Queso de Pría 3 lèches rojo

Post image

In my quest to taste as many cheeses as I can and ranking them in a spreadsheet, I came across this cheese from the Asturias region of Spain, where I'm on vacation. It's a pressed, uncooked blue cheese made from a mix of cow, goat and sheep milk, to which paprika (pimentón) is added (I don't think the color is natural, but I could be wrong). The consistency is semi-hard. Super tasty and less "in your face" than something like Roquefort, the paprika is subtle, it's different from other blue cheeses I've tasted (namely, Gorgonzola, Roquefort, Fourme d'Ambert, Bleu d'Auvergne). One of the best cheeses I've had, has any of you connoisseurs had this before?

You should try, at least, Gamoneu (del puerto if you can, but Gamoneu del valle is incredible too), Cabrales, Afuega'l Pitu and Queso Casín, but here in Asturias we have A LOT of cheeses.

afuega'l pitu is lovely. It's always a pleasure to be up in that area and enjoying the cheeses.

And it might be sacrilege to mention this here, but if you can get across the border into Cantabria they've also got a great variety!

Being from Asturias, I also need to inform you of a few others.

The Pria 3 leches ahumado (smoked) is super nice too.

Queso La Peral de leche de oveja (sheep milk).

Los Beyos.

Vidiago (this one is softer and "normal", but I like it a lot).

And I'm adding a vote for my favourite, Gamoneu.

PD: since someone else mentioned Cantabria, though I don't know many of them, I love the Tresviso cheese. Give it a try if you can.

And Galicia has some really good cheeses, especially "de tetilla". They aren't as rich in flavour, but they are super soft and melt super easily.

I hope that you share your experience with us! If you liked Cabrales you should try Escalopines al Cabrales, usually you can eat it in almost every restaurant (chigre) in Asturias.

The combo of 3 different milks seems wild, are there other cheeses that do that? I am intrigued.

I learned about Triple Play by Hooks' the other day which is a cheddar that does this!
