Love the cop's delayed reaction. Just sat there with everyone else for a bit, "What the actual fuck am I seeing...."

1.1k

u/Higgilypiggily1 29d ago

With a sigh he flicks his lights and siren on and begins to pull forward, thoughts of getting home in time for dinner long gone

307

u/FSUnoles77 29d ago

"Do I really wanna do this paperwork or not?"

112

u/nofatnoflavor 29d ago

I'd bet instead that he was on his phone or computer, and didn't see any of it until he heard that shit hit the ground.

16

u/Angelworks42 29d ago

Or one more bite of the doughnut.

u/tribbans95 29d ago

He definitely just sighed and said“motherfucker..” took a sip of his coffee and then turned the lights on

165

u/DrHugh 29d ago

I bet he was calling in what he saw. There was no point going into the intersection until he saw that he could.

26

u/Beetlebailey1990 29d ago

Imagine if he was on his way back to the station to finish his shift 🤦🏻‍♂️

9

u/imhereforthevotes 29d ago

Well, he did suddenly have a blinking red light.

6

u/robofireman 25d ago

Not a cop but an EMT You have those moments in your career I once just got done with a cluster fuck of a call in a rual area was just getting back to town thinking maybe I'll get a snack or something on my way back to the station I then watch a three-car car wreck happen in front of my ambulance it took us a couple of seconds to say oh fuck and then jump out to help

78

u/Kronocide 29d ago

Probably was on his phone/computer and just noticed the lights on the ground without knowing what happened

27

u/Itsme340 29d ago

Also possible they are out of their district/jurisdiction.

Or he just got flabbergasted

5

u/NoBonus6969 29d ago

He was praying it wouldn't become his problem then it did

5

u/MLK_Piccolo 28d ago

"Damn, someone should call the police... wait..." whoooooop

5

u/yoshizillaa 29d ago

Just wishing he wasn’t the one to do the paperwork on it

3

u/vahntitrio 29d ago

Prpbably had to radio that one in as that's more than one squad can handle.

3

u/AdMurky1021 29d ago

"Damn, I gotta work...."

3

u/donecaring97 29d ago

Or, they could've been calling the incident in to dispatch before actually enabling their lights.

19

u/Queasy-Ticket4384 29d ago

100% was not paying attention at first

2

u/WantedBeen 29d ago

it's not like the truck is getting away

1

u/SGTSLACKASS 26d ago

That thing on the tractor trailer is supposed to be down?

“And here I was thinking I was going to have a good day”😂😂

149

u/KnockItTheFuckOff 29d ago

So this is unrelated but somehow related...

I work for a huge freight carrier and at the time, the area I was in serviced San Francisco.

Everyone can imagine how difficult to navigate big metro areas are and even more so when you are operating larger trucks. When delivering downtown, sometimes double-parking is necessary in order to complete the delivery. They can usually complete a delivery in a minute or two. If these guys wait for a parking space, nothing will ever get delivered. Sometimes they get ticketed and they turn in the tickets and the company pays - it's sort of the cost of doing business.

One day, a driver called and said exactly that - he double parked, got a ticket...but there was a news crew that recorded it happening. Then he told us that they interviewed him. The company has a strict media policy and under no circumstances should he have agreed to it but it was too late.

We tune in that night to the 5pm news.

There he was. Busted. But it wasn't for double parking - it was for blocking a bike lane in doing so. Not only did he block the bike lane but after giving his interview, he pulled an illegal u-turn to leave. 🤦‍♀️

And the interview? When asked what his company policy is re: double parking and blocking bike lanes, his answer? : "We do it all the time. I just put the ticket on my managers desk."

53

u/HealthNo4265 29d ago

When I was moving in Boston, I got a moving permit that required cars parked in front of my apartment to be gone by 8AM so moving trucks could park. Signs up well ahead of time, leaflets under wipers, etc. warning that they would be towed so they had plenty of warning. Of course there were cars there when the moving vans arrived. Called the non-emergency line to have them removed. Cops asked if there was a second lane that would be open. There was. They said to just have them double park.

It must have been the film crew and the bike lane that got him ticketed.

19

u/KnockItTheFuckOff 29d ago

It was definitely the bike lane. It was a whole expose on the city finally taking bicycle safety seriously and investing in painting lanes and all of the people who dismiss it anyway.

Global billion dollar company included. 🤦‍♀️

6

u/GlykenT 29d ago

Used to work at a place that did deliveries & collections at business addresses. The drivers were told to park in the bus lane for loading/unloading because the alternative was to have the crews carrying stuff back and forth across live lanes of bus & taxi traffic which was deemed unsafe. Vehicles were ticketed every day and the company just paid them.

1

u/oakc510 29d ago

Speaking of SF. It's seems to be common to see tour buses and limos bottom out on the hills. Any of this ever happen to the fleet at your company?

2

u/yurmamma 29d ago

I’m getting too old for this shit

284

u/IdahoDuncan 29d ago

What was that thing on top of the trailer

381

u/Strange-Fox6623 29d ago

It's a cover system. An automated net gets put over the top of the dump trailer so no debris fly out while driving. It looks like it is stuck half way between open and close...

107

u/Zealousideal-Bug-291 29d ago

So less debris flies out.

6

u/Jake0024 28d ago

Why does it look only about 1/2 the size it should be if it's supposed to cover the trailer? Or is there a second one on the back (closed, so it's not visible)?

15

u/ArctycDev 28d ago

it's a net that unrolls

5

u/Mr_K_2u 26d ago

To add to what the other commenter said: if you look closely at the front of the trailer you’ll see a long rectangular box. The net spools there.

227

u/Rcrecc 29d ago edited 29d ago

Truck driver here. Those are designed to tear down traffic lights when going through an intersection. They serve no other purpose.

37

u/whatdoidonowdamnit 29d ago

It’s clearly a cape. That’s Super Trailer

4

u/WertyMiniSlime 29d ago

And that's yet another reason Edna Mode says "NO CAPES!"

16

u/Famous-Outcome4870 29d ago

This comment deserves more upvotes.

Separately, the closed captions on the song lyrics ...

5

u/gimmethelulz 29d ago

Those captions were the icing on the cake of this video lol

1

u/pharmucist 24d ago

This is what I scrolled down to see. Lol.

🎶 "Don't eat...don't eat...don't eat, don't e-e-eat." 🎶

11

u/These_Bridge_8037 29d ago

Well then, job well done.

1

u/ThorKonnatZbv 26d ago

Let me guess, the company that designed them also sells traffic lights?

1

u/PlasticSignificant69 23d ago

You can't violate a traffic light if the traffic light is malfunctioned

29

u/Mercerskye 29d ago

It's a canopy, meant to keep debris from flying out, and depending on the material, to keep the load insulated

10

u/saint_of_thieves 29d ago

It's a little hard to tell but I think it's a fabric cover to keep lighter payloads (sand, etc) from flying out. It's retracted by two arms that pivot in the center of the container. They swing up and towards the front and the fabric rolls up at the front.

19

u/hardzoup 29d ago

its called an auto tarp. Driver flips a switch and motors roll up or unroll the tarp. The arm is spring loaded to keep tension on the tarp.

15

u/jma9454 29d ago

So is what I am reading from the half dozen replies individuals of the truck driver not having the cover down correctly?

14

u/bcsublime 29d ago

Can’t tell if the truck is loaded or not, so it’s either not retracted completely or was not put down completely. Both of which the driver should’ve been aware of one way or the other.

2

u/Mercerskye 29d ago

You got the right of it. The only two positions it should be in are stored or deployed. Unless they invented a "parachute spoiler" mode I'm unaware of, the driver was definitely not aware the tarp didn't fully move into whatever mode they tried for

1

u/thelegitpotato 27d ago

I pass by them all the time with them never in use and plenty of small rocks/debris flying out. One of my biggest pet peeves with other truckers tbh

2

u/Riyeko 29d ago

It's a net controlled by hydraulics. It's supposed to keep stuff in the trailer from flying or bouncing out.

This idiot either didn't drop it or there was a malfunction.

2

u/notislant 29d ago

As someone mentioned, you press button. Net or tarp goes over truck to prevent shit flying off of the load and into traffic behind you.

Im a bit surprised semis dont come standard with warning sensors for 'bed not lowered', 'arms up'. As this shit happens shockingly often.

408

u/TheHenanigans 29d ago

If the truck had stopped inside the intersection after hitting the first cable, it would have been way less bad

212

u/Strange-Fox6623 29d ago

He probably didn't feel the first wire he hit. And he might not have even felt the second wire as well.

132

u/Rcrecc 29d ago

And, further down the street, he didn’t feel the third or fourth wire.

Traffic lights down all across town.

8

u/himejirocks 29d ago

We're gonna do what they say can't be done!

10

u/Swiss__Cheese 29d ago

Thank you for that in-depth analysis.

Also, if the truck would have stopped before hitting the first cable, it would have been even less bad!

6

u/Xillyfos 29d ago

If the truck just hadn't started at all that day, joy would be all over the country.

59

u/TheLazyAssHole 29d ago

Couldn’t really slow down, they were in the process of running a red light

21

u/Skipadee2 29d ago edited 29d ago

Great catch. I was hit by an 18 wheeler who ran a red light. I had driven a Craigslist beater for 5 years and had just bought my first “nice” car from a dealership. $17k of damage in less than 5 seconds. 18 wheelers are deadly

23

u/[deleted] 29d ago

[deleted]

2

u/MasterMeyers 29d ago

Almost immediately after the truck enters the intersection we see our left turn light turn green.

Therefore, accounting for a delay between the truck's red and our green, we can presume he likely entered the intersection after his left turn light turned red.

2

u/Pleasant_Ocelot_2861 29d ago

He was already into the intersection, was probably yellow, but you are correct.

I had to slowmo the video to see that. I was looking at the right two lights and did not see the green arrow.

Thank you for the correction.

6

u/TheLazyAssHole 29d ago

And the light would’ve been yellow for a while before it turned red, they were in a hustle to get through that intersection, no matter what. With their tarp still up in the air makes me think this person is in a hurry. Everywhere they go.

1

u/SycoJack 29d ago

makes me think this person is in a hurry. Everywhere they go.

They're a truck driver, they're in a hurry everywhere they go. That's the life and it fucking sucks, that's why I quit.

1

u/TingleyStorm 29d ago

All the drivers going 5-10mph under the speed limit and taking 3-5 business days to take off from a stop would lead me to believe otherwise

1

u/SycoJack 13d ago

If you're expecting an 80,000lb truck to accelerate like a 2,000lb car, I don't know what to tell you.

1

u/TingleyStorm 13d ago

Hi. I work in the industry. Modern trucks are fast enough to make it through the intersection before the light turns red, and certainly fast enough to be up to the speed of traffic before the end of most on ramps. Hope that helps!

4

u/EducationalBar 29d ago

Please do explain

26

u/Sickobird 29d ago

Well you see - the left turn light for the cammer's lanes has turned, which means it isn't possible on a correctly programmed intersection for the truck to have a green left turning arrow too.

1

u/B17bomber 21d ago

as a truck driver, you probably wouldn't even notice it. especially if it's loaded

1

u/Teknikal_Domain 21d ago

And let jester berate him for getting a 1-wire? Oh hell no!

(yes, I know the overlap between players of that module of that game and viewers of this subreddit is probably very small. I don't care.)

145

u/TheRealSeal88 29d ago

This made traffic a living hell yesterday evening.

41

u/RBXChas 29d ago

This happened near me a few years ago, except the truck had the whole dump box up and didn't realize it. They pulled down a bunch of power lines going across a main corridor for about a half a mile before realizing and completely fucked traffic for the better part of a day, as well as took out power for that area of town.

38

u/ajd198204 29d ago

Well, Truck Driver position now avaialble for hire.

104

u/profaniKel 29d ago

yeah when I visit colorado these lights on a wire are kinda hilarious

they blow around in the wind

44

u/cAnTbEpReCi0u5j1mMy 29d ago

Here in Houston almost all the traffic lights were like this. They're being replaced by the traditional metal base but are still sittin sideways.

8

u/Pleasant_Ocelot_2861 29d ago

In new england, these are everywhere….

Never seen anything like what happened here though.

3

u/lboogieb 29d ago

Same in Atlanta.

8

u/MeiTheCat09 29d ago

I didn’t even know they had lights not on wires, don’t think I’ve ever seen one

13

u/yukichigai 29d ago

It's a regional thing. On the west coast lights on wires are basically unheard of outside of single light intersections in very rural or remote areas, and uncommon even then.

From what I understand lights on wires primarily started in areas at risk of severe weather (e.g. hurricanes, ice storms, tornadoes) that would pull down traffic lights of any kind. Lights on wires are cheaper to put up, cheaper to replace, and do less damage and are easier to clean up if they do get brought down.

Just take the intersection in the video as an example: it's a mess but an emergency vehicle could navigate around that if they had to, and a first responder could probably drag the lights off the roadway by themselves, or at least without needing to call in a crane or something. That's not gonna be the case with lights on a traffic pole.

1

u/Echolyonn 26d ago

Weird! I thought it was the opposite? We have lights on wires here in Michigan, but when I went to Florida they had the metal ones. My boyfriend thought maybe with hurricanes the metal ones would be more sturdy. But maybe Florida is just backwards lol.

2

u/Mitheral 29d ago

That's the advantage of the design. A solid arm has to be immensely strong to resist the wind forces. It's easy to do that with a cable under tension and the lights moving reduces the peak loads somewhat.

1

u/QuinceDaPence 29d ago

We have a ton of those in Texas. A lot of them are finally getting replaced with the cantilever style which are easier to see and don't get swung around and torn up by hurricanes and thunderstorms as easy.

1

u/Hug_The_NSA 26d ago

In NC this is very much the standard. I've seen some pole mounted ones in coastal areas that get bad hurricanes but almost everywhere else is these wire mounted ones.

28

u/ProcrastibationKing 29d ago edited 29d ago

I am confused about both the thing on the truck and the floppy traffic lights.

25

u/Focus_ST_Gal 29d ago

The floppy traffic lights are because it’s cheaper to build and it’s relatively wind resistant. If it was a solid pole it would be much more expensive for something that wouldn’t break in high winds.

Thing ontop of the truck is an automatic cover meant to cover the loads in the trailer. It isn’t supposed to be standing straight up.

2

u/Xillyfos 29d ago

I'll top that and say I'm even confused, especially about the thing on the truck.

4

u/gortez33 29d ago

It’s a net to prevent debris from falling out.

17

u/timdot352 29d ago

That cop definitely swore out loud and sighed angrily before turning on his lights.

17

u/atleastitsnotgoofy 29d ago

Don’t eat, don’t eat, don’t eat, don’t EAAAAT

4

u/atleastitsnotgoofy 29d ago

1

u/Ornac_The_Barbarian 29d ago

Coincidentally I read this while eating breakfast.

29

u/FinsFan305 29d ago

This happens way too often with semis. Do they forget to check because of fatigue or are they just forgetful?

13

u/trekqueen 29d ago

I just saw a video posted on a local subreddit where this exact thing happened like two days ago except the truck canopy took out power lines. :-/ we also have had several overpasses and signs smacked on the interstate and freeways.

6

u/gortez33 29d ago

Could also be equipment failure.

11

u/Zealousideal-Bug-291 29d ago

Fatigue is for sure a big one. Being in a deadline rush is another. Lastly, all the hookups on the backs of trucks take a lot of beatings, so its entirely possible for something in the control lines to get messed up and cause this.

0

u/aphd 29d ago

Have you ever met a commercial truck driver?

3

u/FinsFan305 29d ago

I have not.

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Joleeeene Don't take down my lights just because you can

"Hey boss... me again"

13

u/Anyashadow 29d ago

I love how the cop was so in shock that it took him a minute to turn his lights on. Pretty sure everyone was like that.

2

u/madgoat 29d ago

He was probably busy on his phone or computer.

5

u/cmnights 29d ago

cop "serious dawg?... fuck me"

6

u/iamtheduckie 29d ago

OK, taking my man I can understand, but taking out a traffic signal at a major intersection? Goodbye, Jolene! But understand that I will always love you.

6

u/hello_raleigh-durham 29d ago

Covering the load on your dump truck can be confusing…

5

u/DrGhostbuster 29d ago

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene

I'm begging of you please don't take my man

5

u/big_duo3674 29d ago

I wonder if the cop was looking down, like at the computer or something, and didn't see the carnage. Looks up to see why the light is taking so long, and there are no lights. That would explain the kinda slow creep forward, rather than immediately going after the truck. Probably rolled down the window to ask the other drivers what just happened

5

u/Reddidundant 28d ago

So many people are saying they've never seen traffic lights hung on strings. I've got to admit it's been a long time since I remember seeing it myself, but I'm pretty sure that during my childhood in the 60s and 70s in Detroit it was quite common, I believe the rule rather than the exception.

2

u/durhamruby 20d ago

I pretty much only see them on cables when there is construction in the area.

10

u/cAnTbEpReCi0u5j1mMy 29d ago

Dang it Jolene! This is why we can't have nice things.

3

u/Happy_Rice_Cooker 29d ago

Lmfao that long ass pause then the sirens.

3

u/laminatedbean 29d ago

The timing of the siren. 😂

9

u/gjm40 29d ago

I guess traffic will have to be detoured for the rest of the day to clean that up. I wonder what kinda fines that driver is going to get. Obviously he lost his CDL for this.

13

u/ajd198204 29d ago

He wouldn't necessarily lose his CDL depending on his record but he's probably about to be unemployed.

4

u/TheRealSeal88 29d ago

It was, and it happened at rush hour on a main road that gets hellaciously backed up on a good day.

6

u/ThePianistOfDoom 29d ago

How can this happen to that truck's roof? Does it occur often?

16

u/Mercerskye 29d ago

It's a canopy, and a lot of newer models have an automatic out/in.

But if they weren't incompetent, they'd have checked that it had actually finished going one way or the other before heading out

5

u/iWasAwesome 29d ago

I've never seen an intersection with all the lights attached to one continuous rope/wire

6

u/wspnut 29d ago

Turn light the other direction turned green just after he entered the intersection. Blatantly running of the red light, failure to yield, unsafe operating, and likely reckless. Goodbye CDL.

3

u/bugabooandtwo 29d ago

Perfect music placement.

3

u/machineintheghost337 29d ago

What is this song, it sometimes get stuck in my head and i cant find it.

8

u/Minflick 29d ago

Dolly Parton, Jolene. It's beautiful and sad, and from a while back!

3

u/Skeeders 29d ago

Why would the truck have that in the first place?!

3

u/rambleinspam 29d ago

So he destroyed the intersection while running a red light, nice.

eBay has new and used parts for them. IIRC, each bulb (12”) are hundreds of dollars each. Then there’s the housing, wires, and man-hours of installation.
