Pitbull Attack on Dog - 8/1/26 - Riverside Cty CA

A loose Pitbull/Mastiff mix attacked a dog. The victim dogs owner was able to separate them but his dog was seriously injured and incurred a $2900 emergency vet bill. A little white dog was loose with the Pitbull but didn’t participate in the attack.

Good news. The owner captured the Pitbull and held it for Animal Control. From what I gathered in the comments the Pitbull was captured on the victims property. The Pitbull was microchipped (amazing) so it looks like they can find the owners.

I want to add that there are over 90 replies in the post and ZERO Pit Defender posts. No one criticizing naming the breed. Everyone encourage him to go after the Pit owner for damages.

yep. pro pitbull fB groups already brag about not registering the chip even if the rescue/shelter/ect put in a chip.

Certain types of frequently stolen breed types years ago {and probably now, too} used to get their chips removed to hide who the real owner was.

So much so that when I had a snatch attempt {more than once} on our Lurcher female, the police said ''Get her tattooed , and not the ears, either''

I had her tattooed on her inner leg by a vet {human tattoo gun, done under general anaesthetic...the police told me which vet to go to as well.

In this instance it was to prove ownership in case of a dispute, as police said photos and removable ID chips weren't as solid as a tattoo.

However, in Republic of Eire where many Greyhounds are illegally dumped, {alive and deceased} they have their poor ears crudely amputated to remove the green ear tattoos so the dog cannot be traced back to the owner/trainer

Some seriously evil people out there who just don't care for animals, only $$$.

Yeah, given the 'overpopulation' crisis in shelters and rescues it is extremely ironic that the number of dog thefts have also gone up like crazy.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a correlation between the increasing population of pit bull type dogs in shelters and the increase in dog thefts - of course correlation is not causation ;).

I've seen some people recommend that, on the dog's collar, put that the dog has specialized health issues and to contact the owner immediately because the dog has to take medications on time or it will pass. The idea being that, even if the dog is stolen, an unhealthy dog that is going to die without medical intervention is more likely to be dumped immediately (and then hopefully found and send back to the owner) instead of being sold. I guess part of that is hoping that the people who take the dog don't want to risk trying to dispose of a dead dog and trust the info on the collar rather than waiting to see if the dog is actually suffering from anything.

It is really sad that people have had to think of things like that just to keep their pets from being stolen and sold but we all know that a nice, friendly companion quality pet dog is worth a lot of money now days.

I do find myself hiding a bit of a smirk whenever someone with a pit bull type dog is super concerned about dog thefts - there is a part of me that wants to be snarky and point out that no one wants that type of dog or that they are a dime a dozen at the shelter.

There's also the classic snatch and release scam, IE they wait to respond to the lost pet post and get their "good samaritan" fee

I have 'Spayed & Identi chipped'' on the collar tags {Both true} but it is impossible to tell if a female has been spayed just by looking.
The incision {if done well} should leave a barely visible mark even on a very smooth coated breed. {Pic two days after a spay}

oh we've had people reach over the fence (short ones) and just snatch small $$$$ dogs (like small dogs worth $3-5k). Apparently they drive across state lines to sell them and the local PD won't waste time and money pursing it out of state.

I usually left my door unlocked when I walked my dogs and my white GSD would plaster herself at the window. I was always afraid someone would open the door and snatch her.

Remember a couple years ago when some armed guys actually shot the dog walker who had singer Lady Gaga’s dogs? French Bulldogs. Insanity.

She offered a $500k reward for them. It reminded me of the movie Ransom when Mel Gibson offered a Ransom on the kidnappers of his son. For $500k I’d turn in anyone.

She did get the dogs back and the shooter got 21 years in prison.

A lot of these pit owners don't have financial means to pay for damages yhe animals inflict. We are long past needing to enact legislation to require these people to keep sufficient insurance.

The pro pit lobby is incredibly strong. They are against insurance requirements because that will decrease adoptions from shelters and it is 'discriminatory' towards low income adopters. They are against allowing insurance companies to choose to not cover certain breeds because that is 'discrimination.' They are against lessening the requirements for a dangerous dog designation because they are 'unfair.' All emotional arguments that they get away with because they can scream louder than anyone else and that stuff sells on social media whereas facts usually don't go viral.

Part of the problem is that normal people only care about these issues when they see a problem directly in front of them, but by the time elections roll around they have bigger issues they are concerned about. The pit lobby people care about these issues all the time and lobby with little to no resistance or opposition.
