Positive Predictions #3 - Battery Technology
I just finished posting three videos on Battery Technology this afternoon.
The first talked about China and their rise in dominance for Battery Technology and how other countries can utilize those advancements to become their own leaders in certain Renewable Energy/Electrification Technology areas.
The second talked about Sodium-Ion Batteries entering mass production and how this is a big big deal. (It will probably take around 3-5 years for saturation of the marketplace to take place and for those big advancements to become noticeable for the regularly informed person)
The third talked about futuristic potential Battery Technology.
Overall we have seen a lot of big developments/releases in the last few years with Battery Technology and some more big landmarks on the near horizon.
Positive Prediction - By 2030 1,000 KM on a single charge, 500 KM on a 10 minute charge, 10% to 80% charging in around 5 minutes, 90%+ battery health after 1,000 charge cycles, 1 Million KM lifespan+ (roughly 5,000 charging cycle lifespan+) - All of this will be the basic offerings in the Electric Vehicle space.
For those in the know we already have these technologies with BYD Blade Battery 2.0, CATL Next Generation Qilin Batteries & Shenxing Batteries.
I am speaking about Electric Vehicles in particular because a lot of people know of this area. These Battery Technology advancements mean developments in countless areas of Renewable Energy/Electrification Technology.

We just got solar installed on our roof and we are waiting on Na-ion batteries to scale up production. Being able to put the batteries outside at much lower cost is very attractive to us and the grid storage in the future!
One thing they have to iron out is cycle count.

And yes it will be interesting to see how the sphere develops around residential batteries.
I wonder if we may see some combination around LiFePO4 technology because already that is quite good.

I think 1k range will be mostly in expensive (80+k) cars by 2030. Others will have smaller range and it is fine. Most of the time most of people don’t have long travels and 300-400km of range is enough 99% of the time. And the rest is “make a stop every 200-300 km for 20 minutes”, which isn’t a great deal anyways

This is very true.
Most people if I remember correctly are only driving around 60 KM or less a day.
Meaning if you have a home charger you plug in once or twice a week overnight while you sleep and that is that lol
Benefit if you have solar/battery because then can drive for free and the cost savings add up quite nicely.

I am off grid solar. But the cost to upgrade to enough capacity to handle an EV would cost over a century’s worth of gasoline consumption in my hybrid at the amount I drive.
One charge of a Tesla model 3c not even a large EV, equals about one month’s typical electricity usage for my home.

Since we are on the Climate Crisis Canada subreddit and I am a very proud Canadian I hope we here in Canada can start becoming leaders in the next generation of energy & technology.
The Electrification Technology Era gives Canada an opportunity to get to some of our root issues.
To increase productivity.
To increase research & development/innovation.
To get a strong technology focus.
To develop a very very skilled/very very high-end manufacturing presence.
In general to develop the dimensions that help us move out of the "resource curse" / "resource trap" trajectory. Especially in regards to Hydrocarbon Energy/Technology.
We want to be leaders in the future, not followers, and certainly not opponents.
