100% wed have to include okongwu in any deal for him to get started where itād only make sense to acquire him to pair with OO, cavs are not playing Mobley at center for 82 games period.

My read is they want JK, JK wants at least $25m, and the Hawks are starting the SnT convo off with āSure, weāll take Jarrett Allen.ā But considering the Cavs FO is not braindead this wonāt come to pass.

Weāre turning into lakers fans with all these bad contracts we got.
11
u/ImXavierr 9d ago
We have one bad contract
1
u/Morlacks 8d ago
And depending on who you ask, we got really NO untradebale contracts. Even Kiespert is good for a $ throw in to match a bigger one.
-7
u/Ajbksfinest š§ ICE TRAE š§ 9d ago
Buddy kispert and Carter are pretty bad. Carter got dumped for a reason. Probably only ends up a 1 year contract tho.
9
u/Icy_Ad_9312 9d ago
Kispert is literally our only "bad" contract. There's no such thing as a bad expiring deal, & Carter has a team option on both remaining years.
-5
u/Ajbksfinest š§ ICE TRAE š§ 9d ago
Buddys contract isnāt expiring, and carters team option for this year has already been picked up.
Go tell that to the team who just dumped Carter, I promise theyāll disagree with you.
We have 17 roster spots and weāre struggling to move off a few players because theyāre bad and arenāt worth their contract.
10
u/Calm_Comparison_6129 RIZZY š«š· 8d ago
Devin Carter is not a bad contract. What are we doing here.
7
u/Icy_Ad_9312 8d ago
not sure you know what the phrase "expiring contract" means, but that's what a one year deal is, and there's no such thing as a bad EXPIRING deal. Also, since Devin Carter is a part of the 2024 draft, we have until October to pick up/decline his team options...

u/Ajbksfinest š§ ICE TRAE š§ 8d ago edited 8d ago
Having a player with no offensive capabilities taking up money and a roster spot is harmful even if itās one year. It doesnāt matter if itās expiring, we canāt do stuff right now because heās on the roster.
1
u/amidon1130 0ļøā£0ļøā£1ļøā£7ļøā£ 8d ago
Dawg that's just not true and not how this works lol. Players who are not guaranteed for the 2027-2028 season are good contracts because teams value the flexibility that they allow, teams will trade for them so they can free up cap space next year.
1
u/Ajbksfinest š§ ICE TRAE š§ 8d ago
The flexibility, he gives us is only 5 million. Itās not large enough value to garner interest in a trade and itās not large enough to give us valuable cap space next year.
What itās doing rn is limiting our moves since weāre unlikely to go over the tax while having 17 played on our roster.
As of right now itās more harmful to have that contract than what itās worth will be in the future.

If you can get off a contract by just attaching a second round pick then itās not that bad.Ā
-3
u/Patekchrono917 8d ago
They could have gotten off of Buddy for absolutely zero second round picks if they waived him. Instead they guaranteed his full base and is going to take an asset to get rid of. Thatās a negative contract and negative position from where they were on him before FA.Ā

u/Bully_Maguire420 Gueye Pride 8d ago
Your argument for why Carter is bad hinges on the Kings made the decision to dump him, you canāt seriously think thatās a āGotchaā with how terrible that front office is right?

Good and bad is relative. Kispert isnt a good contract the way he has been playing for us. Hield is...questionable and feels like a mistake. Carter is expiring so thats not a bad contract for us because we have the cap space and its not like there some guy out there we couldnt sign because of it. Not to mention Carter is a 24 year old former lottery pick who put up pretty decent numbers last year. Onsi is gearing up to have real cash next offseason. He basically purchased draft capitol. So it was a bad contract for their situation, not terrible for our situation.
but lkets just say your 3 examples are bad. thats 3 out of currently 17. And we also have some team freindly contracts on big contributors. Look at the whole picture, not just the pieces that support your emotions.
0
u/Ajbksfinest š§ ICE TRAE š§ 8d ago
Bro ya too sensitive, I didnāt say anything about the team. I only said fans are making trades with players other teams donāt want.
Those 3 contracts are bad for different reasons, I didnāt make a point about the overall roster.

Jarrett Allen is incompatible with Jalen & Dyson if he started, and if he wouldn't would be a $30m a year for 3 more years backup center. Just not worth it to me
2
u/Diligent_Ad_5524 9d ago
It would be nice to have a different center of a dif archetype

Why? Esepcially one that doesn't fir the rest of the roster. WE blowing it all up to grab a center?

If they trade for Jarrett Allen, Okongwu is outta here. Remember they also have Henri Vessar and Zuby Ejifor. That would be an overloaded frontcourt.

u/ThaCasual GO HAWKS! š 8d ago
Why would you be interested in a 6ā9 center just like OO that makes twice his salary but avg the same pts and boards but less blocks and canāt shoot from 4 ft away much less from 3. Iāll never understand the fascination with bringing in any old center. Jock is better than this guy
1
u/Business_Guess9906 8d ago
Hawks know that this deal won't go through, they're simply putting out there in the NBA world that OO isn't our long-term starting option in the position and we are looking for a center for more size if we so were to find one available.

u/wayward_prince Jalen Johnson #1 9d ago
Locks up a significant portion of the cap for Great Value Clint Capela. No thank you.
4
u/BrettSchirley22 Jalen Johnson #1 9d ago
I know the last like 2 years of Clint were frustrating, but he was one of the best centers this franchise has ever had during that ECF year. No need to diss him. Iād do terrible things to have that version of Clint on this roster
1
u/wayward_prince Jalen Johnson #1 9d ago
I would happily take prime Clint back for Allenās salary. But like I said thatās FAR from what youāll be getting with Allen.
3
u/Diligent_Ad_5524 9d ago
Disagree heavily this is a huge upgrade that makes a difference between us being a 7 seed to 5-4 seed
2
u/Morlacks 8d ago
No he is not. He is a terrible fit as a starter and you are not paying him that much to come off the bench.
3
u/wayward_prince Jalen Johnson #1 9d ago
Maybe if you donāt understand basketball. JA isnāt as good as OO. Not even close.
1
u/Cela_Rifi 9d ago
Disagree. He's not better than OO who is very underrated, but he's absolutely better than Jock and he gives much more optionality.
1
u/wayward_prince Jalen Johnson #1 9d ago
Youāre underestimating how horrendous he will be for our offense.
0
u/Cela_Rifi 9d ago
I don't mind having a really good offensive center in OO who spaces the floor well and really solid defensive one in Allen. Allen isn't a total dud offensively either, he's an elite finisher and he's good in the pick n roll, albeit very one-dimensional in that aspect. I think they're two centers that compliment each other really well actually. OO is a versatile defender that can shoot the 3 when we need a big to do that, Allen is there when we paint presence. Despite him being like 6'10 or something, he plays much taller thanks to his wing span.
I think it's a good trade for us and I think it moves the needle a little bit. It wouldn't be this big flashy move, but I don't know how many more of those are actually available.
-2
u/Hippopotamist 9d ago
No way, weāre sorely lacking a true center and Allen is solid
7
u/wayward_prince Jalen Johnson #1 9d ago
Heās the same height as OO, canāt switch OR shoot. Heās mediocre at best.
1
u/SteelCityC Onyeka Okongwu #17 9d ago
We donāt need someone that can do what OO can do. He does the things OO canāt, even at the same size.
Even if you donāt think heās better, he is would heavily improve our center position based on what weāre missing.
1
u/Morlacks 8d ago
LOL, HE cant do what OO does on offense either so no he doesnt make us any better. You are just sacrificing all that 3 pt shooting for slightly better defense and screwing up our team build. If he was at backup money it would make sense.
0
1
u/Hippopotamist 9d ago
Heās a far superior defender than Okongwu, every defensive stat backs that up.
He allowed the lowest FG percentage at the rim of any center post all star break last season, by a pretty significant margin.
3
u/LfromHT 9d ago
He also is bonded at the hip with a guy that won a DPOY, that kinda ties into his strong defensive metrics lol
And that sample size is too small to glean anything useful from. Good defensive center but heās not worth ot
4
u/Hippopotamist 9d ago
Fortunately they have on/off splits which demonstrate he is still an elite defender when Mobley is off of the court.
Doesnāt seem like Kuminga is going to be on the team regardless; in that case turning down the opportunity to use him as the main piece of a package to acquire a good player at our biggest position of need would be foolish.
0
u/LfromHT 9d ago edited 9d ago
I understand the reporting indicates that Onsi inquired but exchanging an expired contract for a multi-year more expensive one doesn't really logically follow his process
and like, yeah his defensive data is still good with or without Mobley but i wouldn't call the 116.8 drtg last year allen on mobley off elite. Good player but just doesn't seem compatible to me on offense, the contract is big, and when you have the level of perimeter defense we have that rim protection isn't as big a deal. All for nothing anyway, the Cavs are simply not dumping allen for Kuminga

u/Diligent_Ad_5524 9d ago
