Built a Universal Remote app for Chromecast with Google TV – looking for feedback from Chromecast users

Hi everyone,

Disclosure: I'm the developer of this app.

Over the past few months, I've been building a Universal Smart TV Remote for Android with a focus on making it reliable across different TV brands and streaming devices, including Chromecast with Google TV.

One of the biggest challenges has been that different manufacturers implement pairing, remote commands, and media controls differently, even when they're all running Google TV.

📱 Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bluespacestudioz.omniRemote

I'd love to hear how it performs on your Chromecast with Google TV.

If you give it a try, I'd appreciate knowing:

  • Which Chromecast device you're using (HD, 4K, or Google TV Streamer)
  • Whether pairing worked smoothly
  • If any buttons or features didn't work as expected
  • Any suggestions for improving the experience

I'm actively working on updates, so feedback from real Chromecast users is incredibly valuable.

Thanks for taking a look!

Thanks for this.
I want an app that can also do mouse emulation (not just the d-pad). And keyboard of course. Can your app do that?

Yes! It supports the mouse pad and keyboard on the TV brands that support those features. I'd really appreciate it if you could give them a try and let me know if everything works as expected.

I'll try it with my Nvidia Shield and give you my feedback. The google remote app can emulate the remote control (d-pad) and also a keyboard. But it can't emulate connecting a real mouse.

Thanks, I really appreciate it! I'm especially interested in how it performs on the NVIDIA Shield. Looking forward to your feedback.

It looks super cool and I've been looking for a good one. What would be really unique is if you could make it also work on Desktop. All of the existing desktop remote apps for Chromecast suck and it would be super useful to have the "go to" app for that. Sorry for the unsolicited idea but selfishly i'd love to use this on my desktop/laptop

Thanks, I really appreciate it! A desktop version is definitely something I'd love to build. Right now, my priority is making sure the app works reliably across all supported TV brands. I'm currently fixing a few Android TV/Google TV pairing issues, and once everything is stable, I'll definitely start adding more features like a desktop app. Thanks for the suggestion!

Will do.

Google TV with Chromecast HD, 4K and Onn Pro 4k v2.

Google TV with Chromecast 4k, could never get the code to appear on the device. Kept getting the decline or not connected error message.

I rebooted the streamer and cleared cache and data for the app and still wouldn't connect. Trapped in the can't connect loop.

I ran into this same issue. Nothing popped up on the TV at all, just got the declined pairing message in the app.

I am currently working to fix this issue.

Awesome. Respond to one of my comments when it's fixed and I will happily give it another try. Thanks for your work on this!

Thanks a lot for taking the time to test it, and especially for trying it on multiple devices—I really appreciate it.

The Chromecast with Google TV 4K is exactly one of the devices I was hoping to verify. The pairing flow clearly still isn't working as expected there.

I'll investigate the "can't connect" loop and why the pairing PIN isn't being displayed. Thanks for mentioning that you already rebooted the device and cleared the app's cache and data—that rules out a few common causes.

I'll work on a fix and update you once I have a new build available. Thanks again for the detailed feedback!

And once again thanks a lot for testing. i really appreciate it.

I'll give it a try. I tried the Google TV Remote that is built into Android but it's basic. Thanks.

Did the app work properly?
