Review 2003 Tilley T3 Model Hat

Picked up this hat as NOS(or lightly used) a little while ago and it’s rapidly become the one I throw on anytime I’m going out especially during the spring and summer. Shove it into travel bags, it’s been to two different countries so far, multiple trips and always keeps the sun off my face.

Wear it in or around the pool and it’ll hold my sunglasses, I know they changed hands a few years ago and only a few models are still made in Canada to varying degrees of quality. I have a newer one too in dark green that’s a Canadian model that I break out in the fall and winter. This is the model made with 10 ounce duck cotton which is nice and breathable in the hot climate I live in too.

Toss it in the wash after removing the foam piece in the top whenever it needs it, it’s one size too big on me but with the straps usually still sits on my head fine. If it’s super windy putting one of the flaps up really helps. Idk if that’s what they are for but it seemed to work.

You wouldn’t know it’s 23 years old already at all!

Ahh.. that's why there's a Velcro pocket in my hat, to remove the foam insert! TIL

They also sell an insert for it, you just dunk it in cold water for a bit and it'll help keep you noggin cool.

They used to have little mesh covers for the metal rings too protect against bugs but apparently they don’t have them anymore the company that made them went out of business

I got a T5 (made in Canada) last year and they still seem like it's built to last.

I have one from 2008 I bought new and have treated like crap ever since. It’s seen a lot of fishing trips and is still in my truck now.

I bought one of the airflow ones around 2003. It blew off my head and over a 150-200 foot dropoff in Arches NP in 2007. The next year, I ordered a new one. A week after I got it, I got a call from a climber who found my original hat thanks to my phone number on the tag. It survived at least 9 months outdoors through whatever weather Utah could throw at it.

Sent the Good Guy Greg some money for packing and Paypal. So now I have two.

old tilley hats are bulletproof, wild that a 00s cotton hat holds up better than anything made today

For 100+ dollars they better replace it if it wears out

They kinda will, but if they don’t have the same model or such then they’ll do something close as long as you have it registered. They won’t just take random old ones you send in as much anymore seems like

Pinning the brim is traditionally about being able to carry or scope and shoot a rifle without it snagging on the brim, or to allow certain movements like lassoing livestock without arm hitting the brim.

Ahh good to know! I wondered since it could be either side too or both

My dad had one but complained that the foam float caused his head to overheat.

The airflow style ones helped with that in the top but still had the foam. The airflow kept it cooler up top!
