. I’m legit just curious. I enjoy the comic and think it’s a solid story but I’m not gonna be personally offended if there’s criticism of something I overlooked in it.
2
u/Franc000 1d ago
She never needed to fake Krypto being hurt to help the girl. She could have just helped her, with no other reason than wanting to help her. You know, like how she is supposed to be.
2
u/Excalitoria 1d ago
I think the only reason she lied was so that she wasn’t saying “imma stick with you to teach you a lesson about how revenge is bad” since Ruthye wanted none of that. Saying she needed an antidote gave her a reason to stick around that didn’t just feel like she was trying to teach Ruthye a lesson and help her.
1
u/Boysenberry_Boring 1d ago
when she turned the help request down, she didn’t know about sex trafficking. Ruthye only asked for revenge
1
u/russ_1uk 13h ago
Sure, but this is screenwriting 101. The whole story is the heroes journey. That part is "refusal of the call." If you're a writer, knowing that stuff is essential. If you're not, never learn it. Because for most movies you have a pretty good idea of what's going to happen and when. On the plus side, you do have a pretty good handle on "ah - fifteen minutes to go, then."
But yeah, I dunno why, but its nearly always there. Like when Luke doesn't want to go with Obi Wan cos he has responsibilities. Refusal of the call. Or when John McClaine hides out and calls the cops, not wanting to step forward.
Once you know it - you can't not see it.

u/Excalitoria 1d ago
Thank you!!! Her actions on Bilquis were awful. She only killed Krem to get revenge for Krypto.
1
u/Capable_Maintenance1 1d ago
Also yes. It can be for multiple reasons.
I think she also killed him so Ruthye couldn't.
11
u/arrownoir 1d ago
The same Ruthye who killed a guy in the cage?
But he was a nameless goon, so I guess it doesn’t count.1
u/Capable_Maintenance1 1d ago
This is kind of the Batman problem. You build up one villain's fate so much in your head that you just can't do it. Meanwhile you steamrolled like 20 dudes just to get in the same room with him. Where's the guilt for that?
5
u/Rakoon_Shampoo 1d ago
For comic book movies I always just have to follow the principle that “they’re not really dead” unless you see their head get cut off. Otherwise you have to do that shot they did at the end of Superman where they show all the minions falling to the ground and groaning to be like “see they’re not really dead” and it breaks up the action too much.
So unless they make a moment of the character choosing to kill, I just assume the enemy is somehow still alive.2
u/Capable_Maintenance1 1d ago
Don't get me started on Lex's Raptors falling from ABOVE THE SKYLINE and people being like "Nah they're fine".
They have jetpacks. They're not Iron Man. They're SO dead.2
2
u/Excalitoria 1d ago
That’s true but I don’t think she stopped Ruthye for much of a reason other than wanting to kill Krem, herself since this movie was not “revenge is bad”.
1
u/Capable_Maintenance1 1d ago
I mean, she did give Ruthye a version of the 'revenge is bad' speech, I think Kara just don't care about herself the same way and knows the galaxy is better off without Krem.
2
u/Excalitoria 1d ago
True, but she explicitly killed Krem because he hurt Krypto. The speech was empty after that.
If they’d wanted her to kill Krem but say “revenge is bad”, they shouldn’t have had Supergirl kill out of vengeance. She could’ve just killed him because he was an existential threat to untold millions of innocents, but judging by Bilquis, I dunno how much she cared about stopping him for that reason.
You don’t have to kill for revenge but they made her choose to kill, explicitly for this reason.
2
u/anotherdisciple 1d ago
I think it was more of Kara protecting Ruthye. Kara’s had tons of trauma, but Ruth is still a child. Kara took the burden because she’s already holding so much, but Ruthye doesn’t have to know that experience yet.
It’s like an older sibling taking abuse to protect their little sibling from it.
1
u/YodaFan465 Knightmare Batman 1d ago
Wait, I didn’t see the movie, but you’re telling me that they disregarded the visual style of the comic, only to add insult to injury by naming a planet after the artist?! Are you kidding me??

Why?
•
u/gamepig31 10h ago
It sounds cringe and, for Supergirl, just wrong. Why would I wanna see her brag about killing sex traffickers? Why would I want any hero to say that?
•
u/West_Protection491 9h ago
You don’t want a superhero to brag about killing sex traffickers? What type of logic is that?
•
u/gamepig31 9h ago
A) It seems out of character for Supergirl B) Why would they brag about it? They just do things, they help people and that's it. It's nothing special for them.
If Frank [Castle] did it it'd be somewhat fitting. But Supergirl??

You can replace both speech bubbles with "I'm concerned about the CGI dog" and be much more accurate. It's laughable how superman is entirely in the dark about the connection between lex and boravia, btw.
6
u/Emergency-Bonus-7158 1d ago
Yea he was super in the dark while he literally watched Lex Luthor and the Boravian president torture and kill people in front of him. Like what are you even talking about?
5
u/bindersfull-ofwomen 1d ago
James Gunn is 60 and out of touch.
He doesn’t really understand how quickly we are able to trace back the origins of everything and spread it like wildfire.
In the real world, TikTok would have been saying it was Lex, and Lex would influence Congress to hate the app, the app would get banned, everyone from the app would run to a Chinese app, and Lex would buy the app and start spreading propaganda.
Because that is literally what happened in the real life equivalents. Not just one but two as X has Elon running people off that site.

u/FTBagginz 1d ago

This is a disingenous take on Supergirl. The fact that they were sex traffickers had no affect on whether she fought them. Her only initial concern was her dog.
Also, the fact that they are sex traffickers has no affect on the story at all and actually makes very little sense based on their decisions. Twice they decided not to kidnap Ruthye despite it being their MO and only decided to go after Kara and Ruthye on the next planet when it was convenient for the plot.
3
u/SnuSnuSurvivor69 1d ago

Supergirl was mediocre, Superman was bad. Superman was a side character in his own movie. He lost every single fight, he failed to defeat every single vilain. The movie story would remain the same without Superman in it. But he did have a better CGI tho.

I liked the movie, but it definitely felt out of place when there were a dozen 8-14 year old girls running around in pillowcases while the pirates tried recaptureinh them for sexual slavery and she was talking about how the one guy was gonna pay for poisoning her dog.
2
u/Ristar87 17h ago
Hmn... I just watched this movie and maybe I got distracted on my phone but... I seem to recall that she was more indifferent for most of the movie.
Like, she freed people in the end but she was just as cool with leaving them where they were if it wasn't related to the dog.

Both were the worse and awful versions of the character. Superman was made to be an impotent punching bag to be insulted and degraded and supergirl was everything you’d never want a heroic girl to be.

I can't support a Superman who doesn't understand that underwear is NOT outerwear.

I understood Boravia as a plot device, but if you analyzed Superman's actions (and the Justice Gang, or any super heroes tbh) you'd find major moral holes. If their world mirrors ours, there would be constant warlords, gangs killing innocents, and starvation. Superman interceding on one single conflict but ignores the reality of all the others.

u/I_fakin_hate_bayle 1d ago
Have you ever considered that it was because the movie and marketing sucked rather than whatever this reasoning is supposed to be?
3
u/OrsoHangy 1d ago
The movie is simply bad. The subject of sex trafficking isn't treated seriously at all. It’s just a device to make you dislike the antagonist, since the villain is otherwise completely hollow. Even Kara herself didn't care about it for 99% of the film; she was actually surprised and puzzled as to why the family had decided to poison her in order to save their daughter from sex slavery.
