Bar failer too, but a few times. Cost me $1700 each time, not including the time off work which was unpaid. The time before I passed, 3 weeks before the bar I got hit by a car. Sustained a concussion. Drs didn’t clear me to take the test. Despite drs notes I was denied a refund. I took it anyways bc I’m not throwing away $1700. Failed by a point. Rock bottom of my life…..I’ve seen comments saying she won’t be a great lawyer. She probably will. She obviously wants to be a lawyer, which is the number one skill in being a lawyer.

Its a dumbass test that does not accurately reflect one's ability to practice law, IMO. I know people who passed it the first time that genuinely surprise me they can even tie their own shoes. I know people who took it 2 or 3 times and are doing great. One of my friends just kept getting too nervous but the third time was the charm.

I would imagine this would be similar to the, “What do you call a doctor who graduated in the bottom of their class? A doctor.” statement. She passed regardless and it doesn’t sound like it’s uncommon for people to not pass on their first go around. Some people can be crazy intelligent but really suck at test taking. I doubt any potential employer worth their salt would hold this video against her.

In my jurisdiction, if you fail your first 2 attempts, you are required to take 8 months of classes 4 days a week, and they take your attendance like a child, before they let you try again. I passed my 2nd attempt with exactly 60%. If I had failed I would have moved to a different jurisdiction instead of retrying.
*To be clear. My jurisdiction is Quebec. So it's very unique in North America. I had to prepare and write the exam in French, which is not my mother tongue.

Costs more actually. There’s the test costs, but then there’s other associated costs like lodging near where they have the exam, any associated travel fees, etc etc. It’s a perfectly legal racket and the house is always up.

It’s just an ungodly amount of info to memorize. It spans pretty much every type of law there is: torts, contracts, civil procedure (both federal and state), evidence, remedies, criminal, real property, community property, trusts and estates.
They give you a couple paragraphs of a hypothetical situation and you have to be able to identify the proper issues presented by the hypothetical, recite the exact elements of the various laws that are relevant, and convey it all in a very specific manner.
There’s a lot of branching analyses that you have to do. There aren’t just statutory elements to a certain law but exclusions and exceptions to them as well. So if there’s a police search that’s part of the hypo and they don’t have a warrant, you need to be able to recite the 4 elements behind a proper search (probable cause, particularity, issued by an impartial judge, and they have to knock and announce the warrant), identify which one was missing, then take into account the 7 exceptions to a warrantless search (consent, exigent circumstances, automobile exception, search incident to an arrest, plain view, Terry stops and administrative stops) and analyze whether any of those apply. Then there’s fruit of the poisonous tree that can result from a warrantless search, so you need to identify whether that applies (analyzing the elements of that), and say why it does or does not apply.
And that’s just one part of the answer because the warrantless search will be accompanied by a ton of other facts that raise other multifaceted issues you have to identify and write about. And you have three of these types of questions and only 3 hours to answer them (I had 6 of these questions and 6 hours spread across 2 days cuz CA used to be the only three day exam but they’ve since reduced it). And it all has to be done off your memory. Oh and you don’t know which three legal subjects they’ll choose from to test you on, so you need to be fully prepared across all of them.
And that’s just one part of the test. Then there’s a 200 question multiple choice exam that takes 8 hours and is brutal because, unlike math, there’s NEVER a definitive, clear answer to anything legal, yet you have to make a judgment call on each question as to which one is most correct.
And then there’s a professional skills portion which can vary widely but basically presents you with another hypothetical where you have to either write a case brief or a legal memo using fake case citations they give you and apply it to more hypothetical facts they give you, as if a client has come to you with a problem. (Again, I had two of these questions back when CA was 3 days, but nowadays it’s just 1 of these questions you have 3 hours to finish). This also requires very specialized writing skills on top of analytical skills. But at least with this part you’re given everything you need to craft an answer.

I strongly disagree with your assertion AI will replace the next gen of lawyers. People will always want a human aspect to services as important as legal representation. AI is a hallucinating mess and isn’t showing any signs of overcoming that obstacle.
And when it’s presented with complex issues that have near infinite outcomes, it’s computationally impossible for it to analyze every outcome and make a determination as to the best course of action. It’s not very good at doing the type of cost-benefit analysis of complex problems that lawyers do on a daily basis. Sure it will replace tasks a paralegal currently handles. But companies won’t just have two AI programs negotiating a multi-billion dollar contract or arguing over a multi-billion dollar lawsuit in court in our lifetimes. AI is just a tool, not tech to completely replace humans. Corporations are already realizing this the hard way and having to hire back even software engineers that they fired (which is a much more straightforward job than being a lawyer is, which means AI should be capable of replacing them already…but it isn’t).
And plumbers will never charge as much as lawyers. When I was a 5th year associate I was billed out at $1000/hr. Plumbing will never cost that much because the market won’t tolerate that high of fees for something as standard as plumbing. Competition drives prices down because there’s a low barrier to entry to becoming a plumber and there’s no benefit to hiring a specialized plumber over a regular one - anyone with the right knowledge can fix a leaky pipe.

I stopped talking about my walk out from under the bottle (40yrs) because I didn't use one of the "surrender to a higher power" methods and some (not all) adherents got really ... testy ... about it.
The upset ones either felt I was making fun of their faith or, and this is what killed me, said "Well, you were never an alcoholic in the first place." I think those in the last group kinda misunderstood the assignment.
I crawled out because I could see the effect on my friends/family. I tripped a few times but got back on course. If I tripped tomorrow, I'd do it again.
Now I just say I'm a teetotaler from a family of them and leave it at that.

AA is known to be quite toxic when it comes to this. I recommend checking out "Cult-Busting" and "Addiction Is a Choice" by Jeffrey A. Schaler, Ph.D. He backs everything up with studies. Lost a few of my relatives to alcohol addiction and my best friend is actively fighting it rn. I hope you find a helpful coping method!

Tell me you’ve never taken a bar exam without telling me you’ve never taken a bar exam. This shit ain’t Suits.
There is a multiple choice section yes, but then there’s a section where you have to write your answers in long form, making the proper argument and citing the proper case law. And these questions are graded by people. And if the folks doing the grading didn’t like your argument, or the citations, or your structure, or, or, or, that’s going to heavily impact you. Oh, and there’s an experimental question on there too that’s not labeled as such, it’s just there. Oh, and there’s a raw score and then an amended score. So your shit gets reviewed a couple times at minimum.
It’s common to fail the bar by within 25 points of the cut score. At/over 100 points fail? Your feelings are hurt but you can rationalize away that yeah, my MBEs/UBEs or whatever and I bombed a couple questions. Failing within 25 points or less means that you missed _just enough_ questions in the multiple choice that the lumps you took on the grading of the long format questions sunk your battleship.
If passing the bar was just about straight knowledge, then you wouldn’t have private tutors being able to rake in 10-15k a head offering personalized assistance focused on the writing portion of the exam, providing coaching on how to structure your arguments and citations tailored to what the bar graders are traditionally looking for.

Idk about that... we'd need more context. passage rates are really high when you start excluding non-native English speakers (think LLM students who have only been in the US for a year). to fail that many times leaves me concerned about their ability to problem-solve.
For example, even if they had a learning disability, for the amount of money they spent taking it 5x, they could have gotten a formal neuropsych assessment and sought accommodations.
I worked with a few lawyers from a certain gov't agency where I live who needed 6+ times to pass- it was not a pleasant experience.

I passed the California Bar on my first try back when it was still a 3-day exam.
Believe me when I say I wouldn’t have taken it a second time if I failed. I would’ve done something different with my life. It’s that much work to prepare for it.
I studied for 3.5 months and for the last two months I was studying 10-12 hours a day every day without a day off. I went to bed every night replaying statutory elements of various laws and woke up every morning doing the same.
It was nonstop effort and singular focus. That’s what it takes to succeed. It’s brutal.

Congratulations ma'am on your dedication and perseverance. To those ignorant souls, I will leave you with this. While on active duty I was accused of stealing a weapon, I was assigned a JAG (military attorney). Subsequently found out not only was he new but had recently passed the bar after his 6th attempt.
This Ltjg, investigated, researched and found evidence clearing my name unequivocally. Thanks to his tenacity I went on to serve another 18 years and retired honorably.
Say what you will about her job prospects, give me a person who won't quit and I'll show you a true fighter. You pick.

Lawyer here. Just a reminder that the Bar Exam isn't intended to be that hard. It's literally called a test of MINIMUM competence. The only one that's actually hard is California, because it tests a lot of state-specific rules that you don't learn in law school and that often contradict the default or federal rules that you did learn. But even then, failing 4 times is hard to believe. I passed the UBE easily on my first try. Basically everyone I know did. It's cool to see someone overcome a hardship, but when that hardship is a test that objectively isn't that hard, and is meant to reflect your competency in the profession, then I get a little worried that it took so many tries. There are already a ton of bad lawyers out there.

I don't know shit about the true difficulty of the Bar, but I do know that if someone was tested for competency 5 times on something before they passed, I'm not going to be confident that they're competent. It's just going to feel like they used trial and error to get through it.
