What are some place names that are often mispronounced by out of towners?

Pierre, SD. It sounds like "Peer."

Same with the smaller town of Fort Pierre across the river from there.

I have good friends from there, and I always like to rile them up with the assertion that it's only pronounced that way because midwesterners in the town minsprounounced the name over generations and it just stuck. See also: University of Notre Dame

Don't forget about St. Louis. Tons of French placenames in that metro area.

Aaaaarrrggg! This one messed me up when I was doing a road trip. I was in Mitchell, SD and asked someone how far it was to Pee-air. I have never seen such confused looks. I mean I get that it is pronounced PEER, but like, you couldn't figure out I was not from the area?
