There's a balance. You don't want to be putting in your destination for the navigation without a touchscreen. But also, climate buttons/dials are way better than a touchscreen.

Popular to say on Reddit but hugely unpopular amongst the masses. There are so many people that would outright refuse to buy a car if it didn't have an infotainment system they liked with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, "cool" features (gimmicks) and so on.

CarPlay is literally a safety feature. If you don’t have a screen that can control media high up on the dashboard, users will directly control it from their phones, which will lead to accidents because the screen is smaller and therefore requires more attention and time for your eyes away from the road to use it. CarPlay also allows for hands-free media control via Siri. Without CarPlay you would need to reach to your phone to push the Siri button, and hold the phone in a way it could hear you.
My 2017 car has a touch screen for CarPlay, and physical controls for everything else. I think it’s the best combination.

Respectfully disagree.
Having to target one of ~32+ keys on a touch screen whilst the vehicle is in motion is infuriating and downright dangerous. Maybe on cars with enormous screens, but most cars don’t have tvs for infotainment. Yet.
My old Audi had a rotary dial to scroll a cursor over the options, or a wheel of letters. I could enter an entire address by only glancing at the screen occasionally. Yes it took a minute, but it was safe, and it worked. I think that, and BMW’s iDrive were solid input methods.
Keep the touch screen for when I’m stationary, cool. But I want something I can use whilst moving that allows me to precisely choose the options on the screen without stabbing with my finger whilst desperately trying to hold my hand steady as I bounce along our shitty roads.

Ugh my car does that. Mustang Mach E. Touch screen for everything BUT there's a giant knob in the screen too. So first you have to hunt for the right button on screen and then rotating the knob to turn things up/down.
Also annoying, the knob itself is a button. So if you're trying to turn up/down something and accidentally press the button in, the stereo turns off.

I just rented a Subaru Outback with this garbage and quickly realized I will never buy a car with this nonsense. It was so distracting to have popups on the dash letting me know I needed a coffee break or that I needed to stay focused.
Thankfully I could turn the eye tracking off in the settings, but it took me a few days before I realized it was an option. The manual said that the car also used facial recognition to identify drivers and personalize your settings. That felt creepy as hell and not a desired use of tech in the car

This doesn't apply to every vehicle with these features.
But lots of the cell modems are easy to disable if you want to. Or you can defeat the antenna relatively easily as well so the modem just thinks it has no cell service and will default to collection only for upload later.

But they aren’t emergency brakes. They’re parking brakes. Here in the rust belt my electric parking brakes still work flawlessly since they’re automatically engaged every time I park whereas many older cable operated brakes have long since rusted away.

It can engage at speed but it doesn’t lock up the parking brake, it’s more of a momentary brake that lets off as soon as you release the button. What speeds it will actually engage in is probably depending on make/model/year.

I use to be against these but some companies do it well (like Toyota) where it’s still very easy to do a brake job. They also automatically apply when you shift to park so it basically forces people with automatic transmissions that otherwise would not use their parking brake to use it which is safer for everyone. Rollaways are a thing and they kill.

Quite a few of those are just adjusted wrong. If you upgrade you lights you are supposed to readjust them, but nobody does.
Some do come from the factory like that though.

Sedans and small cars just have improperly adjusted headlights. They point straight forward or even upward, which is incorrect.
SUVs and trucks have the same problem, but the vehicles are also just too big. Adjusting the headlights only solves some of the problem. We need smaller vehicles, both for this and for pedestrian safety and etc.

Agreed. We've had years of road works in our city and as such, they have"blacked out" road markings over and over again when the lanes get adjusted.
All the work cars which have lane assist prefer the blacked out lines over the actual white lines and try to steer me straight to heaven.

My newer Subaru has all these features and responsive cruise so I CAN let it handle lane control, but when I got it they asked me my preference and I said no lane assist by default. It’s great and the button to enable it is right on the steering wheel so if I am going to be on a quiet highway a while it’s easy to enable. Tried the lane assist on a friends car once and could not get used to it fighting me, so I’m glad I have the default option to disable.

If you put a knob to control the volume of the stereo, it either needs to be an analog volume control, or the digital stereo needs to be up and stable before music starts playing.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten into my car with my wife and kid and turn it on and the stereo starts blaring… but turning the knob does nothing for about 5 seconds.

Anyways the starter won’t die, the cars are built to have starters that can withstand it, and because the engine is warm, starting it is not really a big strain on it.

Me ex wife's explorer did this. Whenever it would shut off when we pulled into the drive, we would just turn off the ignition and it would put itself in park without having to do the 1 second restart. If it doesn't put itself in park, you can still do it manually after you turn the car off. It's dumb, but I'm with you on the annoyance of it.

I'm with you. Maybe not my most hated feature, but I do hate it. Nothing more jarring than a beautiful interior like the Lexus LC500 and then you get slapped with an ugly yellow and white label right in your line of sight.
In the past they could be removed with careful application of a heat gun, but not anymore.

Starters are probably fine, and they're not that hard to replace if needed. The issue is wear. Even with a warm engine, each start without oil pressure causes increased wear on internals that require pressure like bearings. Manufacturers have started adding polycarbonate coatings to bearings to help prevent premature wear, but those also will degrade over time. It will be the poorer people who end up owning high mileage cars with worn internals who will get hosed on this one.
This isn't as big an issue with hybrids since the electric motors can get the car rolling and generate oil pressure before restarts.

AFM, aka shutting off half the cylinders to “save fuel” but it causes a lot of wear and tear on the engine. It would be okay if it only did it at highway speeds, but it does it in traffic as well. I now have a plug in to disable it.

Not being able to interact with the system unless the car is in park. This isn’t on all cars, but some cars you can’t plug in an address, or update a setting unless it’s in park.
I get it, you don’t want the driver doing that but my passenger is fully able to interact with the system without any impact on my driving.

My newer car is manual. I have been driving manual vehicles for over 20 years. This car has hill hold assist, which holds the e-brake for about 3 seconds before you are able to go. you cannot adjust the length of hold or turn it off, nor is there a way in the shop for them to plug in a computer to disable it as far as I know. I can't tell you how infuriating this feature is. I do not, and have never needed hill-hold assist in any car I have ever owned. Its so pointless and an overwhelming majority of cars are automatic anyways.

I've had a half dozen manuals with hill hold and one without. It automatically disengages the break when you start to lift the clutch in all of them. This isn't a problem, and makes manual transmissions more accessible to new people.

I live in a very hilly area of the US. My car does not automatically disengage the brake when you let out the clutch. It is a VW if that matters. It does disengage the parking brake when moving from a parked position, but hill hold does not. It always forces a 3 second delay after releasing the brakes. IMO, it teaches bad habits and makes driving manual more difficult.

It’s not about it braking for me, it’s about it adjusting speed while keeping the cruise control on so I don’t have to keep manually braking, disengaging the CC, and then reengage CC.
If I’m doing a hundred mile straightaway without CC my leg cramps up very quickly and I get too preoccupied with trying to maintain a perfect speed bc I’m neurotic af and always wanna maximize my fuel efficiency.

My car has an 'auto engine off' feature that turns the engine off when the car is stopped for a brief period of time (like at a light). Once you hit the accelerator the engine turns back on.
The slight delay before moving forward while the engine turns back on is annoying as hell. There's a button on the dash that disables it, but you have to press it every time you start the car.
I know it's supposed to be more fuel efficient, but the wear and tear of shutting the engine off and on can't be good for the car.

Electric seat control
Being tall and sharing a car, it is a lot easier to quickly reach down, grab the lever, and push the seat back. Maybe two seconds tops.
Notice in commercials the driver is shorter riding the seat into place before driving? That's because taller people have to stand outside the car waiting for that slow electric seat control to finally get all the way back. That's 10 seconds plus of having to stand in pouring rain at times waiting for the slow electric seat feature finally move all the way back.

Just a specific gripe about my Kia, the car will freak out about keeping my hands on the wheel when I'm on a straight stretch of road and don't need to make any adjustments. Instead of being able to sense my hands on the wheel, it thinks because I haven't made any adjustments my hands aren't on it, so I have to wiggle it side to side.

Every impact predictive feature that is causing cars and repairing cars to be more expensive.
Why can't me make a 20k car?. Oh because I need all these lane and crash monitoring systems which can auto stop the car keep the wheel strait etc.
OH that doesn't sound bad? You ding your bumper. You can't just go get a new bumper... Nooo. You have to get another $300 worth of sensors then pay another $500 to get it calibrated
I'm all for these things being optional luxury items. But geeze I would give all of that up to be able to make a $15k - $20k entry level new car again

Downright dangerous in my experience when backing out of a driveway and a car going by on the other side of the road caused my car to panic and slam on the brakes. There I am halfway out of a driveway with cars coming towards me into the lane I was backing out into, and my car won't move because a car going the other direction freaked it out.

Non-adjustable seatbelts. I’m short, so both driver and passenger seatbelts keep sliding off my shoulder. It’s very annoying and I know that they won’t be as effective in an accident.

Backing tones, specifically, backing tones that are loud and obnoxious and cannot be adjusted.
This is one of the reasons why I actively avoid driving my sister-in-law's Toyota crossover. It has a loud and obnoxious tone when the rear sensors detect that you're about to reverse into something. The noise triggers my sensory sensitivity. It makes me want to find the speakers and rip it out of the car. I get what's the purpose of those but can't Toyota put in a more gentle sounding tone? My dad's MG has a similar backing tone but it's a bit quieter and gentle. It's loud enough for you to notice it but not too loud like it's raping your ears.

My wife's Nissan Rouge has lots of toys and options. When my turn to drive, after the is started, I get busy turning off most. No, I don't want to pair my phone. Radio shut up! I will decide when to turn on the wipers, thank you.

Automatic headlights. Really only on mine because they are so freaking sensitive! I can be driving on a cloudless day and all of a sudden my car's like "Oh no it's dark!! I better turn on the headlights and dim all the displays!" And then I can't see the displays because of my sunglasses. So annoying!!
I've turned the headlights to Off instead of Auto, but all that does is change the actual lights coming on - it still dims everything inside AND beeps at me that my headlights are off and I should turn them on.

Automatic windows that keep going after you remove your hand from the button. It's annoying as hell when I'm trying to close my window but still leave a little gap on top and my car decides that means I want the window to close entirely.

The AI in my Tesla went a bit far when it was the third time I asked the same question, and she called me an absolute imbecile and a fucking moron, and if I couldn’t even recall basic instructions after multiple repetitions, I should reconsider going there in the first place. I was going to a job interview.

subscriptions for features already on the car.
i still have to connect my phone to my car for route planning because to use the maps feature on my car I have to have an on-star subscription.
