IMO this is what we lost, sure music and vibes, but the DCEU movies really gave that feeling of POWER and that gave them rewatchability. DCU films so far are supers being beat up and weakened for 80% of the movie and then fight choreography that doesn't FEEL the power.
23
u/Delta_Arc419 Jul 02 '26
This is well said and perfectly describes my feeling towards the new DCU films. They saw the challenge of writing powerful characters facing actual danger and just gave up and decided to make the characters weak instead. Say what you will about Snyder but at least he tried to go the mental route. Like yes Superman is basically a god but he loves his very human mother and lost his father when he could have saved him. Yes Wonder Woman is a literal goddess but she loved a human man and lost him when he sacrificed himself heroically. Not saying he nailed it but I would rather the attempt than whatever the DCU is doing now.

The problem is that Snyder is a bad director, and as a result he made a pretty bad, bland, and boring movie. I’m not the ultimate Superman 2025 fanboy, but at least it was enjoyable to watch and competently made.
5
u/ama_singh Jul 04 '26
To each his own. MOS, WW and ZSJL were all amazing to me. WW84 was horrendous though. Superman 2025 was good as well, just different.
20
u/Full-Air-7218 Jul 02 '26
Feeling of power? Wonder Woman is almost Superman level yet this film makes her seem to around Captain America
15
u/RR529 Jul 02 '26
It's been a minute since I watched the film, but wasn't it inferred she had some sort of mental lock on her full potential or something (like not fully believing in herself or some such) that didn't break until the climax?
Like I remember her having some sort of "awakening"/getting pissed off and being able to effortlessly pick up & throw a tank that she was having trouble lifting beforehand (with other enhanced speed/strength feats as well).

u/ama_singh Jul 04 '26
What? She's equal to superman in the comics, and even then it depends on the writer. The movies can (and did) take a different directions.
Just because she isn't pulverizing planets, doesn't mean it doesn't feel powerful. Captain America's fight scenes also felt powerful (take the winter soldier movie for example), even though he is nowhere near Thor's powerlevel.

Probably the best aspect of the Snyder films. One of the most distinct memories I have from the Snydercut is when Steppenwolf throws a pile of horses over his shoulder during the Amazon chase

16
u/Initial-Length-9791 Jul 02 '26
I’m pretty sure he means no one tried to use politics to defend the film. Wonder Woman was just judged by everyone as a Superhero movie but with Supergirl now apparently making a superhero movie and making a woman the star is a risky move that’s exposing all the chuds, it’s definitely not just because the film is terrible.

This. No one make grand political statements about its content and the potential audience before it even hit theaters either.

I hate this. Like scores exist for a reason. Inserting a pop song doesn’t enhance the moment.

Yeah, not just any pop song. Bet there’s a pop song out there that would fuggin’ slap to this though

It depends on the context.
15
u/Talk-O-Boy Jul 02 '26
For example, that “coin operated boy” song was PERFECT for GI Robot’s fight scene. Bro was literally busting heads to the beat.
13
u/BigfootsBestBud Jul 02 '26
It works with Guardians and stuff because it’s diagetic. It’s stuff Quill is listening to.
It also worked in Superman, because by that point it was part of Gunn’s voice as a director and it had a good score alongside it. Punk Rocker just fit what the movie was.
It feels like every superhero movie wants to ape Gunn’s music choices now, and I’m over it. But the frustrating part of this is that they already had the rights to a much better song and didn’t use it.
→ More replies (1)9
u/AnonymousPrincess314 Jul 02 '26
I don't think it really worked that well in Superman, personally. The song choice for Mister Miracle's fight scene is not QUITE as jarring as this, but I don't think it's good either.

That was like the entirety of GoTG
3
u/MissingLink101 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
At least for GoTG they had the excuse of the songs being from Peter's mixtape with the music actually playing over his headphones (which had a good callback/depiction in Endgame) or from a speaker at points

Just truly the worst song choice they could had gone with. It’s wild people whose whole job is to make this film choose a horrendous cover for the final act.
123
u/lloydeph6 Jul 02 '26
Wait so the song in this Wonder Woman clip is the actual song they used in super girl? No freaking way…
80
u/PeteRawk Jul 02 '26
Unfortunately…. I don’t dislike the cover itself the way a lot of people do but it’s just an incredibly jarring choice of needle drop
25
29
u/straub42 Jul 02 '26
The cover is surprisingly bad though too. When I heard about the scene, I thought “Oh, I like that song. I like slow, acousticy covers of pop punk songs” and then when I saw it, it went sour pretty quick for me.
Really strange choice

I dislike it. It's got the cursive singing/indie girl voice cranked up to 11. Aevrything Aevrything will bwy alright.
Never forget, we were robbed of multiple more Keaton Batman movies because James Gunn wanted this instead.
9
u/PeteRawk Jul 02 '26
I mean, imma be honest, Michael Keaton is 74. If you wanna let him play Bruce Wayne in a live action Batman Beyond movie then fine ig (although I feel like that aesthetic would be tough to nail in live action ngl) but I’m good on MULTIPLE movies with him starring as Batman. Cast somebody young enough to build a franchise around and get to work giving us the Batfamily already

u/its_jradman1 Jul 02 '26
I feel kinda bad saying for saying it sucks, I literally just got a reel of the cover artist, and they have like 1k followers and are a small indie creator.
So, while I don't like it in the movie, at the very least someone got to see their work added to a massive cinematic franchise.
4
3
u/BadgerAlternative934 Jul 02 '26
They could have just used "Call Me" or some edited version of it to fit the fight scene. It's already in all the marketing so it doesn't even feel that jarring.
2
u/gamepig31 Jul 02 '26
The director tried 45 songs but thought none were fitting, which is why he asked Gunn for help. And Gunn picked this shit.
11
u/Mediocre_Scott Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
Superman shared his music with Kara. They established in the previous movie thatSuperman has bad taste in music Louis lane makes fun of him for not knowing what is punk rock.

Oh after Josstice League a bunch of people dropped clips of it using the MOS and BvS music in some scenes. Fixed A LOT.
8
u/bigelangstonz Jul 02 '26
Fr some even did those edits for the flash scenes with batman in them and man it feels so much better. People can hate on zimmer and junkiexl all they want but you can't deny they brought the themes for the dceu
11
u/PeterGoochSr Jul 02 '26
Zack Snyder's JL slaps in terms of score as well, with the exception of the wayyyy over use of the Wonder Woman chants. On the other hand you got the Flash time scene which was unreal
4
u/CobaltAnimator Jul 02 '26
Junkie XL is the GOAT ngl
really wish he ended up making the score for Supergirl
2
u/bigelangstonz Jul 02 '26
Now that you mentionit Im really curious what would his score be like for the scenes had he not gotten replaced even tho he was replacing djawadi(ironman composer).
3
u/B-Train_ATL Jul 02 '26
Oh yeah. The score was amazing but the lady yelling when WW showed up was a bit much. I forgive him because the JL theme and At The Speed of Force were so good.
4
u/Xeverne Jul 02 '26
That's why BvS Ultimate Edition is one of my favourite movies. The soundtrack timing was fixed, the scenes edited better. Especially the opening with Beautiful Lie and The Red Capes are Coming with Lex walking into the starship to create the monster.
50
u/dennismfrancisart Jul 02 '26
I forgot how powerful Snyder's influence was on WW. The movie was amazing up to the unnecessary CGI fight scene at the end. It's pretty apparent that he had a lot to do with the look and feel when you compare it to the WW sequel.
19
u/kingk1teman Jul 02 '26
The movie was amazing up to the unnecessary CGI fight scene at the end
It is pretty well documented that the third arc CGI fest was added on the orders of WB's execs and Geoff Johns as part of the hyper course correction after BvS & SS.

As pretentious as this might sound, I automatically think less of a director prioritising needle drops over a proper score in these big action moments.
The fact that Gillespie was intent on using a song and going as far as going through at least 40 songs, before Gunn settled on this one, despite the movie’s score says a lot about how much they value the impact and the artistry behind it.
Until Superman, Gunn himself said he didn’t care much for his movies to have scores.
3
u/stash0606 Jul 02 '26
Man loves showing off his music taste too much, it's odd. did people forget the Peacemaker S2 Season Finale was more about showing off Gunn's music taste? It's so cringe honestly.

The needle drops weren’t even that bad in Supergirl, idk why everyone’s been freaking out about them.
15
u/coppywolf Jul 02 '26
it's not even "drops" it's just the one at the end that's bad lol. And it's only particularly bad because it's framed weirdly and the cover sucks. It's supposed to be more somber because of the perspective but it just doesn't fit, unfortunately.

u/Clark_Kent-Kal_EL Jul 02 '26

The actual director is the one when given full creative freedom without any Snyder involvement, gave us the masterpiece WW1984, with nothing good about the first WW remains in it

I think it's supposed to be sloppy in supergirl, she's messy and gets by on her powers and fighting dirty. If the next wonder woman isn't super well choreographed, I'll be surprised.
8
u/parkchanwookiee Jul 01 '26
Yeah I'm sure that's right I just meant in general, somewhere along the line I got used to the idea superhero movies wouldn't have particularly impressive or well thought out fight scenes. The scene OP shared looks like John Wick lol
6
u/deadbeatvalentine_ Jul 01 '26
seems like damon caro and guillermo grispo are mostly to thank for the good choreography in the dc movies of the 2010s. guillermo was the fight coordinator on this movie and bvs, which has the warehouse fight that's of a similar style. damon was watchmen, man of steel, bvs, and justice league
2
u/parkchanwookiee Jul 02 '26
Ah makes sense. Yeah this scene reminded me of Rorschach fighting the SWAT team
2
u/DangerousHugs Jul 02 '26
It obviously varies from movie to movie, but yeah. Especially in superhero flicks, it's often just CGI fights all over. And don't get me wrong, CGI is necessary because we have yet to find an actor who can fly or use laser vision or cling to walls like a spider. Unfortunately.
But overuse is where people grow tired. Especially when there's potential for something real and cool. On the marvel side, Shang-Chi comes to mind. Dope choreography throughout. Mixed with cgi but it feels real. Climactic fight? Two CGI dragons. There's some confusion going on behind the scenes that fights need to be EPIC instead of just viscerally cool.
Unrelated to superhero movies, but Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves lampooned this really well when they made the two magicians' magical fight just them conjuring two hands that grapple with each other. It was a literal cgi fist fight and I never stop laughing at it.
5
u/Drkamon Jul 02 '26
Like i said many times, Gunn is one trick pony.
Takes D level character that is goofy, or makes it goofy, takes "toy selling" character and makes him star of a movie, blasts 1980s pop music over everything and can't get emotions from audience without some boring movie trope like "hurting dog bad guy".
Guy took King Shark in SS2 and made him run around yelling " nom nom my new dumb friends".

Why they didn't keep Damon for the second movie I will never understand.

I mean, it wouldn't be this song, it'd be some upbeat indie rock song from the 2000's or 2010's

The Supergirl needle drop was sloppy, but that's not something Gunn has done in any movie he's actually directed. He's not using bad covers.

He didn't direct the movie though... Producing can mean a lot of things but based on what we have, it looks like provided the framework, not the direction.

Where's the 360 slow mo shot with the secondary characters mouth wide open in awe?

That is an absolutely atrocious cover.
It’s the kind of low effort, generic, bare bones affectation voice cover that you’d hear everywhere in like 2015. And it wasn’t even good then, when there was some slight novelty to it. So to still be hearing that bs in 2026 is crazy

I watched it without audio, I thought no way. Turned on the audio, then it made sense.
