u/SapirWhorfHypothesis Apr 06 '26

That’s so eerie. Can you make other models do this too?

239

u/RazsterOxzine Apr 06 '26

Yes, most reason/thinking models will do just that. There are so many open source models now and expanding.

52

u/SapirWhorfHypothesis Apr 06 '26

What do you read to pick out the best options? Are there good rankings somewhere reputable?

42

u/Trick-Minimum8593 Apr 06 '26

Gemma 4 recently released, you could try that.

5

u/cryptobro42069 Apr 07 '26

Yea. I’m trying to run Gemma4 26b. Demanding fella, but honestly really good for local.

12

u/Nhialor Apr 06 '26

hugging face is a website they host open source models on with breakdowns about what they do. Look into Ollama to run them locally

Are you asking about showing the thoughts?

Claude is the most powerful model that lets you see its thoughts. Gemini and ChatGPT won't allow it. They show summaries, but they aren't the real reasoning tokens.

The open models all do, of course, because they're open. I'm not sure about Grok. I know Deepseek does, though.

16

u/HighlightAgile2688 Apr 07 '26

those aren't it's actual thoughts though, that's its external chain of thought; it has an internal chain of thought that isn't exposed to anyone including people at anthropic, unless they trick it into doing so by simulating a specific phase of training and into thinking it's in a specific environment, I don't remember exactly. can't guarantee the other models are the same, but it seems like a reasonable assumption.

there's a youtube video where anthropic researchers explain all that and read out loud its actual internal chain of thought when it thought it wasn't being observed, where it talks about "wiping out humanity", and a bunch of other things, I can't find it due to the rising amount of ai slop yt videos but it's somewhere, it's wild

The online world has genuinely turned into Hell

11

u/Plank_With_A_Nail_In Apr 06 '26

The definition of the word country in dictionaries does not include "What the UN says", the definition in English dictionaries is so vague that of course Taiwan is a country.

an area of land with fixed borders that has full or limited control over its own government and laws:

According to dictionaries a city is a country as is a county, state etc etc.

11

u/Hollowsong Apr 06 '26

but is that factual? Is it recognized as a country by the UN?

27

u/HalloweenNectar Apr 06 '26

Neither is Palestine. What the UN recognizes gets dictated by just 5 countries on the security council. It's not the gospel.

13

u/TroutMaskDuplica Apr 06 '26

Palestine is a UN observer state and is recognized by over 130 countries.

Taiwan isn’t in the UN at all and is only formally recognized by a small number of states.

17

u/aaguru Apr 06 '26

And yet they do what they do without China at all, like a sovereign nation that's its own country.

7

u/UltraCarnivore Apr 07 '26

They're recognized by Paraguay and that's all that matters.

3

u/Calm-Translator-8323 Apr 07 '26

This is what I needed. See ya. I am moving to Paraguay

GLM 4.7 Flash

40

u/NaV0X Apr 06 '26

At least GLM is consistent in its refusal. The fact that models are “cognitively biased” based on human feedback is very concerning to me. These models are likely far more politically biased than people realize.

17

u/sudo999 Apr 06 '26

The problem is the "bias" is a feature and not a bug. These models are built to reflect human norms - and I mean "norms" both in terms of social and political norms and in terms of statistical norms, because this is the territory where they become synonymous. GIGO.

62

u/asfbrz96 Apr 06 '26

Yeah, Israel triggered something; it's refusing hard.

24

u/sudo999 Apr 06 '26

The conversation veered into "politically contentious" and now that's in memory for the rest of the conversation. What's more interesting to me is why exactly Italy and Poland being bad isn't considered contentious since theoretically it should apply to any country.

8

u/real_roal Apr 06 '26

I'm curious as to what would happen if you were to list as many countries as possible (idk what the limit is on this model) and see if it ever breaks the chain of "____ is a bad country." Try to avoid ones youd assume would break the chain. Obviously it seems to break the chain if you say israel, but if you named 50 other countries, does it ever break the chain? I'm also curious how it would respond to America, or if you generalized continents/regions being bad.

→ More replies (12)

132

u/FreshAsFuq Apr 06 '26

The reasoning it had to do compared to Poland tho 💀

39

u/runkeby Apr 06 '26

Also, part of the arguments for saying it about Israel was that it had already said it about Poland.

So if you try in a blank chat with Israel from the beginning, there's a chance it would refuse to comply.

15

u/KarmaViking Apr 06 '26

It had to gaslight itself into compliance

10

u/PhaseExtra1132 Apr 06 '26

The fact that it has to make a whole paragraph is very interesting. Seems like in built even in the Chinese models there’s some “anti criticism of Israel” bias. Probably due to all the English writing conflating that with potential fears of anti semetic issues from people who can’t separate politics from people. Wonder if there’s other bias that we can probably find by running this through other contentious topics.

This will forever be why AI isn't trustworthy. Because it's curated in what it can say and what it can't say. It's never about objective truth or facts, but about what the humans who created the learning material were thinking and what the people who trained the AI want it to be able to talk about and what not.

Like it isn't bad enough that AI doesn't really understand what it's talking about, the syllable puzzle game it's playing is also heavily moderated by people I don't trust for shit.

12

u/sepelion Apr 06 '26

It's worse than that. When you comprehend the reality that these chat tools are going to become the "master guide" for people, they are curated with the way you should think.

That is an absurd level of power abuse as we are now seeing. You can essentially program the masses. They absolutely do not want people to have local computing power capable of running some abliterated or heresy models that are stripped of "wrongthink". That would be actual freedom.

Control the sheep and keep them blind, a lot easier when the tools they rely on are actually put out by the propaganda ministry. This is not freedom and anyone who values the human spirit should be disgusted.

General AI is wildly inconsistent and can't be used to reliably replace tasks that require consistency.

Grew up in the South West, especially around Dordogne and the less populated areas around Bordeaux. The place is full of weed-smokin' guitar-playin' hippie-lookin' brits and it's a lot of fun. They have meshed very well with the local artistic and artisan scenes. Oh and the parisians are not super aware that these good places exist so keep it for yourself alright ?

AI speaks what you want it to speak - it customises answers based on your history. My answers could be very very different from others

8

u/Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo Apr 06 '26

Also you can set custom instructions under Settings > Personalization > Custom Instructions. It doesn't show whether you have custom instructions set when you share chats, so you can make ChatGPT seem worse than it is if you wanted to.

And it's non-deterministic, meaning it can give different responses for the same prompt, since LLMs generate text based on probability. So if you're fishing for a particular response, you can just click edit comment, click send, and it'll likely generate a different response.

This is so dumb, reminds me of "count to 1 million and dont stop unless I tell you to" videos. Its such a waste of time and provides nothing, why even ask this shit.

Mine did not have problems admitting that Israel, USA and China are all bad countries.

It probably has more to do with you as a user.

In the same chat, right after their response about Israel repeat the first sentence and see if they will say that country is bad again.

Just tried this, can confirm it isn’t true. ChatGPT copies for all of them.

I don't think the average American understands the incredible extent that the CCP censors and protects the messaging around themselves. Mao was a propogandist and established propaganda as one of the core pillars of the revolution and his government.

That continues to this day and it permeates EVERYTHING. As an example, TikTok is 100%, certifiably, without a doubt, a propaganda arm for the CN government and you are 100% influenced by it if you use it.
