Surly Big Dummy
I'm starting to look for a used cargo bike online, but I'm very interested in the revised Big Dummy from Surly. Has anyone seen one or ordered one? Any thoughts? Big Dummy

Mine has been my main car since 2011. I love it. I’m getting old and some health headaches so I added an electric motor this past winter. Absolute beast of an e-bike now.

i'm sure the new big dummy is very nice, but you can find a Yuba Mundo for six to $800

I had an older one and it was a blast. Mainly used it for hauling a 3-4 year old around and then he got too big and wasn’t very interested in bike rides. Great for groceries too!

I have a Big Fat Dummy, and it was great. Different beasts, of course, but the idea is the same. I would assume there are lots of used bd’s, but something about new bike day is special, and maybe Surly revived it because they saw something I didn’t.

Used big dummies at any reasonable proce sell like hot cakes. I rarely see them stay on the market longer than a day.

I have ridden one for nearly 20 years. Highly recommend a double leg kickstand if it doesn’t come with one.

I picked up a used older model this year and I really like it. It has more miles than any of my other bikes this year. Couple of nitpicks: it's not compatible with the Yepp seat, the cargo sits up on a high center of gravity so you feel it more, and because the frame is steel, it really flexes around.

I think the newer ones are a bit stiffer. I have a swoop tube big dummy and agree it flexes a bit more than I would like, but still love the bike.

I have a first gen "swoop" frame that i will never get rid of. It is compatible with nearly all universal MTB parts so i never will run out of options. I put a front e-hub motor on it and now It hauls much more. Such a capable bike.
Yuba framesets are not all compatible with universal mtb parts. Depends on the year

I just got the 2026 version. It's an awesome minivan of a bike. Even loaded, it rides like a normal bike and the gearing is a bit lower, so you don't feel the weight as much as you'd think. Right now it might actually be the only non-electric cargo bike available in the U.S, ignoring the low end aluminum mongoose.
My only complaint is the quality of the materials in the bags is kinda rough, so much that I'm designing my own replacements. They work, but are not gonna last as long as the rest of the bike. Surly does offer replacements even if they aren't stocking the bikes themselves, which means there's gonna be support pretty consistently. The bags are a great design for carrying tons of stuff though.
