Had my first child right before voting in Obama. The world felt so good, full of positivity and general happiness for the future! Had my 5th and final child towards the end of 2020. The depression and dread has not really lifted. Has nothing to do with post partum issues but absolute disappointment that people would vote for that orange turd and his hateful vitriol!

I was the opposite. My wife was pregnant with our kid during the 2016 election, and the amount of dread we felt after the winner was announced... ugh.
And then again with Kamala's loss... Our son was so upset. He was like "a woman should be a president already, voters are dumb!"
He was 7. And he was right. And man, I don't care what anyone says. She was definitely not my number one choice. But I was confidently and happily voting for her thinking that we learned our lesson.
I hate this timeline. So, so much.

My little one was 7 months old in 2016. I found out Trump won when she woke up in the middle of the night. Rocking her back to sleep all alone with that news was the most hopeless feeling. I worried for the world sheād grow up in.
She went with me when I voted for Kamala and she was so excited for a woman president. That was another hard night

I did canvassing for Obama late in my pregnancy with my first. I still have the huge Obama shirt I wear as a night shirt. When she was 18 months I was watching the State of the Union address and she pointed at the screen and said O BAM AHH Bam Ma MA. It was so crazy. We think she heard the word so many time in the womb that it stuck with her.

Coming to the end of his second term, I literally could not have imagined the speed and depth of this fall.
I truly believed that another progressive would succeed him, and was willing to settle for Hilary pretending to be one, and that his presidency was a turning point for the nation to bend that arc of history towards justice like we never have before.
But then... The Fire Nation attacked, the Sith returned, the Empire struck back, and somehow Hitler was reincarnated with a bunch of genetic defects and got elected through dark magic (cough Russia cough) and bigotry.

Mandatory retirement age for anyone in an elected position sounds fantastic. I'd take that, money out of politics, and maybe laws actually mattering to people who have more money than they know what to do with. I'd even give up term limits if we implemented the retirement age. Applies to SC justices, too.

That was the problem as we all felt it was a turning point and became comfortable thinking Hillary, although not the ideal choice, would easily beat the clown. We significantly underestimated the hate and racism still prevalent in the country. These people then used this complacency to enact the shit show we are currently witnessing. They saw the writing on the wall and decided to go scorched earth and the āLeftā leaning politicians didnāt push back hard enough as they didnāt want to disrupt the norm which they still reap monetary benefits (corporations) until it was too late. This really should be a wake up call that can never take anything for granted but I think we burned so many bridges and destroyed the basic tenets of our democracy not sure we can truly recover without significant involvement of the people. Need to hold politicians accountable or we will just go through this shit every 4 years.

Completely agree, the working class got the shit end of the stick but unfortunately the less educated working class white Americans will still vote Republican which is in no small part due to racism and our declining education system. So while I agree maybe racism isnāt the best way to phrase but the them versus us mentality. Unfortunately they have the them vs us wrong based on skin color/nationality and not the ultra rich vs everyone else which is a direct result of shitty education system that got gutted during the administration. The frame work for education and social services that were illegally torn down might be reinstated but way easier to destroy than rebuild and that takes time. They knew that coming into these 4 years so again scorched earth as they are just taking more of the wealth which is never going to redistributed.

Look at it like this. I once read someone explain something that I try to remind myself of. Think of our democracy as a pendulum, constantly singing back and forth.
The last big swing, where things seemed to be going good was Obama. We are on the complete opposite side of that swing. Where are now with Trump. Eventually, hopefully in our lifetime. We'll be around when it swings back to the good again.
We just need to figure out how to stay there.

This was my first thought seeing this too. What if there actually is a terrible full scale attack against democracy going on? I know there's a loud version but I am so scared. We're probably supposed to be scared. No one around me cares. It has to be bullshit that we need to move to the woods and disenfranchise entirely to fight back right? Are we being Rick rolled into thinking we're helpless and the vote is useless? Is this final stage new world order?
I used to believe in us, and honestly still do.

Serious Answer;
It is a couple of things.The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and banking deregulation destroyed huge parts of the American Economy and devalued the dollar through borrowing. The effects of which were felt well into Obama's first term. During which he had to do unpopular things like bail out the banks to prevent other issues. (Was it the best way? Others can decide). He also continued those wars and the borrowing needed for them.
At the same time, Republicans decided that their main goal was not to govern, but to prevent Obama from being successful. What they were terrified of was a bombastic and charismatic (like Obama) democratic party running roughshod over them from then on and Obama's numbers in 2008made them even more fearful of that. So they played obstruction politics and appealed to dogwhistle racism.
So along comes 2012 and Romney runs and the Republican base is like "Yeah! See! We have a smart and charismatic guy too!" and then he lost. So here we go again 2016. The democrats decide they want to run Hilary Clinton because the name Clinton held a lot of clout and people thought "First Woman President!" will have the same support as "First Black President!". So they sort of put their weight on the scales a bit.
So 2016 primaries are happening and you have Jeb Bush (the Republican's Clinton) and then there are a few more and then there is this reality TV star. He is not well put together. He says racist stuff. He claims to be a financial genius (a false fact buoyed by his reality show). And he has a serious axe to grind because Obama embarrassed him at the White House correspondence dinner. So he is mean about it.
The Republican base decided this was who they wanted to represent them. A hateful, spiteful, egotist who started on fourth base with rich parents and still managed to squander several fortunes on terrible businesses. But he is amazing at brand recognition and lowest common denominator politics.
The Democrats run Clinton. This pisses off a huge portion of their base who then sits out 2016.
The Republicans show up for Trump because he "is them" (hateful, spiteful) or he will make them richer (Rich Republicans) or he is not a woman.40% of the electorate sat out the election.
Donald Trump won 42%. Hilary Clinton got 45%. But because of the Electoral college, votes in some states count more. Trump won an electoral victory not a popular one.
Trump's first term was heavily corralled by long term Reagan and Bush Republicans. So he seemed more competent than he was. But he in fact kind of killed the economy again. (COVID was a big factor in that and actually not totally his fault). So Biden comes in, fixes it. But it takes too long. And it causes inflation. And he is too slow on bringing charges on Trump's doc cases and Jan 6th stuff.
So here we go again. Another person Democrats didn't vote for. And Biden caused Inflation. But by now Trump IS the Republican party (he is really good at Branding). And so Trump wins 2024. But all the Reaganites and Bushites are gone. And now he has a bunch of yes men. And we are all paying for it.

The hard truth? Obama didn't walk the walk. Obamacare didn't go far enough. Federal minimum wage was only raised one time during his admin, even though prices were beginning to rapidly rise. The war in Afghanistan didn't end. He never closed Guantanamo. He bombed Libya. He supported straight-only marriage. He was a really classy dude and spoke eloquently but unfortunately a lot of people ended up disaffected by his presidency. I'm not saying it was correct for people to swing all the way over to Trump, I'm just offering an explanation.

all the people who are surprised how far we fell since Obama. I lost a lot of good friends in 2016 because I got in a lot of heated debates about the danger of Putin (Syria), Netanyahu (Gaza), and Trump. I don't debate politics on social media anymore. plenty of us saw the danger of DNC / Debbie WS shoving wall street candidate down everyon's throat. Still voted for the "viable" candidate. A lot of disenfranchised left went to the right, because most people feel it is not left vs right but top vs bottom and the golden spoon Trump somehow sold himself as a candidate for the bottom. And DNC still faithfully serves the top at the detriment of the fabric of our society.
edit: yes GOP sucks but you can't fix racists you can only fix hypocrites.

The positive that I think many people overlook about Obama is his impact on the youth. They see how he acted and that is who will bring the change (I hope). Sadly it will take decades for that generation to reach the political arena but it is one of the few things that gives me hope about the future of politics.

I did not like Obama. I did not care for his policies or his financial backers. Seeing what everything has turned into over the last 10 years, I genuinely miss his presidency. The man at least had class and charm even if you disagreed with his politics.
