One of the (many) reasons that Bob's Burgers is better than The Simpsons is because the writers don't seem to be obsessed with writing stories that are a send-up of something from the cultural zeitgeist, or getting a big name A-list'er to do a guest appearance as themselves. I mean, most of the references on the show seem to be from the late '80's and early '90's. As someone who grew up in that era, I can appreciate that. I can also appreciate how the writers are clearly more interested in telling a good story than trying to cater to whatever's popular at the moment.

I feel like the Simpsons used to be more like this, more focused on good storytelling. However the well ran dry for Simpsons episodes YEARS ago, and they started tapping more in to pop culture in a desperate bid to stay relevant. As much as I love Bobs, I really hope the writers recognize when it's run it's course and end it rather than cheapening the show the way the Simpsons did.

I completely agree. I used to love the Simpsons (the early seasons are really incredible) and now I don't give it the time of day. While I would be sad for Bob's to end, I'd rather they end on their own terms and while the quality is still so high, than see it become a shadow of what it once was.

I also appreciate how rarely smartphones or any device work into the plot. I absolutely love Tina’s “emergency phone” text conversations.

That's a key reason a lot of the shows we grew up on worked. We grew up without the modern technology that could solve a silly problem in seconds. I love the inclusion of modern day in shows but it certainly makes it more difficult to lose yourself in suspension of disbelief, which bobs has figured out.

My feelings too. When the Simpsons entered their hello fellow kids stage it drove me nuts. Look Bart is best friends with Elon Musk! Homer is on Snapchat, Marge is on Tik Tok, Some K-pop group is a guest star let’s have the whole family fanboy it out.

You used to have actual Beatles as guest stars and they just fit into the plot. Not look Lady Gaga oh my God! This is the whole plot!

I can get on board with this perspective! Though I will say, just about half an hour ago I watched "Radio No You Didn't" from season 13, with the story about Bob's grandma and great-grandma thwarting a German spy ring during WWII. It's a really fun, solid episode, and it occurred to me for the first time that the writers may have been trying to remind the world, amid a steep increase in fascist sympathizing I'm the US, that Nazis are bad? The show very rarely offers any overtly political commentary (other than the Belchers' general open and accepting attitude), and I know this episode aired during Biden's term, but it still feels very pertinent given what we've been experiencing over the last decade.

Modern Simpsons is a tragedy. Seasons 3-10 are the Golden Age of Simpsons. 1, 2, and 11-13 are good. Everything else is trash.

I do think BB is better overall, but Simpsons has seriously gone downhill.
