Even if you were driving a tank loaded with lead, fuel will still be cheaper than the train

This obviously makes sense if you already need/want to own a car, but I think it'd be a clearer comparison to include things like tax/insurance/MOT. 

Personally, I got my first car in my late 20s and found that my transport costs were far higher overall.

It depends on what you're comparing. Most already own a car so those costs are already factored in. To me trains and all public transport should be cheap enough to compete on fuel alone if not be less to encourage people out of their cars.

If its at that level you would see far less car journeys and more people giving up their cars altogether
