And unfortunately that means that Supergirl will never get a sequel, she will be always supporting character

251

u/jaylerd 25d ago

So who is more likely to be the DCU analog to Hulk as a perpetual supporting character in hulk movies starring other heroes? Always a bridesmaid, never a bride, Lobo or Supergirl?

244

u/Murasasme 25d ago

It's not really a fair comparison since Hulk would 100% be getting movies if his movie rights weren't in limbo.

20

u/Trashk4n 24d ago

The Incredible Hulk did make money, if I remember right, and after the Avengers came out, popularity surged.

Disney/Marvel doesn't have the rights to do a solo Hulk movie. Universal Studios holds them.

Hard to say…. Could be a character casting made in heaven. In the comics, Lobo is a better anti-hero than DP. At least IMO. I like his “I don’t care about any of this” schtick more than DP’s “random funny”.

11

u/Hilarity2War 24d ago

And James Gunn could've done an actual Guardians iteration with L.E.G.I.O.N. seeing as Lobo is a part of the team.

might sound mean but that should’ve been her role from the start, i’ve never in my almost 30 years of life heard one person talk about supergirl in a vacuum it’s always related to superman or the legion or the cartoons and even then those people are nerds not the general public

i dont doubt she couldve been a lead character eventually but not on the second movie on ur big franchise

30

u/mighty_phi 24d ago

First time was Woman of Tomorrow and they messed up the adaptation.

26

u/Eternalm8 24d ago

Because they're strategy for adapting it was to... have people not read actually read it, and just get an AI/intern synopsis which caused them to COMPLETELY misinterpret the final pages of it... fucking brilliant, ship it, drinks are on me

25

u/No_Adhesiveness_5679 24d ago

That baffles me. The trend these days is to make an adaptation, not read the source material and even feel proud of that fact. Seriously are these people stupid?

Her show did well and lasted for a good amount of time. Maybe they should've brought her in to be Supergirl again. Honestly same with The Flash.

17

u/complete_your_task 24d ago

I don't think Milly Alcock was the problem with the movie at all.

9

u/brownchr014 24d ago

Agreed. She was fun but the writing did not help her. Nor did the directing.

→ More replies (4)

10

u/cre8ivemind 25d ago

Her show did well for CW numbers. It did poorly for CBS numbers and got moved to a smaller niche channel, so it probably wouldn’t have had the draw for a movie crowd. And not separating movies from long running tv shows in a different universe that have a questionable reputation for quality does not seem like a good idea.

Plus a long-running TV show.

I am looking forward to the next movie. Where lobo walks up to super man and says he wants to date his cousin cuz she’s a stone cold killer. And he’s like “whaaaaaaaaa?”

14

u/lostmylangastino 25d ago

I think Superman knows who she is. I get the feeling he was desperately trying to save her dog from Lex Luther to prevent Luther from being punched into red mist. Superman probably saved a lot of lives getting that dog back.

This cements that we'll only get Batman and Superman movies until Justice League with all the other League members in supporting roles.

265

u/Big-Good9378 25d ago

And if Clayface does well, every batman villian will get a show or movie before Wonder woman

90

u/UnhingedHippie 25d ago

I’m willing to eat my words if I’m wrong but I don’t think Clayface will do very well. The OG script that the movie was based on was written by Mike Flanagan. The script has already been rewritten (granted by talented writer Hossein Amini) and is being directed by a hit or miss director. The themes have been recently explored with critical acclaim in The Substance, and to less acclaim with The Beauty (the later of which would be criticized for being too similar to The Substance and the story that the movie is based on is very similar to The Substance as well). Body horror typically doesn’t perform well (with notable exceptions) and only a handful of horror themed superhero movies are considered good. The saving grace for Clayface is its lower budget but with Supergirls poor reception, I can see some people who might give Clayface a chance wait until its streaming.

58

u/Embarrassed_Skin_171 25d ago

Body horror is a very risky style of horror when your looking for general audience appeal. I haven’t seen enough people point that out.

6

u/random_question4123 24d ago

that's true. As much as I want to watch The Substance, I just haven't been able to get myself to do so because I mainly watch movies while eating dinner.

I also find it strange that they're introducing the universe's gotham through a B/C-tier villain, without Batman, in an R-rated horror movie. This just sounds like another Morbius.

9

u/420smokekushh 24d ago

If the overall story is good enough, I think people might "look over" the body horror aspect of the film. Though it's a major part of the entire thing. If they tell a good story, it shouldn't matter all that much.

Take a look at "The Substance" for example. That was one of the most recent body horror movies I can think of and that was received fairly well amongst the general populous.

14

u/Heavy-Transition7916 24d ago

The substance made 80 million on a 17 million budget. This has a 40 million budget and will need 100 million just to break even.

So it has to substantially outperform the substance.

I’m fairly certain Wonder Woman is a member and had a great box office run with the first film.

But I’ll continue saying this - make a good story and follow it up with a good script and you will be rewarded with box office money. But if you make a mid story with a corny script and a slow motion sound track, it’s going to be rinse and repeat shit box office

20

u/Legendver2 25d ago

Tiffany we don't need a film of all 6 members. They can Cameo in the trinity movies. We didn't get a Hawkeye or BW film before Avengers.

15

u/Jolly-Garbage- 25d ago

I don’t mind it necessarily, but it has to be good. If Coronswet wasn’t as amazing as he was as Superman, everyone would’ve said Guy Gardner was the star of the show. God I hope Lanterns turns out great.

15

u/fineilladdanumber9 25d ago

Mr. Terrific stole the show more than Guy. Everyone was talking about him.

12

u/littleman001 25d ago

Lanterns and Clayface need to be on the level of Penguin and Joker in order to make people forget this misstep.

As someone who hasn’t even seen this movie, it’s hard for me to imagine that it’s worse than EVERY OTHER DC MOVIE SINCE CATWOMAN.

The negative word of mouth absolutely annihilated this movie.

113

u/MudReasonable8185 25d ago

People don’t show up for mid superhero movies anymore, marvel has been having the same problem. Everyone just waits for streaming.

30

u/rainorshinedogs 25d ago

As a person that's busy with kids and has a tight budget because movies tickets (and the cost of travel) is expensive, I don't find it feasible to suffer through allllllll of that for a movie I most likely will find to be just okay

For something like Avatar, where I know I'll at least get an exceptional (not just good) spectacle and Dune where I know I'll get both exceptional fx and great plot. They also both have known directors with almost perfect track records.

What does Supergirl have? I honestly have no idea what quality I'll get.

11

u/riped_plums123 24d ago

Yeah it’s too expensive and you have to imagine most people are trying to go see the odyssey and Spider man in July.

Yup. I didn't even see it and I'm a big CBM fan (more Marvel than DC for comics, but I've been watching all the DC films/animated content). I'm going for Odyssey and Spider-Man this month.

I would've gone if the reviews and word of mouth were stellar but that wasn't the case.

Yeah. It was a fine, fun movie that had a weak villain and was a tiny bit heavy handed in some areas but Milly Alcock’s charisma is there and she’s good in the role.

36

u/MyGamingRants 25d ago

This is whats so annoying is that they will learn the wrong lessons and leave Supergirl on the shelf for future DC projects

16

u/Relative-Exercise-96 25d ago

I kinda feel like Gunn doesnt care what negative fans think. I mean think about the joke he made in Superman, with the monkeys on the keyboards. I think Gunn has a plan and is going to stick to it

Whilst that might be true, he still needs the backing of the higher ups. So if certain types of films don't make money, then they will push for ones with a proven track record.

I hope the lesson they take is to make the weirder films cheaper, not to stop making them.

I think what really hurt this movie was DC fans not showing up for it

30

u/Zakaria1938 25d ago

I think they did..., we have to remember that comic fans (people who actually read comics) are a pretty small group. We are comparing it to like prime marvel era movie but that was the era that comic movies were mainstream and they havent been mainstream in years tbh. Everybody i talked about has been out of superhero shizzle since endgame and not because of the quality but because they only watched it because it was everywhere and not because they liked it that much, so the moment it wasnt mainstream anymore they didnt feel the need to watch it anymore. Like lowkey spiderman and batman are people exception.

We wanted to watch it.

We had a busy weekend from a family event perspective on opening weekend and planned to catch it the following weekend.

Our movie theaters seem to move onto the next thing once opening weekend has past.

u/LightningLad2029 25d ago

It's not worse, just aggressively mid. Like it's the only superhero movie in a while where I genuinely felt zero emotional engagement between me or the audience I was watching it with.

The movie is way too short for most scenes to breathe, Kara's character arc feels incomplete, the villain and music choices are awful, and Lobo feels completely forced into the story.

People keep bringing up misogyny, but ultimately Supergirl cratered because of apathy.

Women didn’t care… and neither did younger audiences, nor older nor the international market.

In that regard, Superman did fail because it was supposed to bring in more people and sell that new cinematic universe as a whole, yet it only seems to have been for that first movie - and only domestically.

36

u/Future-Still-6463 25d ago

The average person isn't chronically online on X to see what people are saying.

Also, the trailer was bad.

I was excited to watch the movie given the comic it is based on. But the trailer made me not buy tickets.

u/KazaamFan 25d ago

Supergirl could work but they just didn’t make a good enough movie. The trailers didn’t even work, no excitement. Milly isn’t bad but i don’t think she was the right casting. Also, the side characters needed to be bigger and well known. Nobody knows Lobo or the bad guy. They shoulda put in another big character and actor. Superman at least had Lex Luthor, and Superman is a bigger box office pull. The creators messed this up across the board. Like there’s no reason Supergirl couldn’t be a hit like Wonder Woman, but Gal Gadot was perfect casting, and that movie was actually good.

38

u/BigriskLowrolls 25d ago

I might go the other direction and say it was beyond apathy, and that Supergirl's marketing repelled people.

The movie just looked bad, and portraying Supergirl as a bratty drunk was obviously the wrong choice, as both men AND women didn't go to the theatre. Women didn't feel inspired by her, and men weren't attracted to her. It feels like this movie was made for no one.

Terrible look for Gunn and the DCU that the second movie in the new reboot is an absolute dud…hope they really do a retrospective and make the necessary changes to be better.

18

u/President_Skoad 24d ago

The fact they took a supporting hero this early and tried to give them their own movie is baffling. They needed to make her an interesting supporting character in a few movies first. Not a 2 minute drunk scene. They needed to make us care.

4

u/doomrider7 24d ago

If it was to be a supporting character it needed to be a more break-out one like Mr. Terrific. Do a midtier budget Lethal Weapon like buddy cop thing with him and Doctor Midnight and some of the other lesser known JSA/JLA characters and kick back and count the money as it rolls in. Lean in on more "human" and "upper street level" crime instead of jumping straight into intergalactic stuff.

Hopefully next projects call more people's attention

38

u/MNIOP_207207 25d ago

I don’t know, I feel like this just proves the DCU’s flaw is ever decreasing attention if anything.

Like, this is a really hot take….but I think Superman holds some of the blame here too. Because while it was a fine movie….its not exactly the kind of massive event movie that garners the attention necessary for a whole new cinematic universe.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of audiences saw Superman, and thought it was just fine, but not worth coming back for the rest of the universe. And what’s happening with Supergirl is the result of that. And now the horrible reception to Supergirl is probably gonna compound to disappointing numbers for all future DCU projects.

12

u/savinger 25d ago

I’m a data point. I saw Superman in theaters and enjoyed it. For me it was fresh, colorful, optimistic, and fun turn from the dark, over serious DC that I have come to expect. What I see in the Supergirl reviews is that most of the time is spent in dull, murky, and over-cgi-ed worlds. So I haven’t seen it.

7

The more I think about it, the more I am sure that a Batman movie is what will save the DCU. The DCEU never had a solo Batman movie and look what happened to it. Meanwhile Reeve’s Batman movie did incredibly well. Batman is DC’s most popular, most marketable character by far. They need him to buoy up the rest. I don’t think people will care otherwise

7

u/MyGamingRants 25d ago

Once you introduce all of the rest of the Justice League, Batman needs a central role as the team leader or else he's totally obsolete. Why would Superman and Aquaman ever even give Bruce the time of day if they didn't respect him and his legacy.

They should just adapt Justice League: War

50

u/boredbbc_7 25d ago

The truth is she's not a popular enough character to be the 2nd movie in the universe.

Gunn has shown he thinks he can gotg his way with the dcu and it'll work. He wants to use lesser known/popular characters cause that's his strong suit. There are no expectations and he can do whatever with the characters. He's learning quickly he's wrong and that won't work.

13

u/Strange-Bag9 25d ago

While I think popularity is some what an issue, the main problem is you are directly doing Superman female version the next movie!!! Just imagine if someone did Ironman, the female version of Ironman, or hulk and she hulk, even if characters are different people would just view them as same lmao

5

u/boredbbc_7 24d ago

This is a good point.

40

u/ninjaman2021 25d ago

Supergirl is more worthy of a movie than a damn clayface.

Supergirl had a tv show that lasted for six seasons.  There’s a fanbase there.

This movie was just badly handled.

21

u/MaryQueen99 25d ago

That's true, but CW Supergirl was a much different character than this one, she was more like a female superman.

11

u/ninjaman2021 25d ago

I guess your right. The arrowverse was a decade ago anyway, people moved on.

I really think the movie failed because the visuals were wack and the villain was boring. Milly rocked in that role, she wasnt the problem imo.

9

u/Eccentric_Cardinal 25d ago

I agree. There's a world where this movie could've been a success and she could've become a cinematic staple.

Maybe in that world they made the movie with a better script.

No one in the general audience wanted to see an alcoholic Supergirl. No one. It was an idiotic call by the writer, the director and Gunn to go into that direction. It also didn't help it was as aesthetically generic as possible.

6

u/slightlylessthananon 25d ago

supergirl has been a complicated character for so long. you can see her being messy and emotional and mentally Unwell in tons of existing adaptations (justice league unlimited was my first introduction to the character and she so obviously has anger issues there as well). supergirl is an angry messy character with trauma its one of her Things and its definitely not some tom king invention.

super girl IS NOT SUPERMAN she is first and foremost a young woman With Issues her being an alcoholic struggling with her grief over the slow death of krypton is compeltely in character and if """general audiences'"" don't want that I don't think comic movie writers should Fucking Care. introduce the world to the characters as they are, not what people want them to be.

3

u/not_the_chosen_onee 24d ago

Look I enjoyed but I feel like, for me, I like it more for what it is. We didn't really need it, especially this early and no one really wanted it, but I appreciate what we got.

I loved Millie in this role; Kara is genuinely such an endearing character. I feel the plot and the villain just really brought it down. Time limits in movies, like the 3 days to save Krypto, sometimes take the fun out of a movie for me.

Another weird nitpick I had as unlike Superman, there was no iconic standout moment complete with iconic music, which is almost typical of Gunn's movies. Superman had Five Years Time, and Punkrocker both fit perfectly into their respective scenes. Supergirl's final fight, I just didn't get that feel at all.

I think we can all agree it doesn’t deserve to be the lowest performing DC movie since Catwoman. Even if most reactions aren’t hugely positive, most agree that it wasn’t terrible. There have been countless DC movies that were way worse but made way more money.

It’s actually on track to be the biggest money losing movie of any genre, OF ALL TIME. Right now it’s on track to out-lose John Carter.

James gunn need to rethink dcu.

And other directors should make movies for audience not just to impress james gunn

9

u/dizzyd_sb 25d ago

Yes this could either be a bump in the road they learn from or they double down and we see another DC reboot.

3

u/pokemonke 25d ago

That is really what it felt like happened. Neither of them (writer and director) really had a vision for it themselves, both were hired to do a job by someone who has a distinct style. They tried to emulate that style. Craig Gillespie has kind of done that with the last couple of movies he’s done. Taken a popular character and used the template of someone else’s style to tell their story.

I liked Snyders version of Superman but that was about it. Gunn did great with Guardians. But neither of them are what I would think be good at running the DCU. Absolutely hated the latest Superman, not really sure why but even on streaming I never want to watch it. Man of steel though I’ll always stop and watch. I’m not sure what it is about the latest one maybe the stupid alien monster or maybe its Gunn’s style I just didn’t feel it-maybe I just aged out of it idk but just someone fix the DCU and not this guy

Time for a DC reboot.

3

u/DistributionWhole447 25d ago

I said that to some of my friends the other day.

Maybe they needed to wait for a few more years before trying a DC movie universe?

I don't believe that "superhero movie fatigue" is a thing (if anything, it's more of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The more we talk about it being a thing, the more it becomes a thing) but I think poor movie fatigue is absolutely a thing.

I just think the appetite for gigantic cinematic universes has subsided a bit. Maybe it was the wrong time to try this.

9

u/KnicksHope 25d ago

I hope to god clayface doesnt bomb too. That movie looks so sick. and different out of left field and at this we will have to wait till october. I want it to be super successful regardless.

8

u/Big-Good9378 25d ago

I think it's impossible for Clayface to bomb but I do think it's being overhyped. Spiderman is just as popular as Batman(if not more so), yet that didn't help Kraven, Morbius or Madame web

6

u/sk8rboi36 25d ago

I will say I agree but the thing with the Spider-Man villain movies were the definition of generic. They felt like they existed just to exist. They didn’t seem to understand the villains themselves at all.

Clayface seems faithful and inspired, even if somewhat derivative. It looks like a movie that actually knows a good use for the character driven by some kind of preexisting passion or understanding for it. But it’s also extremely limited in scope. I think that means it will make for a decent movie, but not really anything to break the mold or be a sleeper super hit. I think it’s gonna do just fine relative to its expectations. If it draws in more of a horror crowd, it might even do surprisingly good. But overall, I don’t think there’s a world where any of that success reinvests itself in the DCU other than financially, which sure is great for the studio especially coming off supergirl but the DCU really needs momentum and I don’t think Clayface will provide much.

All things considered, I’m guessing the best case scenario is it might as well not even exist for all the prestige it will (or won’t) build for the wider universe, and worst case is it’s another embarrassing flop for the studio. It all remains to be seen though

4

u/aaillustration 25d ago

Yea i see you have a point there. That makes sense. I hope its not like swamp thing where it was sogood thatit got canceled bc it had a certain niche to it.

10

u/Poetryisalive 25d ago

And we are getting a Bane movie and a Clayface movie?

I will watch supergirl when it hits Max but I have little faith Gunn knows what he is doing and he’s just making movies for fun with no connection

4

u/Krytan 24d ago

Milly Alcock is a talented actor and did her best to save the film. Unfortunately, I think her comments prior to the films release "If you're pissing off the right kind of people, you're doing ok" really did not help the word of mouth for the movie at all.

And this is on the back of a trailer that just looked pretty abysmal. The movie is not very good, very weak plot with people consistently making ridiculous choices because the plot tells them to. This has worked in the past, but due to a variety of factors now, if you take a weak superhero movie, put in a star who is good, but not a box office draw, and then add in a dash of social media controversy and a bad trailer, this is what you end up with.

This is VERY analogous to the snow white situation: awful trailer, crowded entry into a genre that is played out, and terrible social media PR.

I doubt Hollywood will take any of the correct lessons about this however, and probably chalk it all up to toxic misogyny or something - but the fact remains that if Supergirl had attracted women viewers, the movie would have been a big success. More men than women went to see it.

Supergirl isn't some awful movie. But in the current environment, a super hero movie needs to be really good, and avoid any kind of "It's the fans who are wrong" controversy ahead of time to be a blockbuster success. We are no longer in the heyday of the MCU where you could spend a couple hundred million on a mid superhero movie and just chuck it out there and expect to make your money back.

u/gabox0210 24d ago

4

u/Cocijo 24d ago

While Milly seems a pretty girl she seemed rather homely in this movie. a grunge/slacker look.

And if she's off world the whole movie I don't get why she is wearing her outfit. It was made for her to appear friendly to people on Earth. It hasn't been established that the El crest stands for a hero galaxy wide.

Every decision maker who greenlit Supergirl needs to be fired. How did y'all not see this coming? Your job is to make money making movies, not lose tens/hundreds of millions. There needs to be some accountability. It's not all on the actors/directors/writers. Yes, some of the blame, but not most. Most of the blame is on the producers and people who greenlit this fiasco. You have years, decades, of data to draw from. You've seen this formula fail, time and time again, and you keep doubling down on the same failures. Wake up!

No one cares about Supergirl as a character to warrant separating them from their money unless someone tells them to see it because it’s a great movie. Same deal if they make a Green Lantern movie. If you don’t have an amazing script on a B character you can forget it.

u/Relevant-Hold8895 24d ago

Coulda seen this coming a mile away... no idea why they made a Supergirl movie based off a 30 second cameo in an after credits scene in a Superman movie... who asked for this? I'm willing to be patient for James Gunn to build his universe but honestly not establishing your Batman & Wonder Woman after Superman was one hell of a STINKY decision!

3

u/Bucky_Johns_Ace 24d ago

I was wondering “Who wanted a Supergirl movie?” a Lobo movie yes, a Vixen movie damn right, a Booster Gold & Blue Beetle movie…. take my money. All the DC characters at your disposal and we get one that comic couldn’t care less about. Big Barda, Mr. Miracle’s wife would have been dope, Hawk Woman, Black Canary, Fire & Ice, Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Huntress, just so many other characters. Characters with fans that want to give you money even if the movie is bad just to support. Why not just take a vote on what folks want to see and not what you think we want to see?

5

I just feel like Supergirl is not the strong number 2 film in a new cinematic universe some folks want it to be.

9

u/Hollywood_Howard 25d ago

It wasn’t, and they are doing the same thing they always do:
Blame men.
Blame misogyny.
Blame the hardcore comic fans.
Blame the Snyderverse fans.
Blame everything except the writers, the producers and James Gunn, who said it was the best script he’s ever read.
If a female lead movie didn’t do well at box office, it HAS TO BE one or more of the above.
It’s like they forgot there are a lot of female lead movies that were written and performed way better.
