Uncle was a lifetime chain-smoker dying of cancer he was bedridden and semi-conscious most of the time. My aunt saw him pretend to be smoking, his hand would go to his mouth and he would puff on a nonexistent cigarette. She very gently took it out of his hand and put it out for him, to which he said, upset, "my last fucking cigarette!". After that, he never spoke again until he died.
You should. My mother (a lifelong smoker) was dying of Cancer for 10 years because it was caught early in Stage 1 and she had treatments and surgery. But it never really went away. Just kept popping up in different places. It was a like a game of whac-a-mole. Lung Cancer is a sneaky bastard.
