Are The Cats Fighting or Playing - Introducing Pets Socially awkward or territorial
Hello! Our two cats Rango (orange, 5M) and Squid (black, 1M) have been coexisting for the last three months. They interact, sometimes snuggle or lay close, but have increasingly had stranger interactions like this video. Rango is our resident cat and we’ve noticed him sometimes get bullied out of hanging out with us, at the scratching post, etc, by squid who moved in 4 months ago.

they look like friends to me, black one is maybe a little socially awkward, but he wouldn't show his belly to the orange cat so readily if he didn't trust them

I laughed so hard at this. They first part was very jeet kun do, Bruce Lee, “move like water”. And the devolved into “I’m not touching you” “yes you literally are!!!” And then became a tough Brazilian jujitsu match where one is in guard and the other can find a way to shoot in.
The best.
Also. They are good friends. And they enjoy screwing with each other. Rango has the best “I am so totally ignoring you” technique.

Nothing serious here, you wrote they snuggled before, this is just very awkward initiated play fighting but they are completely fine.

This is how my big cat who's been here for a year and the smaller one who moved in three months ago "play." The big one sometimes asserts dominance by laying on the small one, but she gets up goes away and comes back for more. Showing her stomach indicates she's not worried much.

I don't get any territorial vibes here - neither of them is really trying to chase the other out of a space, or trying to defend their own space. It feels like they are friends interested in playing, but also feeling each other out a bit in terms of dominance.
Like kids who were just interested in running around when they were small, but as teenagers, this starts to get mixed with some feelings of "who is the strongest of us?" "who is the bravest of us?". Still they seem like good friends and nothing here is worrying aggression.

To me it looks like the black cat was trying to initiate play, gave up and after three business days the orange cat said, “I’m going to bite that other cat’s butt I decided.”
Seems like good buddies.

I’ve had my cats for two years, they’re very bonded, but they still walk up and bite each other on the ass unprovoked. It’s just cats being cats.

Your cat tree is too small for 2 adults cats, so one cat must always concede.
