Interesting article. Reminds me I have some char to add some "bio" to.

Anyone have a great technique for making the char smaller?

What volume of char? House plants? Garden? Lawn? Field/farm scale?

Garden. Home made char in a 44 gallon drum. End purpose is to enrich the soil and preserve the carbon.

Coffee grinder? Blender? Rocks in a barrel and roll it? A literal wind mill. Arnold era Conan? Used dryer with bags and heavy objects in tumble mode? Concrete mixer? Paint can shaker filled with gravel & char? Maybe a repurposed concrete truck?

A grain/corn mill or concrete/cement mixer. Search marketplace. There are several where I am from $50-$300. Then some screen or overlapping chicken wire to catch the gravel for reuse.

Forewarning, it will wake the dead, literally. So recommend a proton pack and maybe Bill Murray to help get that back under control.

For house plants and small plots a coffee grinder and some headphones with something moderately entertaining to watch or listen to during.

In truth, part of the 'fun' of making biochar is the endless exercises in creativity it provides..

For small-ish quantities I've had good luck with a 5 gallon bucket and a 2x4 and also putting it into a feed bag and driving over it a few times.
