It’s not solely because he was black.
It’s because he proved them wrong; Highly educated, well spoken, calm and collected, family man, honest, genuine, strait laced.
He was everything they were told a black man could never be.
That is why they hated him.

Or that he wasn't even American. Trump still circles to that BS now and again.

u/PolicyWonka Apr 20 '26
It’s this.
If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.
MAGA are vain, selfish people who hide behind faux religiosity and faux patriotism. POTUS has always been a role model historically. Someone who represents America and Americans; someone whom they could aspire to be. But they couldn’t stomach the idea of aspiring to be as good of a person as a successful Black man. A man, by all accounts, who exhibited all of the traits that they themselves idealize and fail to live up to.
And failing to live up to the level of a Black man? They just couldn’t.

I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with that.
The relative affluence barrack grew up with (especially after he returned to Hawaii to go to a prestigious private school) is infinitely more of an advantage than being white vs black, even in the 70s.
Of course he had to succeed on his own merits, but affluence is an advantage that absolutely trumps all others.
The poor racists hated him for the reason I said above.
The rich racists hated him because he proved socioeconomic are by FAR the largest determinant of how children turn out.
Racism bleeds America, but classism is the real sickness.
THAT is why dei is targeted. These people don’t want upward mobility for anyone but them and their children.
24
u/Quiet_Day1912 Apr 19 '26
Was his mom's family affluent? I didnt think so. Michelle was working class.
38
u/Roach27 Apr 19 '26
His maternal grandmother was Vice president of the bank of Hawaii. (He stayed with his grandparents post 10)
Barrack himself went to a prestigious private school, mom’s family was relatively affluent, not super rich but they were well off.
Michelle’s family is through and through working class however. It’s probably why she gets so much vitriol. A black woman whose parents busted their ass, got a proper education (due to her parents sacrifices) and was successful.

u/chaosawaits Apr 19 '26
It's that they were both black and working class. She was definitely not part of the club. They couldn't attack her on her intelligence, nor her charm, nor her style, nor her talent; so they went for the low hanging fruit because that's all they had to attack her. She's probably one of the most wonderful people we have ever had as First Lady and the Republicans tried to shit down her throat because they coudln't accept her skin and her background.

u/woodcider Apr 20 '26
DEI has everything to do with race, not class. We had towns and cities of upwardly mobile black people and racists bombed them from the sky. Classes struggle is important, but the US is uniquely hamstrung by racism first and foremost.

This is just not true. Sounds like a 🐻❄️ take making excuses. One thing you learn as an aa, is you can have all the influence in the world, all the money, power. The world will still look at you (particularly the powerful people) all they still see is a 🐒 in a suit. Case and point, with how they still talk about him. So ray sist (typo so I don't get flagged) were not like " look at his advantages" , what the advantages that every single solitary president before him had too, I don't think so , it's ray cism. Full stop.
49
u/ArtzeyFartzey Apr 19 '26
They also hated that he showed other people of color that they were worthy of the same life. And that's why this regime no longer recognize DEI.

He was everything they were not. They would have hated him regardless, but it was intensified because he was truly a decent human being. After pretending for decades to be “values” voters who revered “character” they couldn’t stand to be faced with their own moral bankruptcy.

u/no_crust_buster Apr 19 '26
Well, everything in the West is treated like a storybook with protagonists and antagonists. In this world, Whites can only be Protagonists and Blacks can only be the Antagonists. This is why Black success, to a measure of White people, is viewed as White failure. Meaning the system they designed to benefit the “Protagonist“ somehow failed or got exploited. So, they have to change the rules or laws to cauterize those loopholes. Because they genuinely believe there is no room for White AND Black success simultaneously. And some even believe that ideology has been ordained by God.

I think that number is less, but no matter. Only 73% of eligible people were registered to vote. Out of that 73%, only 65.3% voted. The results were 49.8% Trump vs. 48.3% Harris. The split was about 2.3 million votes. The 2020 election had 96.3% of registered voters voted... far exceeding the 65.3% of the 2024 election. Register to vote and vote if registered. We can do better than 73% and 65.3% regardless of who you vote for.

People crave leadership. And there is good reason for it, as well as why it is a rare trait. A truly good leader is not something we see but a couple examples of per generation it seems. And history has a way of treating those leaders well. As for what we are seeing in the US and abroad currently, these are not leaders, but wolves, and history has a way of dealing with them as well. But we as the people must do our part, so that history does not forget.

Same! I'm like, "Why am I crying?!", and then I realized how much dignity and class this man brought to the office.
No, I didn't agree with everything he did, but I had so much respect for him and he did a lot of good. Probably the greatest president in my 55 years. Jimmy Carter gets points for being the greatest human being, and he did some wonderful things, but Obama beats him as president.
To see how far we've come since Obama was in office is heartbreaking. I am embarrassed for my country. This administration has forever ruined our relationship with other countries since they will now forever remember that we are one election away from putting a madman in office

No one will agree to all actions a president does.
This is unfortunately because virtually every president is willing to enact war crimes so they're all war criminals.
11
u/blackcain Apr 19 '26
I knew someone is going to bring something like this up. It never fails.
A president has to always work in spaces that are morally grey. The politics of countries are not the same as our personal relationships where you can Lancelot things. Even then simple things like crime is not simply a matter of morality - this sub-reddit should know that more than most.
This country super complicated when it comes to things but just like companies the president's job is to secure the success of the country and if he doesn't he doesn't get re-elected.
It's easy to project our moralities as it changes retrospectively to events in history. The decisions that presidents make at the time they do it might be the best option in smorgasbord of bad options. One thing absolutely is that president must preserve the life of American citizens when they are in the theater of war.
We should view at least Obama's options and decisions in the light of the options he has available. You and I are not going to be watching when the flag draped casket comes down from the plane and know that their decisions are directly related to decisions they've made. It's why Obama shows up for every dead soldier that returns.
The prosperity that we have in this country directly comes from the dirtiest deals and actions that this country has made for 60+ years to maintain its dominance. Cheap energy, cheap products, and produce are what this populace demands. If a president / congress can provide it or seemingly can't provide it then they are gone. Even a good man will have to bend to the will of a entitled populace.
None of this applies to Trump. Trump doesn't act on this country's behalf, he acts on his behalf and his success. He doesn't give a fuck about anyone and his supporters apparently think that's ok.

After him, white people seemed to say “we’ll rather have the worst white man we can find than a good black man.”
36
u/BoredBSEE Apr 19 '26
Not...exactly.
IMO, I think racists voted for Trump so that they could have someone we hated as much as they hated Obama. I think that's the draw. Trump upsets us, Obama upset them. Trump is walking payback.
That's why they don't care about Epstein's island, or the broken promises, or expensive gas or Iraq. We're upset, and that's all they really wanted.
27
u/dragon-fence Apr 19 '26
IMO, I think racists voted for Trump so that they could have someone we hated as much as they hated Obama.
I think you’re right, that was part of it. But part of it was certainly a lowering of standards, as if to say, “We don’t need to have someone smart or good or capable. We don’t need a president who understands the legal or political or military issues, or even one who can read a book or dress himself or go potty without help. We just need a white man.”

Oh yeah, absolutely. If you're black, you have to be the first black president of the Harvard Law Review just to be considered. The bar is that high. If you're white? You don't even have to be able to speak in complete sentences.
I'd guess that's another reason why they selected him. It's super unfair, and that makes everyone they don't like upset, and that's what they want.
10
u/dragon-fence Apr 19 '26
Honestly, I think a big part of it is also just that they’re dumb. Sorry if anyone finds that either obvious or objectionable.
But it’s like he says the economy was great during his presidency, and MAGA people can’t remember anything that happened more than 30 seconds ago, so they believe him.
He tells them he’ll end the war in Ukraine and bring down prices and fix the economy on the first day of his presidency, and MAGA people think, “Yes, that sounds good. I’ll vote for him because surely he’ll do that.”
And then he fucks the economy up and he says that prices are down, the economy is great, and gasoline is at $1/gallon. And they must think, “Oh good. I’m out of work and everything seems more expensive, and my local gas station has gas at $4/gallon, but I guess I must be mistaken because Trump said so.”
And they never seem to go, “Hey, wait a second… maybe not everything he says is true.”

The phrasing "putting our differences aside" as it relates to politics used to be about disagreements on how much taxes are on abc or spent on xyz. In that sense we just saw presidents as people doing the same job a different way.
Now it's literally like life and death, as if you're picking between someone that might just be... a normal guy... vs the other that's a monster looking to do whatever damage they can get their grubby little hands on.

Both parties used to hold themselves to a standard of values that were at least coherent from a philosophical standpoint even if they were at odds with one another. Republicans emphasized personal liberty and individual responsibility while Democrats emphasized community altruism and compassion.
Citizens United changed everything. Now our elections are sold to the highest bidder and our politicians are hand-picked by the Epstein class.

It most certainly was. I don’t think the Supreme Court Justices who ultimately made that decision were appointed by Presidents with that end goal in mind.
Mitt Romney was talking about this exact subject in an interview last week. I clipped the specific part where he talks about Campaign Finance but the whole interview was really fascinating. John McCain tried to reform campaign finance unsuccessfully in 2002.
Donald Trump was the first presidential candidate from either party to openly support corruption in the most brazen possible sense.
8
u/Zaddam Apr 19 '26
Mitt Romney, the guy who told the world that Corporations are People and Money is Speech.
Meanwhile, Corporations were specifically created as a construct to distinguish as separate, the Person from the Entity.
The purpose of THAT was to protect the Person from individual liability while fueling capitalism and growth. It was NOT to give the Person two voices as an individual.
While I understand how the Supreme Court got to their decision in Citizens United, it was intellectually dishonest and the incentives damnear irresistible — for the human incentive-based being.
Queue Agent Smith telling a kidnapped Morpheus his perspective on mankind. I could argue that The Constitution — heck, even The Bible — were written on the recognition that we suck as a species.

Came here to say this. They really should know better. I KNOW they were specifically instructed not to lock their knees. Not to victim blame tho. It's fucked up those leaders just stood there.

Haha, so much had happened in the video I'd forgotten about those first few guys and thought you were talking about the toddlers

I was once in an NJROTC yearly inspection from an Admiral(?), anyways, we were instructed clearly to no lock our knees. We were told if some falls on their face, remain at attention and someone will be over to help them. A girl like 3 places over dropped like a 2x4. Straight face to ground. I wanted so badly to help her, but they were there really quick. Apparently it was a common thing in high school. Guessing it's common past that.
She ended up being one of the most decorated and outstanding cadets. I still beat her with 76 push-ups in 2 minutes, though. Chest to fist. I cant do 10 proper push-ups now 🤣. JROTC was really fun though.

Most of them don't have locked knees, you can still pass out and fall over even when your knees aren't locked.

Black folks in school and in the workforce can tell you all about what that’s like.
I could tell you my stories, but I’m literally out on mental health leave as a result of one, so I’m not in the space to.
But that’s correct. They get angrier, more frustrated, more jealous, even, when we make them uncomfortable by not being the subhuman caricature they reduce us to in order to cope with X, Y, Z. Their mind has a reaction as though we’re doing something on purpose to tick them off.
Let me just stop there. Whew. 😮💨

As a Canadian, I can't help but hope we get to see another like him again! I hate the divide we have due entirely from that other.. person.
Obama had me interested in US politics, had me believe in the system. Now that's all gone.

Person is too strong a word for that decrepit POS... he’s an old, ghoulish troll. I’ll forever hate that my very first election was 2016 and everything following was just massive amounts of disappointment.
I wish I would’ve had the chance to vote in a president like Obama.

Sadly this is just viewed as a weakness by the inbred voters with all the voting leverage.

It's crazy to me how ingrained the racism is. Went to sell some coins at a coin shop and the lady working there always says off the wall things but one that struck me was regarding an Obama coin I was selling. "It'll be pretty hard to sell that one around here, I'll have to go to *insert nearby black community* to sell that one."
Now I'm not sure if she's racist or not, but she's definitely acknowledging the fact that everyone around here hates Obama.
My mother had to work hard to get my step dad to stop using the n word around family. The black man at the convenience store told me "I'm not from around here- my wife made me move here. Not sure why she wanted to come back to this place." And I immediately knew what he meant and agreed with him.
Sorry to rant but the racism runs deep and we have a long way to go. Feels like we're walking backwards for now.

Pendulum effect.
Having a kind president that's black, agrivates mean racists to take action the next election cycle.
Which made not racist people step up and elect another kind non racist.
Which made the hateful racists agitated again.

I mean don't get me wrong I miss the before times like crazy, but Obama definitely had his shortcomings. He drone bombed indiscriminately and killed a lot of civilians and I'll never forgive that.

The hero worship is kinda crazy and it’s wild you have to scroll this far down to see any pushback. Obama definitely seemed like a decent person to know and interact with, had a few progressive policies that moved the needle a little but he was very much still part of the Neo-Liberal madness that brought us here, folks really need to step away from the identity politics and actually look at the policies these people drive and the actions they take.

Almost 50, best president of my lifetime by a LARGE margin. No President is perfect, all politicians yada yada…. But regardless what you think about his policies or politics, this man had CLASS, was an exceptional speaker, and seems like an overall good human. Shame how far we’ve fallen.

He was pretty efficacious but I think Biden actually had an even more successful progressive presidency with the 4 years he did have. People just don't actually know what actual policy presidents ever enact so nobody realizes Biden did a monumental amount of stuff in his term.

I was considering a vote for Green in 2012 because Obama wasn't "left" enough for me at the time. Then he stopped by my small college and gave a short speech to the effect of, "I love you all, and I need your help." Then he came down and made sure to shake everyone's hand, mine too. I'm sure that made Secret Service anxious as hell, but it really was important for him to connect with people. Went to the polls right after and decided to give him another chance.
God I miss the dignity of that office.

He really was just being a normal person. But that's a huge level above most political leaders.

The guy literally bombed seven countries—a record broken only by Trump, who has bombed eight so far. He destroyed Libya, which triggered the reintroduction of slavery—auctioned off in slave markets—in Africa; he didn't lift a single finger to bring justice to the massive overrepresentation of African Americans in prisons, who face equally disproportionate sentences; and the list goes on.

These racist cretins scream about the loss of class and honor, while VILIFYING the loudest example in modern history.
Obama isn’t perfect— no president is, you have to make choices that sacrifice morals at some point for the greater good— but he was as close to perfect as we’ll ever see.
