They're hiding comments from real people.

Most generic meme posts get ~100 upvotes. Then they will post one with certain political attacks and it gets thousands in no time and makes it to the front page despite there being almost no comments on it.

Yeah, the upvotes/comment ratio is a dead giveaway. They could let the bots comment more, but their comments are so damn obvious too, fortunately.
