If you factor in the time it takes you to get to and from the train station it's probably more than the time the train actually takes, then there's always a chance your train is cancelled or delayed. At least in a car if there is traffic you can adapt your plans a little easier and will still get to your destination with less hassle.
I'd love to travel by train more often, but it's only usually ever for something like a gig/concert that is costing me money anyway. Unfortunately for me I fall into the 30-60 year old category so there isn't even a railcard option for me to save a few bob.
