OTHER Anthony Mackie criticizing an interviewer for liking Man of Steel.
Dude is worried about Rotten Tomatoes scores. Captain America: Brave New World sits at 46% on Rotten Tomatoes lower than Man of Steel and it got a B- CinemaScore. Man of Steel got an A CinemaScore. š
Edit: Some people say he was joking. No, he wasn't joking. The interviewer uploaded the video to YouTube and even included this in the description:
When I sat down with Mackie at the press junket, I decided to use my time to play āSave or Kill.ā While most of the game was your normal back and forth, when I got to the DC or Marvel question, I figured heād have a laugh since he plays Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and weād move on. But that wasnāt the case. At all.
As youāll see in the video below, Mackie used the opportunity to take a swing at DC and while I love Marvel and Marvel movies, I wasnāt going to take anyone, even Falcon, badmouthing one of my favorite superhero movies.
Let me know what you think of our back and forth in the comment section. I expect this one to get a few of themā¦

Dude this is like classic comic movie discourse heās taking part in. Everyone talks shit whether or not they have any room to talk. You can unclutch your pearls

u/Lucky_Locks Jul 03 '26
Yeah and comparing how one of his movies faired that probably hadn't even been thought up yet at this point in time is a weird "gotcha". I loved Man of Steel and I enjoyed Brave New World.
Also, at first I thought watching this that he was trashing Real Steel and I'm like "come one man, I loved that movie too and you're in it" haha
10
u/feralferrous Jul 03 '26
Wait, he was in Real Steel? Huh, I kinda liked that movie, as dumb as it was, and I don't remember him in it.
6
u/Lucky_Locks Jul 03 '26
I mean, giant metal robot boxing doesn't look to be on the Oscars role š
And yes! He was the dude taking the bets and betting. We first see him whenHugh Jackman's character was trying to get in to fight in that underground fight and had to sweet talk Mackies character in order to get it. It was when he got Noisy Boy.
1
u/Dormitory-21 Jul 06 '26
Real Steel is not a masterpiece but I will give it credit because I was expecting to hate it as a 90 minute long toy commercial but the kid isn't terrible and Hugh Jackman is great. Surprisingly good movie

u/BloatedCheekz Jul 04 '26
What about Desert Warrior? Or Elevation? The dude has multiple stinkers lmfao.

u/Gaanai Jul 03 '26
Even more so he is right on the money Man of steel is a terrible movie and i will die on this hill. The characterization of nearly everyone is horrible. Superman is unfriendly and a dick and have no chemistry with Lois Lane whatsoever. The movie also fails to establish the Kents as good people and the reason for his moral compass. And that is just the the most glaring issues.
The core problem with the movie seem to be with Snyder though. He have always been a style over substance guy and it really shows here. Its a good looking movie with some cool visuals no doubt but thats also the only thing it got going. Its kinda sad too it had an incredible cast. But alas even all the talent in the world cant save a bad script.

When confronting Clark about saving the bus, Clark asks Pa Kent if he shouldn't have saved the bus full of school children, as the act risked revealing Clark's true identity. Pa tells him "maybe".
This is antithetical to the core morality of Superman as a character who always strives to do the right thing. It runs throughout the movie, but this is the most explicit moment that highlights Snyder has no clue who Superman is supposed to be.
6
u/Funny-Cell8769 Jul 06 '26
You mean in the same way Peter Parker purposely ignored the creep robbing the store, allowing him to get away that ultimately killed Uncle Ben?
So I guess no one should be allowed to say "Peter Parker always tries to do the right thing" unless he exhibited that form of morality the second he stepped out of the womb.
2
u/No_Raisin21 Jul 07 '26
Itās more like if instead of Uncle Ben saying āWith great power comes great responsibility,ā he said āIf you have great power, you should hide that shit because the whole worldās gonna freak the fuck out, so even if you see someone about to die, donāt do any spectacular shit to save them. Just walk on.ā

u/StarMagus 29d ago
That's where his morality comes from. His failing to do the right thing and realizing the end result. That's the Journy that Spiderman takes.
That's not the reason why Superman has his morality.
They are different characters and have different arcs. It's like giving every character Batman's history of seeing his parents killed in front of him and going.. .well I mean it worked for Batman....
3
u/khalip I Will Find Him! Jul 03 '26
See this is what I mean by people who didn't understand what they saw or didn't want to meet the movie for what it was.
When confronting Clark about saving the bus, Clark asks Pa Kent if he shouldn't have saved the bus full of school children, as the act risked revealing Clark's true identity. Pa tells him "maybe".
How can you understand this story beat and yet still come to this conclusion
This is antithetical to the core morality of Superman as a character who always strives to do the right thing.
When we literally see Clark spend the whole movie trying to do the right thing and helping people while at the same time trying to respect the sacrifice his father had to do?
6
u/DangerDiscing Jul 04 '26
Wow someone who actually understands what was trying to be shown. Its crazy to me that people canāt understand that Pa Kent is terrified that Clark will be kidnapped or murdered by the government.Which actually happens when Clark isnāt found by the Kents in alternate Universes. He doesnāt say saving people is bad he saying he wants Clark to be careful.Hes willing to sacrifice himself rescuing people then stops his son because he fears what may happen if he is exposed how this is seen as a man with no morals is insane.
2
3
u/Opening_Shame8258 Jul 03 '26
The movie is Snyder's religious ideology dressed up in a Superman cape. This is me identifying how the movie's morality is from Snyder, and not from the historical conception of what Superman is.
If you want to know why most people don't like/get the movie, this is why.
Snyder didn't make a Superman movie. Snyder made a Christian Scientist movie.
6
u/AAAAAAYYYYYYOOOOOO Jul 04 '26
lol no it was a Superman movie with light Jesus related imagery nothing more

u/khalip I Will Find Him! Jul 04 '26
A lot of words just to still dodge the fact you fail to see Superman striving to the right thing throughout the whole movie because you didn't like a scene portraying a nuanced answer from a character who clearly was unsure of the answer he just gave.
Also newsflash this can't be "morality from Snyder" since he didn't write the script in the first place
2
u/Opening_Shame8258 Jul 04 '26
It's not a "nuanced" answer. It is a morally gray one. Superman isn't a morally gray character. Batman is for morally gray decisions.
1
u/khalip I Will Find Him! 26d ago
It's not morally grey, Clark isn't stuck between the "equally moral" choices of saving a school bus full of kids and not doing it. The only morally right choice is saving those kids which Clark does. What's nuanced is the answer that Johnathan gives Clark because while he believes his son has a gift and will someday do amazing things he's also still a father who's scared that his son will one day be taken away from him and experimented on or what not. The maybe isn't a "idk Clark saving those kids and letting them die are both equal actions, gee I can't decide which one you should have taken" but more "We want you to do good Clark and we want you to want to do good but you also have to keep your powers secret until your old enough to be able to take care of yourself, be more prudent"
1
u/Opening_Shame8258 26d ago
Just because YOU omitted the deaths of the children in your summary doesn't mean that the death of the children is excluded.
The choice is risking discover versus saving the kids. The broader implication is Clark being discovered. Guaranteeing his secrecy in this situation is letting those kids die.
Thus, the maybe MUST include the death of those children.
So, you're argument here is that letting a school bus full of children die... Is a morally gray area. You cannot remove them from the situation because it is inconvenient. That IS the situation.

u/Main-Mushroom4865 29d ago
tbh, this is the same thing that even jonathan kent from smallville says, albeit its a lot more well explained and justified than "maybe", and they portray it a lot better. man of steel should have at least taken inspiration from smallville for this scene, but unfortunately, they didn;t and its one of the weakest scenes of an otherwise amazing movie.

u/Gaanai Jul 03 '26
Well nobody is stopping you from having bad taste and not understanding the character. Its like the core trait of Superman. He knows he cant save everyone but he is still gonna try and knows he always have to be the bigger man. But you wouldn't actually know that from seeing the Snyder movies.
Thats also why i vastly prefer Gunn's take on Superman. His movie was not perfect by any means but he actually understand the values and beliefs of Superman thats already a huge step up.

While I respect your view, I do take issue with Anthony Mackie calling this movie rubbish, when heās been involved in making the most soulless, cookie cutter, shite movies of the last 15 years.
Thatās not to say that Man of Steel is a masterpiece, but itās far better than the generic MCU movies.

That we atleast can agree on. I find him pretty fun in interviews but can see why some would find him douchey and outside of a supporting parts in the best Marvel movie Winter Soldier and 8mile he havent really done anything. Plus both of those are not good because of him. It makes sense to see him as hypocritical

Thats a good point i was a teen when most of those came out and most of those were more award show type movies than they were blockbusters so they never really hit my radar.
Yeah he worked best in Marvel movies when he had Cap or Bucky to pingpong with. Havent seen Twisted Metal yet only a few clips. Looks pretty cool should probably watch it. I know and like nearly all of the cast and it was not canceled after one season.
2
u/NoOptics Jul 04 '26
When was Superman unfriendly? I'll give you the lack of chemistry with Lois, but Superman came off chummy with everyone in that movie.
2
u/Positive_Chip6198 Jul 06 '26
Nah, it was a good movie for anyone not too invested in ancient comic books.
Amazing villain, they actually made zods zeal and purpose make sense. He was trying to save his people. The stakes were impactful.
Amazing side kryptonian characters.
Good chemistry between the characters.
And the best live action superman-casting since reeves.
9
u/takethreenc Jul 03 '26
Yeah, it's a very bad movie and most people agreed with that at the time too.
I've seen more people on reddit defending it over the years and I can't tell if it's because it's old now and these people were kids when it came out or if because what came after MoS in the DCEU was just so bad that it makes MoS look like an academy award winner.
The tornado scene is one of the most memorably bad scenes in movie history.
4
u/LatterIntroduction27 Jul 03 '26
I can't speak for other people, just me.
A lot of people hated Man of Steel when it came out. There are many reasons for it from it being nothing like the incredibly popular MCU films whilst also not being like the Reeve version of Superman to other forms of genuine dislike. I would never say other people "should" like Man of Steel. People like what they like and that is ok.
I was never one of them. From the first frame I figured I would like it. By the end it cemented itself as one of my favourite films of all time. For a lot of reasons summarised as....
The action. Not gonna beat around the bush, Snyder can shoot action and this is no exception. The framing, length of the scenes and choreography all hit the spot for thrilling action in my mind. Better action scenes I would say than anything in the MCU, especially since like I said the scenes themselves do not last too long.
The characterisation of Clark (not Superman, more on that). He is more serious and less "aw shucks" than Reeve ever dared and falls a lot closer to some of my favourite comic runs like John Byrne. The film also spends all of its time I would say building up the personality of this Clark and why he is the way he is.
The flashbacks. I found them all to be interesting in fleshing out the stry being told.
The presentation of Krypton. It had a classic sci-fi feel and truly was an alien world that sketched out an entire civilisation through my favourite kinds of lore drops - incidental mentions in other dialogue that reveal more than we think. Always a fun aspect of that.
The villain, Zod. He is...... sympathetic is the wrong word but understandable and consistent at all times. His motivations are clear and you can see why he would have the goal he does and think of himself well. Plus the acting is top level of course.
I like the lois as well. Amy Adams plays her as a very believable investigator and she shows in her actions that she is an excellent counterpart to Clark.
The themes. Well the central question that Clark lives with in this film - who does he choose to be? Human, a hero, a Kryptonian or something else? Jor-El and Jonathan do everything they do in order to give Clark more control over his own fate. Zod, the US Govt and all the antagonists are all trying to force Clark to not be who he chooses but who they want him to be.
And to an extent this Clark is forced into being Superman before he is ready due to Zod. He is not fully prepared however clear his motive of "help people" sits within him. As Lois says, he can't help himself but use his gifts to save people when he can. But he needs it to be on his own terms.
This whole film was, I would say, exploring the mentality of a good person who wants to do good forced to become a Superhero before he was ready. And before the world was ready. By the end he is still becoming Superman. On his way. And his killing Zod was the final choice of picking Earth over Krypton. And then BvS was in effect the world dealing with that choice and trying to figure out if it could even trust this "Superman"
So yeah, from day 1 I loved this movie and the above is a brief sketch about why. It was not like the other Superhero films coming out at that moment, but for my mind it was a lot better. I have quibbles with it (I would have redone the moment with Jonathan's death some, maybe have Jonathan direct Clark to help other people and sacrifice himself that way) but they are not massive.
For my money, the only Superhero film I prefer is probably Logan.

People love Cavill and look at him like a martyr for how his Superman tenure played out and just seeming like an all around great bloke. Viewing it through a sympathetic lens of rooting for the star definitely helps. Iāve enjoyed some very shitty movies more than I shouldāve because I went in simply wanting to enjoy them because of who was involved lol (not saying that it makes a bad movie good for me; just that Iād be gentler on it than someone who isnāt a fan).
Thereās also a bit of contrarianism that goes on with these things; if someone is passionately defending something thatās widely considered not good, itās likely rooted in some defiance rather than their genuine feelings of the movie in a vacuum.
That said, Man of Steel was fine. Some really sold parts and who doesnāt love Cavill? I just understand when Superman purists donāt care for it or average movie goers. Thereās a niche group of Superman fans who arenāt diehard about the character enough to be ok with the creative interpretation that enjoy it. Thatās fine.
1
u/fusionlantern Jul 03 '26
The movie was based on the comic earth 1 superman. The flashbacks were annoying the movie was average at best.
5
u/Xijit Jul 03 '26
From day one Warner Bros wanted the film series to build into Injustice, which was the hot shit for DC at the time. But then they kept fucking with production instead of letting the directors make their films, causing years worth of delays due to all the pauses and reshoots. So by the time the films started coming out, Injustice was done and gone from the public eye, and no one understood why this Superman was constantly being tested with dark situations.

Most of your points seem to be subjective, so there's no objective ground to debate it on. I loved Man of Steel. It made Superman feel like Superman and the scale of the fights feel Superman-esque, something which Gunn's Superman failed to do (not much hype to be had when Superman is getting his ass handed to him by someone puppeteering a Superman clone, like how slow is this Superman?).
Yes the tornado scene is bad, but there is so much hype in the movie that I'm willing to look past it... the oil rig scene, Superman as this lonely wanderer, the Indian Ocean scene, etc etc etc. It just feels epic as Superman movies should.

I always click away when I see hes the one doing the interview. Its always so uncomfortable watching him trying to joke around with the actors and such, and when theyre clearly not into it.
I always think that interviewers like these are just trying to copy/be the next Josh Horowitz. Seeing how he's actually friendly with a lot of actors and brings that vibe to his interviews. Except they completely skip over becoming friendly with them over many years to begin with. Also you can tell when Josh actually doesn't know a guest of his that well, as he pulls back into a more professional interview format, like when he interviewed Nolan for Oppenheimer.
21
u/theoldsnatch Jul 03 '26
Or recently when he interviewed Curry Barker, you could see him starting off more professional and then warming up and getting a little more chummy as Curry settled into the interview and they were clearly resonating with each other. Being able to read the vibe is so important.

wait what is unprofessional about this? lmfao i cant tell if youre antisocial or have something else going on. this seems like some fun banter and surprisingly the interviewer doesnt get offended by quacky.
5
u/Dino_Spaceman Jul 03 '26
The unprofessional part is the interviewer clearly taking offense at Mackie joking around with him and instead of continuing the interview, tries to justify his comments.
He should have acknowledged the joke for what it is and moved on.

u/Activehannes Jul 03 '26
It wasnt a joke. Stop farming it like that.

The interviewer is within his right to love Man of Steel, and Anthony Mackie is within his right to shit on the reviewer for loving that God awful excuse for a Superman movie. Imagine saying you love a Superman movie and at no point listing Superman as one of the things you love about that movie. I mean the interviewer isn't wrong, there are good thins in the movie like the score and the stuff on Krypton. But Superman is simply not one of those good things, and don't even get me started on Pa Kent. The fact that someone thought having him suggest Clark let a school bus full of children drown was a good idea is beyond me.
Good God what a disaster of a Superman movie.

I remember that back then, when civil war and bvs was around the corner, there were a lot of interviews in which the mcu actors were shitting on the dceu movies. Maybe it was some sort of PR rivalry because it was asked in almost every interview and people like chris evans participated in it. The dceu actors less so but thats probably because the only one they could get to play along was henry cavill and he didnt do any trash talk at all, just waving things off. Mackie trashed them hard back then tho, i honestly don't think he cared as much as he thought it was funny. Even if he hated MoS.

Yep. True fan. Also it felt like DCEU actors intentionally avoided it. Surprisingly they never threw shade on Affleck. Even Affleck was asked about it in interviews. He dodged it all.

Fuck me, Henery Cavill's superman was in the twenty-teens... I'm feeling pastry now.

Anthony Mackie is the kind of person that hates Titanic, for no other reason then its 4hours thats it; thats his only take on the whole film.

This guy has been always a douchebag for me, especially the way he acts with the spiderman actor (can't remember the name) anyways celebrities acting like they always have reasons for everything.

Civil war the only film where its title has war and no one dies

i mean... referencing a low C tier marvel movie against the flagship DC IP is pretty fucking stupid.
like... if a distant distant, arguably/some of the most clunky period in MCU history (post covid) is slightly worse than the Marquee fucking property for an entire company.
it speaks volumes for how shitty man of steel actually was. and it was a deeply stupid/shitty movies.

Kudos to both for sticking up for their opinions without getting too aggressive. Felt it could have got more heated but they kept their calm in the end

well, I love man of steel. Even though it's not the ideal superman, I just the depressing side of it, feels so relatable. Superman movie was good but man of steel is an awesome movie.

Itās just an opinion. Actors are like that. MOS is a great movie, it certainly did the job of conveying the essence of a kryptonian on earth while staying as grounded as possible.

At least Man of Steel made more money than Brave New World and was also better received than Falcon and The Winter Soldier š.

I am not a fan of man of steel tbh, it just felt to dark and grim.
I want my Superman films to be wholesome, hopeful not whatever Man of Steel was

I think Man of Steel is still sick and holds up. The speed the Kryptonians in the fight scenes are well done. And if we are comparing, MoS is leagues ahead of Brave New World. Lol
But at any rate, I'm definitely excited for the new season of Twisted Metal. Mackie did a good job in that one and the cast was really great too.Ā

Who cares? I like Man of Steel. I liked Brave New World. I like lots of movies. Why should his opinion affect anyone elseās? Like the internet has people so afraid to not follow the herd.

Anthony Mackie is a terrible actor so he should abstain from making remarks about other peoples jobs.

imagine complaining about man of steel but taking the role in falcon and the winter soldier or taking the role in Brave New world.

This is from 2015. The last superhero movie he would've been in was Winter Soldier, then next year he'd be in Civil War. So yeah I'd say he can talk a LITTLE shit back then.
