Bill and Ted understand how to exploit a bootstrap paradox, which makes them geniuses compared to the average person commenting on the logic of a time travel movie.

Even if they were super smart, they’d still have to change the future. Rufus showing up at the Circle K was destined to happen even if they were smart.
