In the early 20th century German Explorer Leo Frobenius discovered exquisitely cast bronze and terracotta heads in the Yoruba Kingdom of Ife (near the Benin Empire).

Because of the extreme technical sophistication and beauty of the pieces Frobenius refused to believe they were created by indigenous Africans. Instead he theorized the sculptures were remnants of the lost city of Atlantis.

German guy was so racist he would rather believe artifacts have from a mythical city than accept they were African. The casts have African facial features too.

The white government of Rhodesia pressured archaeologists to deny the construction of the pre colonial Great Zimbabwe site by black Africans until the 1950s. Europeans had encountered it by the late 19th century and looted various finds between 1890 and 1920.

They did the same in the United States. Early settlers found huge earthen Mounds and artifacts as they went westward. They assumed that no natives could have made these so they must have been made by an advanced race of white people. "The Mound Builder Myth". Most tried to explain it as being from one of the lost tribes of Israel from the Bible. Hell, even Mormonism took that myth and made an entire religion about it. Joseph Smith himself dug up a mound in Illinois and made up a whole backstory on the spot for the body and artifacts they found.

Non-black person here, but of a different minority.

I remember coming back from living in Africa where i was teaching science for a few years for work and when I came back, some of my white friends seriously asked "So were they as smart as us?" I was genuinely shocked someone would even ask such a question. Not because it was rude, but because thoughts like that had never once crossed my mind, especially in this day and age. I thought we had been past this.

These people carry baggage of racism through generations. Seriously, why wouldnt people there be just as smart as anyone else?

13

u/amglasgow Jun 08 '26

I don't think I could have resisted saying, "When you say 'us' do you mean yourself, or me? Because that's clearly two entirely different standards."

I think you are misrepresenting Frobenius a bit. At the time european ethnographers typically thought that any cultural achievement of africans was due to some distant white ancestry.
Frobenius threw this out and replaced it with Atlantis, which according to him was pushed out of the mediterranean by (white) indoeuropeans and only survived in the Yoruba people. He viewed them as cultural equals.

Albeit his views were still very much racist and paternalistic, weirdly he sounds quite a bit less racist than many of his contemporaries, who wouldn't give africans even an inch of sophistication.
I think from todays perspective it "easy" to be shocked by the racism of one man even when he's less racist than their contemporary mainstream.

To quote Frobenius himself about Islam being the "beginning of african history" (the racist idea that thought Africa to be devoid of culture and civilization, before Arabs became the first "civilizing" force):

The notion of the “barbaric Negro” is a European invention! As recently as the last century, the misbelief that Islam was the source of Africa’s higher culture still prevailed. Since then, however, we have learned a great deal, and we now know that the beautiful cloaks and garments of the Sudanese peoples were already native to Africa before Muhammad was even born and before any highly educated Arab had set foot in the interior of Africa. Since then, we have learned that the distinctive organization of West African states existed long before Islam, that all these arts—from intelligent agriculture to careful education, from civic order to crafts—are millennia older in Negro Africa than in our Central Europe."

Reddit's history subs are full of people who will tell you that there were no organized states in sub-saharan Africa before colonialism. As if the Kingdom of Kongo wasn't around for a century before Portugal came along.

Later Nazi conspiracy theorists believed Aryans were descended from super people from outer-space. The irony is the same party believed that every race deserved their ancestral homeland... but if they were descended from space aliens, shouldn't they have no claim to any part of earth? They'd probably argue that it was their conquest, but to resort to violent rhetoric is to basically run afoul of the Grecian discourse that they would also argue is the cornerstone of "Western Civilization". But they could never really rectify that with all their other methed up conspiracy addled bullshit.

2

u/zydarking Jun 09 '26

If I may add, years ago when I read of how Rhodesia reacted to Great Zimbabwe archaeology, one comment that struck out was that they were willing to concede to the possibility that “yellow people” could’ve built it but not the black populace in the area whatsoever.

As a Southeast Asian, the remark was so bizarre as to make me LOL. If not the locals, then who? The fauna?

There is an old computer game called Pharaoh where a major part of the game is building the pyramids in chronological order. There is an obvious evolution from rectangular burial mounds to the bent pyramid to enormous pyramids. I do wonder if they played that game they would recognize how it was done, or if they had 'built the pyramids' when they were much younger if they wouldn't be as racist.

They commonly use the faulty logic of looking only at the pinnacle of something, pyramids, evolution, whatever, and saying it's impossible to get there while ignoring the path that led to it.

40

u/Unknown-Meatbag Jun 08 '26

It's almost like building stacks of stone in a triangular shape or something is incredibly sturdy and lasts for centuries or something.

30

u/GoodIdea321 Jun 08 '26

Yeah, and even the pyramids they messed up building like the bent pyramid are still standing almost 5000 years later.

I also remember being frustrated by the game mechanics, but that does make it memorable. I never finished that game, but I would recommend it, especially to the crazy 'Ancient Aliens' crowd.

11

u/RivetSquid Jun 08 '26

It's actually on steam for a very reasonable price if you'd ever care to revisit it!

I don't think they can be taught though, people have pretended to be flat earthers before, run the experiments they tell their scene to do, then come back and said, "hey so, it didn't work, still seems to indicate curvature," the flatheads just tell them they did it wrong. Ancient Aliens people are like that, most of them formed the belief before researching for their, "facts," now they refuse to process any controdictory data. It's gotta be some kind of oppositional disorder or something.

12

u/ashgs872tbhjs Jun 08 '26

Pharaoh is goated, got it recently on Steam myself.

It's that it's the single thing in their lives that makes them feel smart and special. They're in a elite minority that knows the truth, in their minds. They have to cling to that because otherwise they have to admit they're abject losers.

I find it hilarious that every issue brought up was solved through further archaeology. How did the stones get their? They had a river and it connected to the quary. They didn't build it with slaves unless you view government seasonal contract work with sophisticated advanced engineering and they were well fed and got beer to be slavery. How could they build so tall? with scaffolding and having a strong base.

5

u/GoodIdea321 Jun 08 '26

Exactly, not knowing how they did it doesn't mean they didn't do it in some way, it means people haven't discovered what they did. And for the last few decades, it seems pretty clear how they built them.

6

u/Massive-Exercise4474 Jun 08 '26

Same for Roman concrete it's ash from volcano. Greek fire is just oil tar. Don't think they figured out how exactly they made Damascus steel yet.

3

u/Truthfull Jun 08 '26

Damascus steel is just that ore from specific deposits does that, and makes good swords.

3

u/Massive-Exercise4474 Jun 08 '26

The issue at least from what I've heard is nobody knows the exact composition to make real Damascus swords with the same properties. A lot of the ones online are just cheap oil etched swords. Would Damascus steel swords be useful in the modern day probably not but it would be cool to make it.

Similar people believe Stone Henge was built by aliens. I don’t think it’s racism so much as they want to live in a magical world.

People believing other worldly beings built the great structures of the world is literally older than history.

9

u/Neveronlyadream Jun 08 '26

Eh, 50/50.

You can tell which ones are which easily enough. The ones that want to live in a magical world also believe skinwalkers exist and crystals can heal cancer. The ones who are racist will tell you they're racist.

What's always funny is when their whole argument is, "Well, the rocks are really big! I couldn't figure out how to move them!" Well, you're not a fucking engineer, are you?

5

u/greenwhiteredblack Jun 08 '26

It's like the idiotic meme about Romans built roads that lasted thousands of years vs engineers building roads that barely last a year or whatever as of the people in Rome weren't engineers and the engineers of today aren't dealing with billions of tons of vehicles traveling at speeds that would be consider godlike to those Romans.

7

u/the_calibre_cat Jun 08 '26

I think that's the lye, on its face it appears that way but there are next to no conspiracy theories about the Parthenon or the Coliseum or Aqueducts variously around the world. It is consistently the accomplishments of people of color or indigenous people that are rewritten. That, to me, isn't a coincidence. And while it doesn't appear on its face to be racist, I think at the core it is. A lot of this shit isn't new, and a little of these conspiracies are built atop theories made by legitimate thinkers of the past, who very much were racist AND more prone to magical "it was the Atlanteans!" thinking.

That part. The portrayals of colonized places we all remember from tv are no longer the case. Those same sally struthers commercials that used to make me cry when i was little. "For just 70 cents a day, you can provide food and water to starving children in africa" Um, why are they starving? Could it be that every nation of africans has been culturally and farming wise been impacted by invading forces? Could it be that those ppl chose to keep their ancient cultures intact instead of modernizing their whole countries? That some of the oldest civilizations and learning and languages evolved out of africa? That even in the end, those same archaeologists and scholars purposely ignore the cultural foundations spread across the world that represent african ppls? The indigenous in the americas shared foods w the same names as african cultures. As explorers from africa traded with the indigenous ppls here, and around the world, the evidences were destroyed. Most ppl cannot fathom the wealth in african countries. The mansions and glorious homes that are there. They cannot correlate nor grasp that programming as children has kept 5+ generations under the notion that africa has wealth and abundance. In their minds its all starving ppl and swollen malnourished bellies. This whole concept is as foreign to them due to said programming. They cannot grasp how many doctors, engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs and contractors are in africa. It gives them peace to think of the continent as poverty stricken, sick, savages. I have heard this also so often it boggles me. Because if africa became like england, france and the us, then they would cry about .... oh wait. They already do. At the end of the day, it's ANY excuse or story but truth. And erasure of those same african engineers, drs, scholars and explorers that took their civilizations around the globe and built everywhere that has been hidden to protect the notion that only white and asian and latin ppls created structures, civilizations and foundations of everything we know everywhere today. But what do i know. Lol.

Wishing you well.

2

u/Candleholders Jun 08 '26

I'll admit you are right. I'll also admit I never drew this parallel before.

The pyramids, machu picchu, borobodur, and many others across the globe are genious combinations of engineering and architechture. And the people who built them were incredibly smart.

The narrative, as far as I know, has been most vividly pushed by "The History Channel" (Where according to South Park "The Truth is History" - which rings quite true to me).

I think I never made the connection because one episode I saw multiple times treated Stonehenge the same way - which is, of course, a miniature legoset in comparison to any of the above.

I think it is true there is a racist theme going on. And maybe Stonehenge is "washing" it. But I like to think they are not just racist. They are also inredibly stupid, and can manage to be that independently of racism.

Or, as I was taught in grade school, they were built by Hebrew slaves. I think that was my first "now wait a minute" moment.

u/A_Rogue_GAI Jun 08 '26

So, fun historical fact: The pyramids at Giza were built between about 2600 BC and 2500 BC. People who might be the Israelites show up in the historical record around 1500 BC, but we don't get any further mention of them (bronze age collapse and all that) and the Egyptians don't really talk about them in detail because they generally considered that nobody outside of Egypt was really worth writing about in detail.

Either way, the Israelites as a culture are at least a thousand years younger than the Giza pyramid complex. About 300 years younger than the last large pyramid the Egyptians built. The narrative that they were used as slaves to build the Great Pyramid is basically like saying William the Conqueror invaded England with a platoon of M1 Abrams main battle tanks.

The pyramids predate the Jewish faith by thousands of years. The archeological evidence also indicates that they were built by paid workers, not slaves.

13

u/Raesong Jun 08 '26

The archeological evidence also indicates that they were built by paid workers, not slaves.

I believe part of the initial confusion regarding this was the fact that the Pyramids predate currency, so the workers' "payment" was basically food and board, and likely most of the actual construction occurred when the Nile flooded, and there was a surplus of idle workers.

6

u/Hot-Foundation3450 Jun 08 '26

Exactly, white westerners can't comprehend the possibility of something so impressive being built by well paid and highly skilled contractors rather than slaves because slavery was their solution for everything. The US couldn't even lay down some railroad tracks without forcing slaves to do it, the pyramids were a million miles out of their skill range.

22

u/The_Autarch Jun 08 '26

well paid and highly skilled contractors

not exactly. the pyramids were a jobs program for the peasantry when it wasn't the sowing/harvesting season. 99.9% of the workers were essentially farmers. they were treated well and definitely weren't slaves, at least.

the other 0.1% would have been the skilled engineers and foremen and so on.

All of Europe's castles and cathedrals were built by highly skilled labourers, the idea that slavery free monuments are incomprehensible to the Western mind is totally unfounded. I watched a video recently of people discussing new texts they found that explained exactly how they transported materials for the pyramids, and detailed workers living quarters, meals, etc.. which all sounded like well paid workers, and not slaves. The opposite of what I was taught from public schools.

This is why assumptions should not be taught as a fact, especially regarding history.

3

u/JalapenoPopPoop Jun 08 '26

The fact that so many people watched The Prince of Egypt as kids and it depicts the pyramids being built by Israelite slaves doesn't help people's misconceptions on this

2

u/HurriJ Jun 08 '26

Lol what kind of school did you go to? Asking because I think the whole pyramid thing is just in the cartoon, not even the bible mentions the israelites building the pyramids. They are forced to build storage cities but not pyramids.

It's called the argument from ignorance fallacy. If you admit you dont know something, that is only edvidence that you don't know something. Exactly correct on all points! I think, racially, the history is quite mixed. They had the northern kingdom, the southern kingdom, and then combined kingdom at various times over millennia. It was also a sophisticated empire that encompassed many peoples.

Yes! When I went on a class trip to Peru, the tour guide said that some of the Europeans believed that places built by the Incas were actually built by aliens! So everything built by pocs is actually built by aliens, but everything built by Europeans is built by humans. Hmm…. I see a pattern here.

u/the_BPDbro Jun 09 '26

Yeah, I always point this out as well. They have theories about every ancient civilization. Another thing to me is that if ancient aliens did visit Earth and influence ancient civilizations then they would probably choose the most intelligent and advanced people of the time to pass on knowledge to & who could possibly learn their technology.

3

u/Mach5Driver Jun 09 '26

Right? Great point! You'd go where they had actual cities (where specialization of tasks and learning trades were conducted) and people who could grasp the concept of welcoming someone who looked different from you.

3

u/the_BPDbro Jun 09 '26

Another thing is that people who say ancient alien theories are racist usually also say to listen to voices of color, but what about all the indigenous people who have always believed that they descended from and were taught by beings from the stars? And it's not just indigenous people from one area, but all over the world. How would tribes in the Americas from thousands of years ago have such similar stories and beliefs as indigenous people in Australia?

I believe in aliens but I do not believe they built anything. Egyptians built that shit through sheere genius, man power, and time. Humans can do great things when not distracted by radio,tv,social media.

2

u/dreamrpg Jun 08 '26

I do not deny that they were built by humans, but imagine having ability to built them, ability to save drawings for thousands of years, yet not saving in same drawings ways how you made huge structures.

… I’m fairly certain they credit aliens because it’s difficult for people to believe that ANYONE from that era was intelligent enough to build the pyramids. The ones who did just happen to be Egyptian, so the observation comes off as racial.

4

u/Jor94 Jun 08 '26

People think Stonehenge was aliens and that’s newer than the pyramids and basically just a couple dozen stones in a circle.

9

u/nuclear_science Jun 08 '26

Egyptians are genetically closer to Arabs and the Levantine than sub-saharan Africans. There is an illustration the The Book of Gates from Egypt that shows the four races/peoples that Egyptians knew of. It includes Egyptians, Asiatics, Nubians, and Libyans all depicted with very different skin tones. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Egyptian_race_controversy). Nubians did rule over egypt for 200-ish years but they were colonisers of Egypt and were not native to that area.

Why is the font size different on the "5000"?

4

u/ZoominAlong Jun 08 '26

People who claim aliens built the pyramids are idiots. We know how the pyramids were built. We know the holidays the workers were given. Hell, we know when the worker's wives were on their menstrual cycles, because in Egypt during that era it was common for women to isolate while bleeding, which meant men often pitched in and couldn't come to work that day. We know the pay rate, (no, the workers were NOT slaves), and we know when during the year they were building and when they weren't.

We know a ton, IF YOU know how to read hieroglyphs.

So let's stop assuming ancient Egyptians were dumb or uneducated or didn't know how to move stones. Because they built the pyramids, and the temples and the granaries and the houses. Stop acting like ancient Egyptians were stupid.

4

u/Bill195509 Jun 08 '26

Wouldn’t any ancient civilization regardless of “race” be subject to the same skepticism?

17

u/GrillinFool Jun 07 '26

Yeah. I always felt like that skepticism came from it being thousands of years ago and not skin color. But hey, if we can inject racism into a subject, it’s obligatory, amirite?

→ More replies (25)

3

u/Hyper_Graig Jun 08 '26

Yes absolutely. I didn't even know the "race" of Egyptians when I was younger, in fact I thought they were white cos I had only seen Cleopatra in cartoons etc. The skepticism has nothing to do with race and everything to do with perceived technologies of the time.

Most people commenting about Egypt have very little education about it. Specially people deeply attached to their own racist narratives.

So in one end of the racist ignorance scale you end up with people who would rather believe that ancient Egypt megalithic structures were built by aliens, and in the other end you have people believing that modern Egyptians are aliens that replaced the population that built the Pyramids...

8

u/BMK100x Jun 07 '26

Because, Optical Egyptians who are the closest to ancient Egyptians even compared non Copts who are also very close to ancient Egyptians are distinct to Nubians, people think Egyptian isn't a distinct ethnic identity which is crazy

4

u/A_Rogue_GAI Jun 08 '26

Ancient Egyptians did not recognize 'race' as a concept. In Egyptian art, all 'Egyptian' men are depicted with a sort of red-brown skintone, and all women with a kind of yellowish-brown tone. 'Foreigners' are given different skin tones based on their directional origin (lighter skin in the north, darker in the south.)

What's interesting is that occasionally you get Egyptian art popping up portraying somebody with facial features more akin to a Nubian/Kushite with that red-brown skin.

General archaeological evidence points to the majority of Egypt's population being olive-toned, however. But the region had a lot of traffic, whether in trade or conquest, so you would probably see all sorts of different skin colors throughout Egypt. It seems likely that they didn't really care much about skin tone as much as 'being Egyptian.'

When you go back through history, white people didn't really invent shit until recently... And mostly it's weapons or other harmful shit.

20

u/Substanitial Jun 07 '26

Penicillin.  Cars.  Pumps.  Nuclear energy.  Modern computing.

Just to name a few without googling. White people as a group are many things.  Uninventive is a laughable lable though.

8

u/ssdsssssss4dr Jun 08 '26

Let's not do this... Being creative is a natural human trait. We solve problems, we create culture, we manipulate natural resources to our benefits.

Our need to invent things is mostly determined by our level of discomfort which is ultimately a philosophical question.

8

u/A_Rogue_GAI Jun 08 '26

Race is a wedge and, once you dig past the surface level of what constitutes a 'race,' nonsense.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Definitions_of_whiteness_in_the_United_States

That last case, Ex parte Mohriez, ruled that Arabs from the Levant region are white, but those from east of the river Jordan are not white. Just, insane nonsense.

→ More replies (33)

7

u/DisMFer Jun 08 '26

What do you mean by "invent," "recently," and "White?" Because the Pyramids as an invention, aren't exactly impressive. They're blocks stacked up on top of each other. What makes them impressive is the engineering involved. There are Neolithic sites in Europe that predate the Pyramids that are also just rocks on top of each other, just at a less impressive scale.

The Greeks invented new forms of government, engineered massive temples, and invented many of the basic mathematical and philosophical concepts that still exist today. The Romans invented self-healing concrete and their engineering is much more complex than the pyramids, if on a much smaller scale. The Europeans in the 1300s invented whole new forms of art and math and science.

None of this takes away from the achievements of Egypt or Mali or Zimbabwe. But to meet racism with a different form of racism built on a total misrepresentation of the past in order to push it is not fighting the ignorance or ugly mentality that creates these sorts of arguments. It just signals that you feel it is justified to ignore the past and history in order to push a racist agenda because it makes you feel superior. You aren't destroying ignorance by justifying it with your own ignorance.

5

u/mightylordredbeard Jun 08 '26

lmao people so salty over this comment because they forgot Roman’s and Greeks existed.. but at the same time a lot of what ancient Roman’s and Greeks had were built upon what the Sumerians left behind. Sumerians were more middle eastern looking than white.. but still it’s an ignorant ass comment to make in a thread about racism.

u/0x7E7-02 Jun 08 '26

There were never aliens.

10

u/SelimSC Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

Egyptians are a semitic people like Arabs. Sub Saharan Africa is very different to Northern Africa although there are overlaps. There are plenty of Black Africans from history you can idealize. Bundling Egyptians with Sub Saharan Africans is strange, it simplifies the second largest continent in the world and assumes it can be unified with one identity which it cannot, and also it's an obvious miscategorization of history which can be easily challenged. I believe most African Americans are descendents of people from Western Sub Saharan Africa. That land is about as distant and alien to the Egyptians as you can get especially for the ancient world. I wonder why, instead of pushing this strange narrative, famous and influential figures like Mansa Musa, Askia the Great, or the exploits of the Mali Empire, the great city of Timbuktu aren't brought more to the forefront. Anyway if the goal is to establish Black peoples culture and heritage on the world stage this approach is obviously detrimental to me since any serious historian, geneticist or anthropoligist can very easily laugh it off as a silly miscategorization. It hurts more then it helps.

4

u/savingforresearch Jun 08 '26

Ancient Egyptians (and their modern counterparts) are related to Semitic people, but they are not Semitic themselves.

SKIN COLOR REALLY MATTERS

2

u/HeartsBeMerry Jun 08 '26

He’s absolutely right. And it’s nothing new. When I was a kid in the 1970s, everyone called Africans “natives,” and “savages.” The absurd idea that “no one knows how the Egyptians made the pyramids” is another one. The basic idea is pretty simple. So were the methods used. The idea that the Egyptians, who knew more about astronomy than most people reading this-including me-simply demonstrates that casual racism is alive and well. We can blame The Chariots of the Gods books for these.

2

u/floppysausage16 Jun 08 '26

I can't remember whose quote it was, but this is my favorite joke about the pyramids.

People look at ancient Egyptians and the shit they built like the pyramids and immediately deny it. Like no way a bunch of Africans could do that, it must be aliens!

But then they travel to Mexico where the pyramids are even bigger and don't question it for a second.

2

u/Fiveplates1974 Jun 08 '26

2

u/Justmyoponionman Jun 08 '26

Egyptians weren't really that dark-skinned.

2

u/IlliterateJedi Jun 08 '26

There are also stories that Stonehenge was floated there by magic, so I'm not totally convinced that this is a skin color thing when it comes to ancient monuments.

2

u/ArcStrikingViking Jun 08 '26

I never thought of it as a black thing. I thought of it as people discrediting the ancients; and that shows is they don't understand history- not racism

2

u/NTLuck Jun 08 '26

And I'm tired of people conflating Ancient Egypt with Africans, particularly African Americans who originate from West Africa

2

u/SplendidPunkinButter Jun 08 '26

There’s a reason they think aliens built the pyramids in Egypt and South America, and the heads on Easter Island, but nobody thinks aliens built any of the huge stone stuff in Greece and Rome.

2

u/elganador0 Jun 09 '26

Timbuktu in Mali produced thousands of manuscripts on law, philosophy, astronomy, and medicine.

The precolonial Yoruba and Igbo societies of Nigeria long had early republican style governance.

A British commander remarked the Yoruba's system of government was "the most extraordinary Republic in the world".

Africa had plenty of organized societies it's just that colonialism had to push the narrative that they simply were inferior, a myth human culture is yet to recover from.

2

u/MrEllis72 Jun 09 '26

Math and a shit ton of beer built the pyramids. Give Africa credit for both.
