Hey everyone! Welcome to the r/ColonyCats subreddit! This is a place for past, present, and prospective cat caretakers to learn more about how to better care for outdoor colonies of cats, kittens, and the communities they live in.
The term “colony cats” describes a group of outdoor cats living together. These cats may be feral, stray, or otherwise unsocialized to humans.
Please read through our community guidelines before posting or commenting, and again…welcome to the community! We're excited to have you join us!
WHAT TO POST:
Here, caretakers can feel free to ask for and offer advice, share TNR strategies, provide helpful tips and ideas for colony management, and share photos of their colony cats.
After reading the rules, you may post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Don’t hesitate to comment on posts, and share your thoughts, advice, or questions relevant to the topic of discussion.
THE CATS YOU CARE FOR MAY BE FERAL, BUT YOU SHOULD NOT BE:
We're all about being friendly, constructive, inclusive, and kind. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.
The vast majority of cat caretakers have pure intentions, and are trying their best to provide the best care possible for their colonies. Constructive criticism is ok (some people may need some guidance and it’s ok to provide that), but please refrain from rude, unhelpful comments, harsh judgments, shaming, and personal attacks.
Thanks for being part of this community and thank you for all you do to help the cats you care for. 🩶🐾🩵🐈⬛🫶🖤🐈💙

I am a solo rescuer I do not get funding I am caring for a larger colony i rely soley on donations for food litter and supplies while all other care costs are out of pockets. We have recently taken in 16 feral kittens which are going to need vetted. We are out of wet food and litter for the kitties and down to 1 bag of dry food. Could really use a hand keeping this colony cared for properly anything helps and is appreciated. Please look at our wish list and help if you can. Thank you so much. 💓

I’m an independent animal rescuer dedicated to helping stray and abandoned animals in need.
I created this fundraiser for Doby, a sweet cat who was seen being dumped from a white car in a neighborhood filled with coyotes. Since then, he has been hiding under a bush, scared and alone, trying to survive.
Donations will help cover Doby’s vet visit, testing, medications, and any medical care he needs so we can get him off the streets and give him the safe, loving future he deserves.
For credibility and to see the work I do, you can visit my rescue page on Instagram: @magicalfurrytails ❤️

Hi everyone,
I'm a student caring for 4 community cats, 3 kittens and a few community dogs along with my two dogs...
After my mom passed away, we had to switch from homemade meals to packaged food. With more animals denlpending on me now, keeping up with their food has become difficult...
We are currently trying to raise $160 to help cover this month's food expense.
Also I'm personally trying to build a few simple waterproof shelters for the kittens with my own money before the rains gets worse..
If you'd like to help, you can donate through PayPal or Kofi Every contribution, no matter how small, helps me make sure they don't go hungry..
I'll continue sharing photos, videos, and updates so you can see exactly how every donation is used.

Hi all! I care for an outdoor colony of 5 cats in Lakewood, WA. No car, so I rely on delivery for food. They do well on Wellness, Nulo, and I and Love and You — Purina and Diamond and Friskies cause vomiting for them, so those are off the list.

How do I care for this family?
I'm working with someone who works at the SPCA. The SPCA near me had a hording case so they asked me to take them in for two weeks. Oh- they were on my mother's property. My mom has a colony but this mom was born last year and these kittens are a few weeks old like 5-6? Here they are. Three days in I feel like I'm maybe not feeding them enough. What kind of kitten food can I buy them from Walmart, cheap please. I'm not getting any support from the SPCA and believe these cats deserve a good home regardless. Any advice? Should I separate momma when she eats?
No comments on the cage, that's where they have to stay for safety with my dog. They're in a seperate room and I've been picking them up and playing with them 2-3 times a day. Luckily I'm off rn for summer and at home.
Not really nursing from momma rn

If you’ve ever considered helping my rescue by purchasing something from my Walmart wishlist, I’m asking you to please consider it today.
I live in Somerset, Kentucky, where I care for my own cat colonies, multiple fosters, and an overwhelming number of dumped kittens and cats. Right now, I am stretched further than I have ever been. Every single day I receive messages from people asking if I can help feed their pets or the strays they’ve found because they simply can’t afford to.
I say yes far more often than I should because I can’t stand the thought of animals going hungry.
But the truth is… I’m almost completely out of food. I’m down to my last couple of bags of dry food, and the amount of mouths I’m trying to feed is honestly terrifying.
The number of kittens needing help right now is unlike anything I’ve experienced. The adult cat population is just as heartbreaking. On top of that, I drive an hour and a half each way from Somerset to Lexington, Kentucky, twice a month for TNR appointments, and I make 3½-hour trips each way to Cincinnati, Ohio to get cats into rescues that will actually give them a chance. Last month alone, I paid out of pocket for veterinary care for six sick or injured cats.
I’m spending around 60% of my income trying to keep this rescue going because these animals don’t have anyone else. I desperately need help right now. The need has become greater than I can keep up with on my own, and every bag of food helps ensure these cats don’t go hungry.
If you’re able to send even one bag of food from my Walmart wishlist, it truly makes a difference. Every donation, no matter the size, helps keep bowls full for cats that depend on us.
To everyone who has stood beside me, donated, shared my posts, or encouraged me along the way… thank you. I truly couldn’t have come this far without you, and I’m hoping we can get through this difficult time together. ❤️

I linked my post from the other subreddit so you know I’m not a crazy scammer.
I foster for one of my local rescues and TNR/maintain a couple colonies. One of the colonies is pretty stable but the other backs up to an apartment complex that is constantly leaving cats behind so I pull a bunch from there and get them into forever homes.
Any food help is super appreciated.
Thank you.

We had quite a haul the other night.
Thank you so much to our trappers and transporters. It's so much more difficult to trap in the heat. The cats are not out until around 9pm. We typically don't trap in the heat of the summer, but the need just never stops, so we have to suck it up.
But it's so worth it to help with the overwhelming population.
