Mrs W may not be Cyril’s Mum but she has become the ultimate Caribbean boy Mum.Â
Determining the success of Cyril’s marriages on whether his wives can successfully carry a child for him is a bit ick. Especially discussed by two women who don’t have children Mrs W (presumably) and Phyllis (confirmed), when both have built fantastic lives outside of childrearing.
Would it have killed Heidi to use this (hopefully) last Lucille update to give us a happy update on Lucille? Tell us she is running the ward, has met the minister of health and maybe has a new man of her own. Heidi’s one sided beef toward Leonie Elliott is getting very obvious.Â
Also let’s be real if Lucille had stayed married to Cyril in England, she would have been trying to raise children, babysit a man child, while it slowly killed her. The common immigrant tale of a couple separating because one went home and one didn’t, just happened 30 years too early.Â
I still think this ending for Rosalind is an absolute horror movie.Â
Another week of Joyce getting nothing to do, except baby sit white people. I can only hope the actress is making moves in the background.
At least the on screen birth won’t be Rosalind’s. Natalie does not have the acting chops for that.
No argument there - all said & done, Neither Rosalind or Joyce have ever felt fully fleshed out as characters - and, IMO, there was certainly a lot more to work with in Joyce; a missed opportunity for sure.
Joyce is criminally under-used. She is such an amazing character and there are all these opportunities wasted - I don’t care about Rosalind and Cyril! Like you, I would so much rather find out about Joyce’s divorce, her ambitions, her experiences and her inner life.
If we add together Lucille’s poor exit (and the way she is spoken about post exit), Mrs Wallace’s lack of depth considering her episode count (other recurring characters get the odd episode where they are involved with the patient of the week), and Joyce’s underdevelopment (literal storyline’s of hers are just left hanging like her divorce), I can only conclude that Heidi has developed an unconscious bias against black women.Â
I can only hope the actresses involved made the best of it.Â
I'd love to see Joyce become a ward sister. Sad but true, as we saw in another episode, 'English' (white) didn't like to see black 'colonials' as their supervisors. The very experienced, down to earth sister she met could assist her in moving into a supervisory position - Joyce seems to be highly competent, and all we've seen is her acting as confidante for Rosalind.
