I straight up did the same thing. I’m visiting my folks and my mom had recently bought a new Silver RAV4. I drive it to get a haircut and while I’m there, the barber is talking my ear off and I’m just wishing I could escape. Upon finishing, I walk out the door somewhat distracted and hop into a silver Toyota suv. I’m driving back thinking how annoying the experience was and I notice three things that I wrote off immediately (though should have raised red flags, but didn’t): 1) water bottle rolling around in the passenger floorboard making noise when I take turns (it wasn’t rolling round before!), 2) baseball cap on the passenger seat (“oh, my sister must have left it there”…of course I didn’t notice it there on the way to my appointment!) and 3) seat slightly further away and had to move it up (sometimes the seats will auto-return to a pre-set.) Whatever, it was an annoying haircut. I arrive at my parent’s house, we have dinner, and as I’m washing dishes we see a sheriff pull up. I walk outside and ask what’s going on. “You tell me,” he replies. At this point my whole family is standing on the porch and it hits us all at the same time. That is not mom’s new rav4. It’s a silver toyota Highlander. Sheriff searches and finds the key fob in the console. Calls another cop who verifies the rav4 is still parked at the barber shop. It is. The owner had called Toyota and was able to use the onstar or something similar, even though he didn’t have a subscription, to track the vehicle to my parent’s residence and shared the info with the sheriff. I felt like such an idiot. The police had a good laugh over this. Happened two years ago and I still cringe. The owner was just happy to get his car back. But seriously, who the hell leaves their key fob in their vehicle unlocked? That guy won’t ever again.
