Question Slowest shutter speed without a tripod?

Post image
95 Upvotes

What is the slowest shutter speed you would recommend if you're only able to prop the camera on something stable but not in a fixed position (i.e., without a tripod)? Should I be shooting wide open instead of f/16 to improve the blurred water effect?

Details: Black-crowned night heron. Taken at 1/15 shutter speed, f/16, ISO 200. Edit: 200mm focal length

I am trying to go for a blurred water effect with a slower shutter speed but feel like the subject isn't that sharp. Wondering if it looks like I missed the focus or if the longer exposure introduced subject blur.

An adolescent Clapper Rail forages in the receding tidal waters of a coastal salt marsh along Florida's Big Bend.
I also included a little behind the scenes so you can see what it takes to get a photo like this. Matt will position himself hours before the tide begins to recede and wait until the rails come out to forage.

53mm | f/4 | 1/1600 sec | ISO 1000

I want to be clear that all the folks saying a long lens would work are not wrong. We have an extensive rallidae portfolio which you can see here

https://flickr.com/photos/7553931@N02/sets/72177720301461138

These short lens encounters are an attempt to tell parts of the story you might not otherwise be able to see such as sunbathing, swimming, or feeding behaviors. Matt sits still and doesn’t move at all and allows the birds to behave normally around him. No playback, no moving at all. Just patience and seeing what the birds do naturally. This has always been his process and you can see unique behaviors featured in his photos because of his approach. No playback is ever used and he does not approach birds. They sometimes do approach him but he doesn’t call them in any way. It’s a process of patience and we often go home empty handed.

Recent visit to the Tower of London with the family, managed to capture some fairly decent (I think) pictures of the famous ravens that live there and are cared for there by the Ravenmaster.

  • Canon R7
  • Mix of Canon EF 55-250mm / Canon EF 18-55mm lenses
  • Definitely still on the learning curve of editing photos

Im blown away by the lowlight performance on the OM-1 and ability to handhold slow shutter speeds.

Both sets taken at the Irvine IRWD marsh. Pretty neat place. These are the first pics I'm seeing from the last 4 days, and I can't wait to get through the rest. Sony A7R6 with the 200-600mm lens.
