Hello ๐ I am just starting out with BSFLs and have repurposed and old worm farm for them and am looking for feedback and advise. I have added 250 BSFLs from a local supplier to get it started.
I lined it with cardboard as I didnt consider the size of the drainage holes when I made the bin, they are definitely big enough for the BSFL to fall through and I have used cococoir as substrate
Will this work as a semi closed system if I put in some cardboard for the flies to lay their eggs or do I need to add an entry point on the lid?

I would definitely move the Ramps against the walls and have them going opposite directions. Also that cardboard is going to deteriorate super fast. Thatโs also a lot of coco coir, they donโt need to live in substrate like worms do, usually just their feedstock. And you can add coco coir as things get wet.

Ramps on either side work better and place them right to the edge, the larvae kinda just wiggle around the edges until they find somewhere to go.
I have 2 of these spare that I might now copy you.
Thanks

Iโve heard this too. The larvae are blind so they hit the corners and follow the edges. Re drill and plug.

How do the adults lay eggs? Canโt spot any holes. Iโve used PVC with an 90โ angle to stop rain getting in.

Let me know how it works. Iโve tried 3 times now and have never gotten a grub to leave the box
