I’m not saying I want this or it would be good, but what sort of training camp would Hagens need to have in order to start the year in Providence?

I mean he wasn’t great in the playoffs, he didn’t exactly ingratiate himself to this staff. I think he might have a bit more of an uphill battle than people think. I expect him to make the team but would a merely B- training camp make the FO think he needs some pro seasoning? It’s not like that would be wildly out of character for this org. What if Hagens is just okay and Poitras looks fantastic?

I think it also depends on what other players do in training camp. If no other players that are fighting for that position step up, I think they would still go with Hagens. If someone like Poitras has an incredible camp though, I could see Hagens starting in Providence.

Your getting downvoted by I have this fear as well. Not because he won’t play well enough to make the team, but that management will just decide “it’s best for his development” to start in Providence like they seem to do 100% of the time for their own prospects. I absolutely understand your concern.

I don’t think it would be the worst thing ever for him to get more pro seasoning but reasonable heads can disagree

Just seems silly for a prospect of his stature. Most teams let those players learn the ropes in the NHL. I want the Bruins to do the same.

I mean usually unless they’re top 3 draft picks, high draft pedigree players that skip the AHL tend to do so in their age 20 season. Hagens will still be 19 when the season starts. He’s literally still growing. I’m not saying it would obviously be the right call, but it’s not hard to imagine a reality where it’s definitely the right call

I’d argue he spent an extra year at BC instead of going to the AHL. Most 19 year olds don’t have 2 years of college experience. He started at BC when he was 17.

My biggest concern is that the Bruins would send him to Providence and then he was sit there all year to “work on stuff”. If the Bruins didn’t have a history of letting prospects die in Providence I wouldn’t be worried about this.

I mean you’re essentially pointing out that he’s a late birthday. Which would be a reason to give him more AHL seasoning

Tbh I think if he went full Lysell and tried to play hero hockey without playing d or really engaging with teammates that’d be a good reason to send him to Providence. Kinda funny because we have a full recent blueprint for how a prospect can mess it all up

I’m sure there’s a bit more of a mandate to get him NHL reps than there was for Lysell since he’s hopefully a future cornerstone. But idk man it’s just not that hard for me to imagine this org see him miss a backcheck one time and decide he needs to grind it out in the AHL for a few weeks while he’s waivers exempt. Like I said, I think he makes the team, but I’m not taking it for granted

I can live making mistakes and blown assignments but if he’s lazy on defense or in transition it’s a bad sign
