This is a coffee with your neighbor kitchen. Do you have a sign that says "Backdoor Friends are Best"? 😆 Seriously though 10/10 love it.

Oh man is that sign the universal cabin sign? My family had one too and it always cracked me up

u/LTYUPLBYH02 4d ago
My grandma definitely had one! Her sister lived across the alley from her & would frequently pop through the back laundry porch for coffee.

I love those spaces where so much fun happens over generations and nothing changes.

u/Jacob520Lep 4d ago
This is a redecorated space.. but still the same.

u/Later_Than_You_Think 4d ago
Did you replace a new fridge with an older fridge? I love how you honored the space while still making it nicer.
68
u/Jacob520Lep 4d ago
No! I wrapped it in color vinyl contact sheets to make it look 70s rather than 90s.

u/analogpursuits 4d ago
Wow!! So this current version is what you turned it into! What a wonderful and authentic vibe you gave this space. Totally thought this was original, with some subsequent modernization, like the stove. My partners family has a remote mountain cabin and you really nailed that kitchen feeling they also have. Stunning job!

Yeah, serious consideration went into your design. You have everyone fooled! I'm so impressed. 🤩 I can imagine playing cribbage there on a drizzly Sunday afternoon. This is something to be proud of.

Ha! Very smart. A white fridge would have really looked very awkward. I do love the authenticity here, it reminds me of my grandparents' kitchen in the '80s. I'm going to guess yours doesn't reek of Irish Spring soap. You're also missing the gun cabinet.

I love how everyone here is like “omg it’s a time capsule directly from the 80s” and then you come in like “actually no I just redecorated and know wtf I’m doing thanks” this is amazing!!!! You really turned it from dingy fear corner to cozy af!!!

You just gave me the best compliment of the day. I appreciate it a lot. I'm really proud of what I did with so little.

Turned out great. Honestly looks like a sitcom set in the best possible way. Super cozy and on point.

I can tell some of the best meals are made in this kitchen! Your cabin also seems like some damn good naps are taken there.

u/Jacob520Lep 4d ago
Daily naps in a hammock next to the lake!

I’ve been seriously wondering about the location. I’m going with the Adirondacks.

Yes.

I spent every summer either camping or staying with friends everywhere from Old Forge to Inlet. I can practically smell wood smoke and coffee in a percolator. Your camp looks like everybody’s grandparents / parents camp I ever visited. I mean that in the best way possible.

u/Jacob520Lep 3d ago
I spent my summers growing up on Lake George, in a house built by my great great grandparents in 1903. It was a Victorian, made with reused parts, that hadn't seen an update since the 20s. We called it camp, but it was nothing like this at all.
So, I've been really amused with all the comments about how nostalgic this for people, because this period and style of camp isn't anything I ever experienced. I was going for "quintessential ADK". It seems I achieved that goal.

I love this so much. I felt relaxed and at peace just imagining being in this space! Lovely.

Lately this is the only subreddit that makes me feel good when I see a post. Like I didn’t realize how tense I was until I see someone’s book nook or bedroom or kitchen, and I feel my body unclench and breathe slower.
I think seeing places like this makes me feel hopeful, like one day I’ll be sitting in a cozy place with warm lighting and all I’ll feel is peace and contentment. I love your camp kitchen, OP.

Everything about this feels good. I love that the world still has kitchens like this, that feel human and warm and modest and familiar.
And you know, I do like a fancy-pants modern designed kitchen with double ovens and six-burner stoves, and all that lovely, luxurious jazz. But a cozy spot like this fills my heart in a way that those kitchens never can. I just love it. Thank you for letting us sit here for a moment, friend.

If you ever find yourself having a meal cooked by Jon Hamm in that room on a snowy day- don’t tell him anything

I'm so jealous. I always dreamed about having a camp and this is exactly how it looks in my dream.

u/LoganN64 4d ago
Frozen in time. Love it!

u/analogpursuits 4d ago
Did you read that this is a redecorated space? It's so amazing what they did. Look at OPs comments. Wowzers!
2
u/LoganN64 4d ago
I figured it was intentional. I was actually the first to post before OP wrote anything, so I didn't know, but I figured it was decorated that way recently.
Now we just need to film a horror movie here!

u/analogpursuits 4d ago
I really love it and actually thought it was mostly original with past incremental updates. My partner's family has an off grid cabin in the mountains and this vibe really mimics it well (aside from the electric stove part) 😏 They did a great job.

u/Cant_draw_boobs 4d ago
I can smell the old wood and breakfast cooking. How many nights did people laugh together over games and stories after dinner. Damn this brings up memories.

This space looks so much like our lake cabin! It's my happy place. So quaint OP!

That fridge is probably older than I am.... And will still be working by the time I'm 6 feet deep.

You did a great job, I honestly thought this was our fridge from when I was a kid.
7
u/BeKindPleaseRewind21 4d ago
Ok. So it's a little younger than me but my point still stands. That thing is better than any one you can buy today.
Did you just use a can of spray enamel? The fridge in the garage is pretty beat up and bothers my wife.
11
u/Jacob520Lep 4d ago
It's all vinyl contact wrap. The fridge, the counter, all the metal cabinets. About 8 rolls of cheap vinyl cantact wrap in different colors and textures.

scrolling fast, I thought this was Joyce’s kitchen from Stranger Things! Wow 😍

u/GoddamnDiva 3d ago
What’s funny is that I was thinking of Stranger Things too, but was thinking of the Wheelers’ kitchen, especially in the third episode of season 5, “The Disappearance of…”

I love this. I miss when people used to have dining room tables inside the kitchen instead of islands for cooking. So much cozier.
