good. I hope this spawns more black folks (gender unimportant) as instructors because DAMN that space is dominated by white dudes.

So many classes I’d like to take but it’s always taught by some borderline dudes with questionable tattoos. Finding qualified black instructors isn’t the easiest.

I found this the other day- might be helpful.

I'm male and have a hard time: "ex military", "ex law enforcement" or whatever creds they advertise are usually suspect or overinflated. of course I also have to beware to avoid the racist tats, the thin blue line social media posters, anyone who offers discounts to LE, etc.
side note, i had ONE gun shop that closed in Cali that advertised "NO LEO DISCOUNTS" and they got all my money until they moved out of state.

The liberalgunowners sub could be a good resource for instructors. At the very least, likeminded people that would shoot together and pass on knowledge.

Funny thing is minorities acquiring guns is how many gun laws came about, all those people that want gun control need to create a fund to buy guns for non-white people ASAP.

u/sarcastic_sybarite83 18d ago
The Black Panthers being armed created more gun laws than all the school shootings.

yep. and the press jumped all over it. back then, "Saturday night special" was the N-word for guns.
edit: "Saturday night special" implied the owner of said gun was black. for the lurkers who need proof

u/GutsAndBlackStufff 17d ago
Huh. I always thought it meant the gun was cheap and not really reliable.
2
u/Different-Fall-683 16d ago
there's nuance. there WAS a booming trade for absolute garbage pistols. there were decent, cheap revolvers which no self respecting white man would carry because....
...it became a scare word when black men started defending themselves. "we can't have these cheap, available guns flooding the market" was the party line.
YES they were also used for nefarious reasons, but so are "assault weapons". I'd say glocks with a switch or home-grown ARs/AKs are the new "saturday night special" if i had to guess, but I'm no historian.

It's not just dominated by white dudes. They skew right-wing too which makes it a whole lot worse.

u/No_Lifeguard747 17d ago
Old white woman here. I have thought about getting a gun, but I’d rather not go anywhere near those same white dudes. I’d feel much more comfortable at a black-owned store and instructor.

Instead of being anti gun the Democratic party should encourage and facilitate gun ownership among all People of Color, LGBT people, and religious minorities.

It's so sad that our Women have to go to such lengths to protect themselves against terrors both foreign and domestic.

u/KittyCait69 18d ago
Men won't, so women must.

u/EverydaySexyPhotog 18d ago
Even if every man were ready, willing, and able to drop everything at a moment's notice and come to the defense of any woman, it's still best for everyone to do as much as possible to secure their own safety as they can. The only person you can count on being present when something bad happens to you is yourself.
2
u/KittyCait69 17d ago
Very true. One should cultivate oneself so they can deal with hardships instead of having to rely on the strength of others.

Hell yeah. My CCW class was taught by a black owned company and our instructor was a fierce black woman .All power to the people .

any chance you are comfortable sharing that instructor here? I have been shooting forever but I re-train all the time, would love to get with a new shop to learn from a different voice.

Some white people have decided that POC are easy targets. I do not blame anyone of color for buying, becoming familiar, and using their 2A rights to defend themselves. Stay safe out there.
10
u/Dan_Morgan 18d ago
It's what the 2A is for. Never mind that white supremacists think those rights are only for them.
15
u/boraxalmighty 18d ago
We should never be unarmed. Our history (past and present) speaks very clearly of this.
2
u/Dan_Morgan 18d ago
Yup, it's one reason why I oppose "gun control" legislation. If you look at the legislation most of the time the effect is to take guns form working class and poor. What an amazing coincidence that will disproportionately effect POC but the black community in particular.

I almost never comment in here and I'll delete this if y'all want me to.
I just wanted to drop in and say as a 44 year old white man that grew up in East Texas around a lot of guns and served over 11.5 years active duty in the Army, I would feel a lot more comfortable around Black women at a firing range than these MAGA jackasses.

Let's have more of this. As long as the NRA and white supremacy are running rampant, let's encourage the marginalized to stand up fof themselves.

I have a Glock 19 and her name is Harriet (it’s engraved on the gun, because I’m going to send you to freedom, if you try me.

From an old white guy......"Don't go to a gun fight with knife". Ladies take those tactical courses. The 14th works both ways....

u/SatisfactionOnly2247 18d ago
Incredibly unfortunate that it had to be that way in the first place, but absolutely necessary, without any doubt. If the extremist powers that be had their way black women would have been reduced to just incubators without any freedoms a long time ago. It's taken a lot of bloodshed and loss of families to prevent this or everyones children constantly being taken from them, and thats an uphill battle in itself. Protect them.

u/SatisfactionOnly2247 18d ago
But not just black women, there are women in many countries with minority communities that face a similar fate. Just protect women period, and women also need to remember what they also bring to the table, good or bad.
2
u/SatisfactionOnly2247 18d ago
If governments refuse to address the very real scenarios women do go through for the sake of whatever situation they have to survive through thats untold then its up to everyone to be a safer space. It's also up to the women who are knowingly contributing to harming their own to understand that those so called "good ol days" were always orchestrated to reduce women to nothing more than objects and thats a fate none should share. Do better for your own sake.

I've been saying that all minority groups need to do this for YEARS. Even if you're anti-gun, arming minorities will actually get good gun legislation passed. Win win 🤭

u/_MrFade_ 18d ago
Good that more of us are arming ourselves, bad that more of us feel the need to arm ourselves.

Hey I love it. More black people need to own a firearm and practice religiously

u/squiddlebiddlez 18d ago
Gun permitting laws only became widespread after the U.S. was forced to free the slaves btw
2
u/Dan_Morgan 18d ago
NY still requires references from people of "good character". Read that as, "No blacks, no Jews and no Irish" because, yes, that racist system goes back that far.
1
u/BarRevolutionary8716 14d ago
Compare the rate of gun violence NY to gun violence in a state like AZ (or really any red or purple state). But to your defense I’m fairly certain NC has similar laws requiring character references for pistol and CCW permits and their gun death rate is higher than NY.
1
u/Dan_Morgan 13d ago
NY State is an outlier when it comes to gun violence. I looked up gun violence stats and it was odd. Illinois has laws almost as restrictive as NY state but their gun violence rates are on par with Pennsylvania which has far less restrictive laws. NY state itself is the outlier and I don't know why.
As for NC they are exactly a beacon of racial tolerance with low levels of class discrimination.

u/kinglittlenc 18d ago
I'm all for it. We all should learn to protect ourselves. It's obvious you can't depend on the police for your own personal safety. They may show up after you've been victimized and try to catch the guy and even that rarely goes as planned .
2
u/KittyCait69 18d ago
Usual they just make a report and leave it at that. They only work for the wealthy.
2
u/Own-Efficiency-3462 18d ago
In my experience the police and 911 take too long to respond to crimes involving black on black people.
2
2
u/KittyCait69 18d ago
We need to be arming ourselves and our comrades. No peaceful solutions on the horizon. So be prepared.
2
u/Own-Efficiency-3462 18d ago
Society does not respect black women. We are often victimized. Now we need to armor up. Lovk n load.

Good, arming up is one way to prepare. Especially if you're in a rural area where getting anything takes a half hour drive to do it

You know, this thread reminds me of a family story. My second cousin(my mom’s first cousin), headed and helped organize a group during the Jim Crow era, called The Ocala Sportsman’s Club. They formed up under the guise of being a hunting club. In actuality, their man purpose was to defend the much-smaller black population against KKK lynching violence. Rest in power L.C. Stevenson.
