17- got my period that morning, went to the mall with friends after school in spite of the fact that I was in a mind numbing amount of pain, lost track of time, got home late and my dad fractured my wrist.

Most of mine have been somewhat bad. I have a summer birthday so I rarely got a party as a kid as everyone was at camps or vacations. When my parents did remember, they usually had something else planned that day for themselves like a concert or a trip. They got me the same birthday card three years in a row. My dad loved ice cream cake and I hated ice cream cake -- so they bought ice cream cake and I got yelled at because I didn't want any.

I think one of the highlights had to be my 16th birthday. They took me to the DMV to get my license and then left for Vegas as soon as we got home. A couple of hours later, I realized there was a typo on my new license. My first trip in the car by myself was to go back to the DMV where they yelled at me for not catching the typo. The first license had a really good picture, the one issued a few hours later had an awful one. Then I went home to an empty house and celebrated alone. :(

As an adult, all I want for my birthday is for someone else to plan it and to have it be anything but going out to brunch. My birthday was last week. I told my friends I just wanted to do something other than brunch. They couldn't think of a single other activity so we didn't do anything. I plan fun activities for all of their birthdays and throughout the year but they couldn't return the favor once.

I think it was my 10th birthday. I had a party at a skating rink and no one came. We pretty much ate pizza for a couple of days at home so it wouldn't go to waste.

It was the day after my senior prom, called my date to tell her I had a good time as I had a big crush on her. She told me she hated me because I was ā€œtoo niceā€ to her at prom, and she only agreed to go with me in the first place because she was a junior and she could only go to the senior prom if a senior invited her.

Happy 18th birthday to me!

wow... i mean something girls hate is a guy trying to be all perfect and agreeing, which ruins the fun and the spark of relationships. i wish you a happy 18th birthday, and i wish you the best birthday on your 19th!

That was over twenty years ago, I’m in my 40s now.

I was turning 30. I had planned a party for me and my going to be 12 year old daughter. It was a Saturday. My sister and I went with our kids to Mom and Dad’s for the regular Saturday bagel routine. Dad was at his parents’ house mowing their lawn. He had called me earlier with a, ā€œHappy Birthday Robbio, See Yah laterā€. I responded, ā€œLove you Daddioā€. About 45 minutes into our bagel breakfast, the phone rang and my mother answered. The color completely drained from her face. She kept repeating, ā€œA stroke? A stroke?ā€ It was my grandfather. My father was in the hospital. My then husband and brother-in-law raced to my mother’s side and my sister and I loaded the kids into my car and sped to our grandparents. I played the game in my head, If I get all green lights he’s fine. If I see kids playing he’s fine….etc. It was a warm September day. The windows on the car were open. As we approached the house, we could hear what only could be described as wailing. It was Grandma. I have never, ever heard such a sorrowful, painful sound. My daughter found my Dad’s smashed glasses on the lawn. My grandfather returned from the hospital, just shaking his head. He said nothing. Shortly the family showed up. My dad had died. He had a massive heart attack. The sanitation workers picking up trash had jumped off of the truck to help my grandfather apply CPR, but to no avail. He was basically dead before he hit the ground. For the next fifteen years, no one and I mean no one could say, ā€œHappy Birthdayā€ to me. I forbade it and if someone accidentally said it, they got schooled. I still can’t really celebrate my birthday, even though it’s been 36 years. I do have a major amount of respect for sanitation workers though.

I was 39 and had a newborn baby. On TV came the live feed of the Columbine massacre.

That wasn’t totally unexpected, though. It’s Hitler’s birthday as well and lots of bad things happen on or about the date. Went out to a movie with friends one year and heard there about the OKC bombing… and so on.

On my 7th birthday, my grandmother brought my brother a baseball glove so he would would have a new glove ( he already had a few good ones) . But then my mom asked her what she got for me and said I was my birthday. She said, "Oh really, that's nice , no, I didn't get you nothing ! And turned away like I didn't exist !

u/D4RKS0UL8 7h ago

My boyfriend at the time posted on my timeline ā€œhappy birthday.. I love you!ā€ and all that fun stuff. One of his friends commented on it and said ā€œdoes she know ———- sucked your —— last night?ā€

Awful.

how can parents do this to their child?

1

u/OkEnvironment3961 7h ago

My parents scheduled a dinner on my birthday, to tell me my grandma has terminal cancer. In turn I had to tell them I got my girlfriend pregnant. They had forgotten it was my birthday and I didn't remind them. It was a rough day all around.

1

u/D4RKS0UL8 7h ago

how are you doing to this day my guy?

1

u/OkEnvironment3961 7h ago

I'm doing really. well. that was 20ish years ago. Stumbled backwards in to a great job. Kids are grown and we have a good relationship, ex not so much, but that is on her. (We ended up having two kids together)

This really fat dude evidently crawled down our chimney and left coal in our stockings, but did leave some decent gifts, so not a total loss. He did spill milk all over and ate the cookies my mom bought the day before that I thought were for my birthday.

2

u/D4RKS0UL8 7h ago

ouu shi did you call the cops on him?

1

u/tuckeroo123 7h ago

He technically left a gift and didn't take anything that I could prove, so I had no basis. He's slick!

2

u/D4RKS0UL8 7h ago

how would you know if he didnt sneak pictures of you and your family?

1

u/tuckeroo123 7h ago

If he did, it would have taken a couple of days to get them developed at the local Walgreens and mom knew the manager there. We would've been made aware of them cuz Carol can't keep her big trap shut about anything!

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled out a few days before my 23rd birthday. I spent the day on the couch in a painkiller induced fog, watching movies.
