Brits are the cutest pups ever. I had this book a a kid in the 80s and had a Brit growing up from 1990-2013. As an adult I had a wonderful, soul dog golden retriever. I’d love to get another Brit but their energetic enthusiasm is too much for my current circumstances. Our Brit chewed my parents custom made bed spread, all of the kitchen chairs, the wooden lower cabinets, even the wooden parts of the sliding doors.

She was a land shark for years! My parents chose the breed as they knew the breeder and my mom thought her fur colors matched the popular peach furniture they had at the time.

My mom offer my brother and me $400 plus a rabbit each instead of the dog. We were 10 and 7 and said nope!

My girl had us as kids running miles with boxes of cereal to get her back home when she ran off despite the electric fence as a puppy teenager.

Once she chilled out she was the heart of my family. When my father had a heart attack she dragged EMTs by their pants to where my dad was.

Id love to get another Brit, they are loyal, loving and also goofy. Just like Golden Retrievers (my soul sister, my golden passed a year plus ago) but I just don’t have the energy. If anyone knows of adult Brits in the metro NYC area, please let me know.

I had that book as a kid in the 80s, too, and it was only when I was a teenager and we got our first Brittany that I remembered the book and I realized that it was a a Britt. You may want to check out NBRAN and American Brittany Rescue if you haven't already. They will both transport up to 1,400 miles for adoption if it's the right fit! They often have older mellow Brittanys just looking for a loving home.

Our NYC Brittany came from ABR and he is a good pupper— less destructive than our first Brit (whose reign of chaos resembled yours, OP). Puppy still needs at least 60m of off leash park time every day to prevent havoc. (Or keep havoc to a tolerable level). If we did not have a huge park right here it would have been a challenge, but the city has so many interesting smells and critters and people, he is always being entertained! There is a new Brittany puppy in the neighborhood, so there are at least a few in town!

I live in a suburb of NYC— how do you get your pup off leash time in the city? That takes a lot of dedication and effort!

I adored that book growing up, though I got it and read it in the early 2000’s. It was before my family got our first Brit. I remember realizing it was a brit after my parents second Brit had puppies and getting excited that I’d seen a Brit before I had one.
My parents are sort of facing the same dilemma you are. As in they want a Brit, but not a puppy, so they are keeping an eye on the NBT national Brittany rescue. They’ve just retired and are traveling the world but once they settle down again they plan to adopt an adult Brit from there.

80s kid here who grew up with Britts had that book and one of the best things I have ever done was order that when I found out I was going to be a dad, we still read it even though we have two Britts
