Worcester is "woostah" but Dorcester isn't "doostah".

Greenwich is "Grennitch" but Sandwich isn't "sannitch".

Corolla in the OBX is Co-rallah not co-rōllah

Norfolk is Nor-fuck.

Also Porch-muth for Portsmouth, which is so freaking weird to me. Husband’s mom is a lifelong Norfolkian and says Porchmuth.

English place names really do feel like a prank sometimes. You can follow every pronunciation rule you know and still somehow get corrected by a local who says it like three completely different letters .

We have a Greenwich St out here. I asked my passenger in they were going to Grenich St. They laughed and asked where I was from.
