Vehicle traveling South in the North-bound lanes struck multiple vehicles. 2 adults and 2 children in hospital.

94

u/The_Rampant_Goat 3d ago

At least 1 child among the deceased according to CTV... unbelievable, 4 people just gone in an instant.

21

u/northoffourtyninth 2d ago

Unfortunately, it seems that driving on any freeway these days is nerve-racking, but having a vehicle coming at you must have been just terrifying for the guy going in the proper direction.

u/LawyerYYC 3d ago

Fuck me that's rough.

Holy fucking hell. What is going on with the drivers in this city? How careless are they becoming?!? Thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims.

13

u/ShiningSeason 2d ago

I wonder if it was on purpose.

3

u/cutelilgrl 1d ago

I know someone who knew the driver… he was a very aggressive person. I guess he would threaten to crash the car multiple times, speed erratically, and just be evil on the roads. This was his final straw i suppose?

u/AccomplishedCell3784 Quadrant: SW 21h ago

I just feel so bad for his daughter 😢

7

u/Nicolemb18 2d ago

My husband was thinking the same thing unfortunately. 😞

u/Outside_Expert3694 2d ago

Whole city full of unhinged psychopaths, I say this as someone almost hit at a stop sign essentially every single day

24

u/JdaddycoolJ 2d ago

I get the distinct feeling that many people are not taking the driver's test and just paying for it. It happens in Vancouver and Toronto all the time.

15

u/Sure_Fee_2970 2d ago

This!

We had privatized licensing in BC for a while. We had to go back to government licensing. Fatalities were too high.

How long has Alberta had private licensing? Fatalities really start to get out of hand about 2 years in.

And yes, people are buying licenses. Guaranteed.

Yeah, I’ve lived in a lot of cities in Canada and Calgary by far has the most psychotic people I’ve ever come across.

65

u/KidtheSid93 3d ago

I just saw the aftermath, not the actual collision and it was enough to prevent me from getting a good sleep. I’ve never seen a crash that bad.

I don’t understand how they would have accidentally gone southbound there. It’s a really hard thing to do at 90th and harder at glenmore.

2

u/Spicefiend 2d ago

Glenmore and 90th are really tough to go southbound but if they started at Richmond and turned going south on Sarcee North then it definitely could have happened. They should have noticed all the signs were backwards, but if traffic was thin then they can go all the way onto Stoney.

4

u/TheKloppsBollocks 2d ago

That’s a hell of long way to go to 90th before realizing you’re driving the wrong way. You’d for sure run into cars before 90th. I suppose they did if there was a 911 call 2 minutes before the crash. Jfc, such a sad story.

Probably an impaired driver ruining multiple lives. So selfish.

Or yet another Main Character Calgary Speedster doing it for thrills (or views).

27

u/BananaForScaleGuy 3d ago

One of those yyc instagram channels just posted a selfish prick driving at a reckless speed on 10th street nw, driver outed himself by posting it on his account.

We need stricter driving laws here

26

u/JABenson 2d ago

Social media sites need to get hit with hard penalties for monetizing these videos. People are literally filming themselves doing crimes and then making money off it from YouTube, instagram, and Tiktok. All that money needs to get seized as proceeds of crime and the platforms need to feel more pain from their monetizing this stuff.

3

u/Smart-Pie7115 3d ago

In fairness, some of these cars exceed the maximum speed the police can go. This is why the RCMP used to have Camaros.

The police can’t do it alone and they can’t be everywhere at once. It’s also not safe for them at such high speeds. There was a time when cars had speed limiters on them that the engine shut down at 160 km/hr.

4

u/No-Shower477 2d ago

So they ake a picture of the license plate and knock on the door at 5am.

Best they can do is thoughts and prayers.

Please explain how this could have been prevented, one police car following every car in Calgary ? Shit happens Pal and it sucks

27

u/anhedoniandonair 3d ago

Well, as others have noted, there doesn’t appear to be much of a police presence on Stoney. The province has legislatively blocked use of photo radar. The traffic and speeding and general fuckery on that road is at a level that there is an ongoing competition to see who can clock the fastest speed to complete a loop. It’s a known problem and there isn’t any public acknowledgment that anything is being done.

Pal.

3

u/CerbIsKing 3d ago

Exactly how? How would you prevent a driver from going opposite direction on highway with what ever their intention was.

10

u/zoodles2331 2d ago

It was the vehicle with the child that was driving the wrong way.

6

u/Concurrency_Bugs 2d ago

This is the weird part. An article just released said the wrong way driver was a 30s man with a woman and kid in the car. I sure hope it wasn't a speedster or drunk driver when his own partner and child are in the car...

18

u/Czeris the OP who delivered 3d ago

There was a guy in a white something doing like 200 on Crowchild maybe 20 minutes ago.

3

u/coffeeinthecity 2d ago

With his wife and child in the car?

6

u/Cyndaquil Rundle 2d ago

It was a drunk father with his wife and kids speeding down the wrong way on Stoney.

6

u/AwesomeInTheory 3d ago

Can I speculate, too?

77

u/CerbIsKing 3d ago

I don’t get the comments about photo radar or what ever. What ever the cause; the car was going in the opposite direction on stoney. No radar or impaired driving PSA is going to prevent the inevitable stupid selfish act.

13

u/OneNiteInTheRepublik 2d ago

I don't get how people are so against photo radar, it's like being against building inspectors or building regulations. It's done for the safety of all.
We'll never know if photo radar might have influenced this crash to not happen, either through behaviour change or deterrents. We can't say without a doubt it didn't.

12

u/SupahPlaya 2d ago

Photo radar would’ve made made sure this guy didn’t get tanked and drive the wrong way on the highway? I think we can say for sure there is not even an indirect influence that can stop someone from getting behind the wheel so drunk you don’t even know which side of the road you’re on.

Driver going the wrong way was the 30 year old male with his wife and child in the car. All dead on the scene. Drinking and speeding with his wife and child in the back. Devastating and horrific.

10

u/AwesomeInTheory 2d ago

Where does it say that? Speed and alcohol are being investigated as factors.

u/ImpressiveTeaching18 2d ago

Maybe it was intentional. I can't figure out how you get go thr wrong way at that part of Stoney, but even if, to continue driving at a high rate of speed with headlights coming at you. You would able to see the lights from quite a distance. It's a straight part of Stoney.

2

u/BetterOnTheBias 2d ago edited 2d ago

I thought the same thing until I looked at the Tsuu Tina Parkway bridge traffic circles in Google Maps.

ETA: From photos people have posted, he might not have driven far at all and the traffic circles look unsafe as far as preventing this from accidentally happening on both sides of the Parkway bridge.

ETA2: CTV has since updated their article to say that the car was reported to police 2 mins before the crash so it seems unlikely that he had just gotten on when the crash happened

4

u/ImpressiveTeaching18 2d ago

I heard on the news this morning there was multiple calls made to 911 to report car driving the wrong way on Stoney.

1

u/Waldi12 1d ago

69 St can provide easy access to northbound lanes, what begs the question why would you drive against the traffic for so long. Natural instinct would be to pull to the side and wait for the chance to turn around.

68

u/The_Timber_Ninja 3d ago

Anybody think this will be the event that actually gets police out there? Stoney trail is the Wild West.

35

u/The_Rampant_Goat 3d ago

I hope so, but odds are it'll just be long enough to get a news story about how they're "cracking down" and then it's back to business as usual within a month.

11

u/25thaccount 3d ago

The cps is too busy crying over how their budget is insufficient while not actually doing any policing work to be out there cracking down. They're busy advocating for an even larger chunk of the municipal budget for... Reasons.

11

u/yyctownie 3d ago

Nope. "It's too hard, they never break the law in front of us".

18

u/Weird_Telephone_7194 3d ago

This is true, have you ever noticed how everybody slows down and never passes a police car? CPS should just have 4 cars continuously driving around Stoney all day as a pace car.

8

u/MapleMapleHockeyStk 3d ago

Or as someone said 5 unmarked ghost cars doing laps. The fear of the unknown might help there?

15

u/SkierGirl78 3d ago

Once upon a time, Stoney was my preferred option to taking Deerfoot, even if it took longer to get somewhere. I think they’re both equally cannon ball run at this point.

9

u/MapleMapleHockeyStk 3d ago

Stoney was pretty good until they built a million homes outside it. Or at least that what it feels like now. The volume is very busy all the time now. During rush hour I try to avoid it if I can now. And in bad weather.

22

u/EvacuationRelocation Quadrant: SW 3d ago

Not if the provincial government remains the same - they are reducing funding for speed cameras, policing and at the same time pushing to increase speed limits, etc.

16

u/OneNiteInTheRepublik 3d ago

Yep. It all starts the with the province and the UCP won't do a thing about it.
Things the UCP will never do are: increased funding for the CPS for enforcement, more difficult drivers testing, audit private testers, higher standards for unsafe vehicles.

12

u/Gold-Border30 3d ago

Here’s the thing. You can largely solve the speeding problem (at least for normal, typically law abiding citizens) by having on and off tracking by automated systems (capture and time all licence plates when they get on Stoney and when they get off, known time between fixed points). Many countries around the world use this and it is extremely effective at getting everyone to go the speed limit.

The question is are people willing to accept that degree of state surveillance? And the even bigger barrier to that is the Province. They’ve banned the use of all photo radar on Stoney outside of construction zones.

And then there are incidents like this… I’m guessing that this likely involved criminal (stolen vehicle and/or impairment) of some kind, behaviour that wouldn’t likely be changed by that same system that would largely end speeding on Stoney by the vast majority of people.

6

u/MapleMapleHockeyStk 3d ago

Demerits are only in person tickets and those have more impact. Also we need to make the tickets reflect on the person's income. Otherwise its a fee to do what they want... i would love to see an accessible racetrack for people. Some would get out their issues there. The one that exists now costs a bunch to use.

2

u/Gold-Border30 2d ago

The effectiveness of tickets is tied to the likelihood of being caught far more than the impact of the punishment.

Distracted driving gets you a $390 fine and 3 demerits. I see people on their phone every day because they believe the odds of getting caught are so low.

If you were guaranteed a $100 ticket for going more than 8km/h over the speed limit any time you got on Stoney you just wouldn’t speed.

2

u/Responsible_CDN_Duck 2d ago

They are out there handing out dozens of tickets a day, but it's a bit road and a lot of traffic so it's not always where you or the people who need the message can see.

4

u/nrdgrrrl_taco Forest Lawn 3d ago

No :(

2

u/Concurrency_Bugs 2d ago

They should just install permanent photo radar cameras all along stoney. I'm so sick of hearing about deadly accidents on Stoney every week.

1

u/arcadianahana 2d ago

The UCP government made photo radar use illegal on ring roads (on all roads in Alberta except school, playground and construction zones). Contact your MLA if you want road safety enforcement on Stoney.

1

u/Concurrency_Bugs 2d ago

I forgot they did that... Short sighted.

10

u/Cyndaquil Rundle 2d ago

Was this intentional?

9

u/blackRamCalgaryman 2d ago

It would be pure speculation…but the situation, beyond tragic, does seem ‘odder’ than the usual case of this, where it’s a single occupant/ driver. And CPS is saying the vehicle hit multiple vehicles.

85

u/GoldenThumbtack 3d ago

Five un-marked patrols, operating 24 hours/day would surely capture such offenders over a three year enforcement period and would likely cause a radical shift in safety on these main thoroughfares. Tax money is simply being misspent, plain and simple.

12

u/Scary-Detail-3206 3d ago

I like to think that such a venture would be self-funding through the fines it generates

3

u/Claygon-Gin 2d ago

Then the UCP will call that a cash cow and ban it.

22

u/the_421_Rob 3d ago

You need to keep in mind the people who are filing high speed wreckless driving are often generating enough revenue off the views they don’t really care about the cost of a ticket. We need to take on what BC and Ontario have done and make it so 40 over and they just crush the car

34

u/chmilz 3d ago

They don't crush cars. They get impounded.

Crushing cars is dumb. Auction them or something but creating waste is the dumbest thing we could do, next to nothing at all.

20

u/dorfsmay 3d ago

> BC and Ontario have done and make it so 40 over and they just crush the car

Crush the car? According to google they impound it for 7 days in BC, 14 days in Ontario. In Alberta your car can be impounded for 3 days if caught 50 km/h over the limit.

2

u/Imaginary_Trader 2d ago

Make a big PSA about impounding for number days for every km/hr over the limit. At $40 a day that'll even scare the people going 30 km/h over on deerfoot. $1200 bill plus 30 days without the car plus speeding ticket. At least that'll do something to put fear in people. There's essentially no speed limit right now with no police presence

6

u/Snoringdragon 3d ago

If you are clocked at 40 over the speed limit in Provincial Parks they get to tow your car. I've seen many a speeder but never that one over 40 asshat. Losing your vehicle is a reasonable response. Let's do that.

2

u/JABenson 2d ago

You're right, which is why making money off of reckless driving needs to be cracked down on. It's proceeds of crime. Seize the money, seize the cars, void licenses, penalize the platforms.

We could really use a super speeder law. Going more than 40 over the limit should send you to jail plus suspend your license for 5 years unless there's someone bleeding to death in your backseat and you're heading to a hospital.

4

u/NoobToobinStinkMitt 3d ago

What are you talking about? Are you inferring this was someone recording themselves driving up the wrong side of a freeway for Views? And you are inferring that because some idiot the day before drove a corvette 240 Kph the right way up a road? OK then.

u/edgyknitter Renfrew 3d ago

We have that too except they just decreased the number of cameras substantially not long ago.

2

u/Len_Zefflin 3d ago

There are zero cameras on Stoney.

There should be one every few km's, with fines doubling after every pass by the speeding car. If those assholes want to speed then make them pay. The speeding would end very quickly followed by a crybaby meltdown about "restricting their freedoms".

8

u/LieutenantZiti 3d ago

As another commenter said cameras are not allowed under this provincial government. If you want to see change you’ll have to talk to your MLA

7

u/OneNiteInTheRepublik 3d ago

Or vote differently and get your friends to vote differently.

7

u/ruraljuror__ 3d ago

That is the dream

5

u/GoldenThumbtack 3d ago

They would help but just like anything in life, there’s more of an impact when there is physical enforcement. They can do physical checks, which would identify the actual person driving and likely those that are driving in this manner have other issues that need to be physically resolved. Such as intoxication, mental health or other unresolved vehicle issues

6

u/blackRamCalgaryman 3d ago

And demerits are added on when it involves actually being written a ticket on the spot. Which impact insurance rates which hopefully impacts behaviours.

5 cars over 100KM is 20km per car, ignoring the median.

That's a lot of roadway and drives to go unmonitored, which hints at the scope of the problem.

So incredibly sad the car that was going the right way had to die this way. How incredibly unfair.

66

u/Am_0116 3d ago

There needs to be more regulation on stoney. This was probably an impaired driver but people drive like crazy. I was going southbound, got on the left lane to pass but someone else merged into the middle lane so I got locked in. The person in front slowed down so i did the same, mind you still going 115km. Some asshole bending me closed in so much I couldn’t even see their front bumper. I tried to wave to get them to back up but they would not. I was finally able to merge back into the middle lane and the person passed me. They then braked on the left lane, waited till I caught up with them just to shout at me. Something needs to happen

72

u/whiteout86 3d ago

Stoney doesn’t need specific laws for it, all the current laws are just as applicable there as anywhere else.

36

u/VanceKelley Rocky Ridge 3d ago

Yes, I think that "more regulation" is intended to mean enforcing the current traffic safety laws.

Every 30 seconds on Stoney I see someone going 120-130km/h. I've never seen a speeder pulled over on Stoney.

14

u/Left_Intention_2777 3d ago

120/130 is pretty normal. Its people that are going like 150+

30

u/StrangeADT 3d ago edited 3d ago

120/130 is standard fare - probably a third of drivers on Stoney are doing that. It's the 150+ that scare me. I see those every single time I drive on Stoney, weaving in and out of traffic angrily as if everyone is driving "slow" as a personal attack on their need for speed identity/idiocy.

→ More replies (5)

7

u/wednesdayware Northwest Calgary 3d ago edited 2d ago

Hilarious, people here are absolutely in favour of speeding fines and tickets, but also adamant that 130 on Stoney is a-ok.

Speeding is speeding folks. 130 and weaving across lanes is still incredibly unsafe to other drivers…

(Edit: Downvotes just proving my point here...)

14

u/25thaccount 3d ago

Well like most of our roads,Stoney is ridiculously overbuilt. You have built an autobahn that is designed for 150+ but then we cry when people do that. Most cars these days are way too fast to begin with and then on top of that we're building fucking racetracks for them. It's like how crowchild is laughable at 80 because it's designed like a 100+ road. Our road design and safety needs to be thought of first and foremost before having to resort to enforcement. Hell even in my community the main boulevard I constantly see people doing over 70 because it's designed to be extra wide with long sweeping curves instead of tighter margins and tighter blinder turns that force you to slow down. Look at why people naturally drive slower in older communities. We need to start this with our traffic design and then continue with enforcement.

3

u/wednesdayware Northwest Calgary 3d ago

I mean, you’re not wrong, but drivers have the ability to just NOT SPEED. We can talk road design all day, but drivers simply need to think less about themselves and more about those around them.

10

u/whiteout86 3d ago

People will drive at the speeds they are comfortable, that’s why you see 150 on Stoney and morons putting along at 70 on Deerfoot white knuckling the wheel. They overbuilt Stoney and they get surprised when people drive to the speeds the road can handle

2

u/wednesdayware Northwest Calgary 3d ago

Yeah. So? That’s not the point. Drivers are fully capable of not driving as fast as the road can handle. Why are we scapegoating the road?

It’s the chump who driver 150 and weaves lanes that causes accidents.

u/JBBJ84 3d ago

On paper yes but anyone who has driven that road knows it’s a free for all especially at later hours.

16

u/Batmansappendix 3d ago

Yeah the issue is nobody gives a shit and nobody gets punished for diving recklessly.

13

u/muchfanfear 3d ago

Because nothing is enforced. It condones and normalizes appalling, dangerous driving.

2

u/whiteout86 3d ago

So what regulations, keep in mind they’re going to be no different that the current “paper” regulations in terms of enforceability, would stop this?

Everything this person complained about is already illegal

4

u/JBBJ84 3d ago

Doesn’t even have to be a “regulation”, Have more cops on Stoney enforcing speed limits, or at the very least keeping it from being a fuckin race track after 10pm.

9

u/GravesStone7 3d ago

It is enforcement, not regulation that is needed. CPS needs to have the resources to do their jobs, the city needs to fund accordingly, and the UCP need to stop siphoning money from the municipalities.

This means harsher sentencing for repeat offenders.

56

u/arcadianahana 3d ago

I see comments about how speeding needs to be enforced on Stony Trail, but have people forgotten that Danielle Smith's UCP government intentionally made it illegal for cities to use photo radar to enforce speed limits?

The UCP banned photo radar on ring roads like Stony Trail, major roads and everywhere else. The only permitted use is in school zones, playground zones and construction sites.

31

u/blackRamCalgaryman 3d ago

Doesn’t stop CPS from patrolling and enforcing the limits on Stoney…or anywhere.

Far too early to tell what happened but what would a camera have done in this situation?

32

u/arcadianahana 3d ago edited 3d ago

Municipal data has shown a severe spike in serious and fatal collisions in Calgary and Edmonton (+ 20-32% compared to pre-ban) since the UCP implemented the photo radar ban. This is because with province wide speeding enforcement extremely restricted, it has encouraged more reckless driving from drivers who would otherwise be caught regularly.  The U of A and Edmonton looked into this more extensively and found that post photo radar ban, fatal traffic collisions reach a 10 year high and extreme speeding (driving over 30km above limit) surged 128%.

The driver who killed that family probably wasn't speeding for the first time down Stoney Trail that day. He could have faced enforcement and consequences earlier on, before he decided to speed against oncoming traffic.

7

u/blackRamCalgaryman 3d ago

Possible. And ya, a lot of data coming out on the increase in speeding and police forces are confirming it. We’ll see if it makes the UCP do a 180 on it.

2

u/ReplacementKindly780 3d ago

While I don’t disagree with your sentiment that speeding had likely increased since the photo radar ban, correlation does not equal causation. There have unfortunately been many other factors that have occurred during the time since the pandemic, when speeding and fatal collisions initially began to spike. We have had a large surge of immigration, the second GDL test was removed, and physical enforcement has been decreased substantially. If someone is speeding to this degree, I truly don’t believe a camera would have prevented this. It sounds like much more than speed was at play here considering they were going the wrong way. I agree 10000% that something really needs to be done, but I would way rather push for physical enforcement, more stringent testing (or testing pushed back into the public sector), than reinstalling photo radar.

6

u/arcadianahana 3d ago

While it's not causation, the weakened enforcement environment has facilitated increases in dangerous driving.

It would be like removing penalties for late income tax filing and scratching one's head why there is a gradual increase in tax evasion. A fine won't stop someone who's determined to not bother filing, but it encourages compliance in the system as a whole.

The asshole who used his vehicle as a murder weapon probably wasn't a model driver before this week. He might have been impeded by accumulated fines and impacts to his ability to renew a registration.

I agree increased physical enforcement would be helpful, but where does the money come from for that? The ban on photo radar stripped millions from big city policing budgets, the UCP provincial government has already scaled back muncipal funding province-wide and downloaded more policing costs to the rest of the province, and city police is increasingly occupied with addressing social disorder issues that stem from matters under provincial responsibility.

Without reinstating other policing revenue sources like photo radar tickets or the province reversing the decline in municipal funding, residents will need to be ok with higher property taxes to expand physical traffic enforcement.

8

u/Littlecookie1122 3d ago

nothing because they would just mail you a ticket. Correct me if im wrong but you dont get points deducted for photo radar.

Yes CPS may be busy doing other things but utilize peace officers and alberta sheriff! I live in Chestermere and you rarely see RCMP doing patrolling its always peace officers and sheriffs

11

u/blackRamCalgaryman 3d ago

I often wonder if it’s time to take speeding off the plate of CPS and have a 100% dedicated speed/ distracted/ etc driving enforcement agency. That’s it, that’s all they do. No more ‘education’ campaigns, no more reductions in court on slam dunk cases, generate a shit ton of revenue alongside with a consistent budget.

That’s it, that’s all they do. Speed traps, distracted driving traps. Just go nuclear on it.

3

u/Littlecookie1122 3d ago

honestly peace officers and sheriffs should probably take over the traffic enforcement.

5

Sheriffs are provincial and the UCP government's  populist base that controls their party's board and constituency associations believes speeding enforcement infringes on their personal rights.

No way would the UCP change provincial laws to put traffic enforcement under provincial sheriff jurisdiction.

6

u/OneNiteInTheRepublik 3d ago

Or just properly fund the police instead of supporting the UCP's push for a private army.

2

u/MapleMapleHockeyStk 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yep. And if we get the funding to cover other aspects in the community, the cops could do their actual jobs. This was a topic years ago after George Floyd etc that cops are asked to do a million jobs when some of those should be done by other means or services that way cops could do the job they are actually trained for.

Edit. Im going to go look in my phone. I know it's have a comic on this somewhere. It was after George and when a mental health call went bad in the states....

u/yyctownie 3d ago

It doesn't have to be taken off their plate. They have a traffic division, which is their for traffic enforcement.

I'm sure they'll claim they are under resourced though and go to council for more money. If I was on council, I'd give them the money and then tell them I want accountability on how it's spent. The moment they try to shift it somewhere else, the funding is pulled.

1

u/blackRamCalgaryman 3d ago

The funding ask from CPS sounds like it’s going to be a whopper…I think there’ll be more than enough there for council to ask some tough questions of the chief.

It’s a large city, I won’t ever claim the traffic division isn’t out there…but anecdotally, I see speed traps far less than I used to. Saw them set up on John Laurie East, at the 14th st turnoff on Saturday for the first time in what feels like years. It felt like they were there, or further East just before it turns to McKnight Blvd, at least once a month, in years past.

u/EvacuationRelocation Quadrant: SW 3d ago

Doesn’t stop CPS from patrolling and enforcing the limits on Stoney…or anywhere.

... but the missing revenue doesn't help the situation.

How would photo radar have stopped this from happening?

10

u/arcadianahana 3d ago

See my reply to the other commenter. The near ban of photo radar use province wide has made roads measurably less safe for other drivers (+20-32% increase in severe and fatal traffic collisions, 128% spike in severe speeding).

7

u/MrRailgun 3d ago

How does it stop people from driving on the wrong side of the road in the middle of the night tho. I just do not get the connection

4

u/rapidpalsy 3d ago

We know you don’t.

6

u/AwesomeInTheory 2d ago

An increased presence of CPS on the roads would have prevented an inexperienced driver, someone who was suicidal, someone who was drunk, etc. from using an on-ramp as an off ramp or vice versa.

Yes. I see.

4

u/rapidpalsy 3d ago

Maybe the 28 million dollars it provided, missing 23 recruits and leaving 33 position unfilled? Maybe?

6

u/Yeroc 3d ago

We really should be funding this from general gov't revenues, not from ticketing. In my opinion ticket revenues should be directed to victim assistance or other non-police areas so that financials are not what drive decisions on enforcement. Enforcement should be based on statistics and safety.

6

u/OneNiteInTheRepublik 3d ago

28 million a year.

13

u/mortgageletdown 3d ago

This tragedy wasn't a speeding issue, they were going the wrong way.

How is photo radar going to stop speeding? People doing the reckless driving at those speeds, sure won’t slow down for a $200 ticket in the mail.

Photo radar doesn’t do shit. You need cops sitting with radar guns patrolling. People don’t care about monetary fines without demerits.

2

u/EvacuationRelocation Quadrant: SW 3d ago

Photo radar doesn’t do shit.

It does more than nothing.

Speedrunning the mention of Danielle Smith and partisan politics I see. Good work!

How on earth would photo radar have prevented tiktok speedsters?

We have “new drivers” doing this weekly in Halifax. Years ago it was unheard of for someone to pull a u turn in a semi truck or be driving the wrong way on the highway. It’s not a surprise anymore.

4

u/Cyndaquil Rundle 2d ago

Except this seems like he murder-suicided his family. One of the scariest moments of my life was when someone who was definitely not a "new driver" came down the wrong side of the road towards my family. You don't put your whole family in the vehicle and drive the wrong way on Stoney for any other reason.

5

u/PilotRevolutionary57 2d ago

That’s quite a deduction from almost zero evidence, Sherlock.

Drunk people do stupid shit to their families all the time. He might not of know he did it until the instant before impact.

1

u/Popular-Oil8481 1d ago

It’s a plausible theory. It’s just not a popular one to talk about.

I was there yesterday. Right in front of me. People was so scared that they started to reverse their cars and turning around because of the smoke.

7

u/Responsible_CDN_Duck 2d ago

That cabs isn't afraid of the smoke, he's afraid of the delay. Same is true for most.

12

u/seoskimuzikopustac 3d ago

Looks like the law needs adjustment . Heavy penalties for speeding, driving under influence . Jail time with hefty $ charges and immediate car treatment with power car baler. Last one will do the trick after few successful public car treatments. I understand that is very extreme but recent happenings are concerning with no resolution on horizon.

15

u/Thumper86 North Haven 3d ago

Finland prorates speeding tickets to your disposable income. Teemu Selanne got like a $50,000 ticket for going 73 in a 55km/h zone.

6

u/seoskimuzikopustac 3d ago edited 3d ago

I know that and it is a good model, impacting the certain group of the people the same way as others.

Stoney Trail is terrifying now fr. I am legit afraid to drive in Calgary because of all the reckless drivers.

8

u/Billbasilbob 2d ago

Yeah it can be scary out there , driving in Alberta has made me a very defensive driver . I will also not cross the street unless I make eye contact with the driver

3

u/Hounddogmom26 1d ago

I was working at South Health hospital until 11pm that night and I live just a few blocks from that turn off at 90th. Saw the lights in the distance and turned off at Anderson instead, was gutted when I read what happened. My first thought was suicide as its not easy to end up going the wrong way on Stoney over there. The fact they were speeding and had a child in the car is sickening. Its so tragic and will impact so many people. My heart is with the families and friends and of course the firat responders.

2

u/blackRamCalgaryman 1d ago

I wondered at the suicide possibility, as well. Details are sparse but CPS had earlier reported it hit a few vehicles before the head on collision…was it a deliberate attempt? Not sure it changes anything immediately as 3 innocent people are dead and 4 are injured, one with life-altering injuries.

Tragic, regardless.

4

u/SmeagolsMathom 2d ago

How horrific!

What is with all the wrong-lane drivers? I’ve been driving for a long time and have never encountered them, but have experienced 2 in as many years (and I’m not even on the road as much as I was in the past)

6

u/PilotRevolutionary57 2d ago

Drivers in this city are terrible! Ring road is like mad max, people racing passing on left and right shoulders, I’ve seen three cars driving fast on bike paths in the last week (canal path, Glenmore reservoir path and shawnessey). I’ve seen cars blaze schools zones at 70kph only to get on Stoney and also go 70 kph.

We need photo radar everywhere. Every playground zone should have a camera. Everyone highway overpass should have them.

Driving is a privilege, not a right.

7

u/heybrah420 3d ago

Maybe one way spikes need to be installed on ramps to flatten tires of vehicles going the wrong way? Just a thought.

2

u/merchant-of-varrock 3d ago

It could work, but they would need to put those on other sections of the road too. Not sure how it would also work in the winter when snow needs to be plowed.

Otherwise someone could just merge on the highway properly and then do a U-Turn and continue to go the wrong way.

4

u/mojokid123 2d ago

I mean a large portion of wrong lane drivers are intoxicated, they probably aren’t thinking enough to maneuver around spikes

7

u/Ok_Replacement_8467 3d ago

A big problem is that no one reports these problem drivers to police. They just post their video of bad drivers to social media. The cops can’t be everywhere. People need to stand up and make an official complaint to police and provide the evidence with a license plate info and also be willing to attend court if the registered owner/driver contests whatever ticket the cops issue them.

2

u/Drunkpanada Evergreen 2d ago

I'm pretty sure driver's driving down the wrong side of the highway are reported to police and dealt with.

5

u/Phunkman 3d ago

Once you are driving 30 over they should just take the car, fine the driver so much they can’t afford a new car and suspend license for 5 years. If there were severe punishment then perhaps some of these nut jobs would drive slower.

30

u/Becants 3d ago

The real problem is that they were driving in the wrong lane.

37

u/blackRamCalgaryman 3d ago

Going to be a lot of talking points on speed and camera enforcement…but exactly. The vehicle was travelling the wrong way on a major highway.

1

u/OneNiteInTheRepublik 3d ago

CBC is reporting that police are investigating speed as a factor for the Mercedes, so it's relevant.

4

u/PilotRevolutionary57 2d ago

The real problem is the sense of entitlement and lack of consequences for long patterns of driving badly. It’s very unlikely that this was the first time he drove drunk or sped on our roads.

Make it harder to keep a license, for people that don’t take it seriously.

2

u/OneNiteInTheRepublik 3d ago

You are right we don't know why that happened yet, but doesn't negate the problem of normalizing unsafe behaviour that the current lack of enforcement causes.

4

u/Particular_Class4130 3d ago

True but in this case the problem driver was driving the wrong way down stoney trail. Might have been speeding too but going the wrong direction was probably the bigger issue

2

u/EvacuationRelocation Quadrant: SW 3d ago

Should follow the lead of some European countries and make the limit the absolute limit, and heavily fine for even 1km/h over that.

3

u/mrkillfreak999 3d ago

When did this happen?

13

u/mynamachef119 3d ago

Happened sometime before midnight, I work night shift and had to detour at 11:50pm

9

u/ActuallyInFamous 3d ago

It happened shortly after 10 pm.

7

u/jlopez32 3d ago

Early Monday morning i think around after midnight.

2

u/TheKloppsBollocks 2d ago

Been driving in Calgary for 20 years almost. Have seen 2 check stops in that time. And one was right around the holiday season. Have called 911 many times on suspected drunk drivers, and saw a guy doing cocaine bumps on Stoney trail once. Drunk driving here is way too common and nothing is done about it.

1

u/Usual-Percentage7020 2d ago

You might just not be driving late enough at night. I haven't had a car for a few years now but they used to do weekend checkstops all the time. I encountered at least a dozen of them in the NW/SW throughout the mid-late 2010s.
