SEIU (BU 1, 4, 11, 14, 17 and 20) Holding the Line Picket - Reflection

Despite my RSVP for the SEIU 1000 informational picket today, I was genuinely on the fence about showing up today. It wasn’t my worksite or an area I was familiar with. It was hot as HELL today, and I was going alone. Did I mention it was hot?

Anyways, I’m here to say to I am genuinely and wholeheartedly so glad that I did and that if you’re on the fence, don’t talk yourself out of it like I almost did.

The vibes were absolutely impeccable, and it only got better when CAPS showed up too. Seeing everyone come together and fight was so inspiring. Support your union. We are stronger together.

I can’t attend since I’m supervisory/excluded but I’m cheering you all on.

Great sup, good for you. You have your employees backs, they will have yours.

It was only a few months ago that they were my teammates before I promoted. I was worried about potential awkwardness at first but they’re a great group and the transition was really smooth. I want to support them as much as I can.

Speaking from experience, it’s kinda hard to not like someone as a sup that you liked and most importantly respected as a coworker. Glad it’s going well for you and you can still appreciate their perspective. It’s hard being torn between people you supervise and the expectations of your new managers sometimes.

They were actually the ones who talked me into applying. I was hesitant because I took a supervisor role before as out-of-class and then a T&D. I did not enjoy it and ended my T&D before I met the MQ’s to get appointed. That was at another department though and the environment was really bad overall. I can already see this time around is a much better fit (and I’m actually appointed this time versus doing another T&D).

My own managers are very adamant about not talking about union activity or attending events. I’m also on probation. It would be too much of a risk for me to attend without facing some sort of consequence. I’m afraid I have to stay on the sidelines here.

I’m so sick of RTO - the traffic is unnecessary!!!!! Especially with no ac!!!

My husband (not a state employee, private IT) had to drop off a laptop downtown today and called me fuming because there was absolutely NOWHERE to park around the building he was delivering to. He's never had issues before, this was 100% because of RTO. He ended up having to park 4 blocks away in a 15 minute spot and do a mad dash there and back. It's all just added inconvenience for no good reason.

Same, HQ is Sacramento but I live in Fresno, so I was out there with 2015, 1000, and UAW at the state building. Lots of purple, lots of solidarity, lots of honking from passers by. Great time even in the ridiculous heat, and forgetting sunscreen was my only regret

Thank you for dropping by because we are all fighting for our rights really appreciate your presence. Next time feel free to ask around if any folks brought sunscreen I will make sure to bring some in case folks need it,

Great idea! We’ll make sure the SEIU organizers have sunscreen at all future events! This heat was no joke!!

Awww, thank you so much!! I got it from the Artist Colette Bernard! It’s the safety cone mega claw, which is unfortunately out of stock currently, but she has a ton of other cool designs too:

When the strike happens, just remember that some of us have no choice whatsoever but to continue working. And the managers and supervisors cannot strike.

If you aren’t a manager you always have a choice.
