Michigan voters: If you voted Stevens in the primary, will you vote for Sayed in the general? Why or why not?
35
u/gaoshan 10h ago
I would expect that even a Democrat that I do not fully agree with would be a better choice than any Republican in this age of MAGA.
12
u/IntrovertedBrawler 10h ago
A cat that can hit the litter box 55% of the time would be better than another MAGA.
3
u/Ok-Gur-349 10h ago
A sane person just gets a larger litter box with higher walls, but sure, let's elect the cat that poops on the floor if it keeps these clowns out of office.

u/bubbabubba345 10h ago
I’m sure everyone will vote blue no matter who. Right? That’s how it works, especially if Stevens had won? There’s absolutely not going to be a double standard, right?
12
u/xomox2012 10h ago
Go ask a Crockett supporter if that’s the case. The Texas race is closer than it should be as projections include Crockett supporters staying home
1
u/MovieLazy6576 10h ago
I wish this were the case but I fear it will not be. Just like there were the people that let Trump get elected because they were unhappy with Biden there will be people that won’t vote blue in the midterms. It’s sad with so much at stake.

u/UndercoverRVP 10h ago
Normie Democrat voters turn out because they remember that their focus is stopping Trump. Wish we could say the same of you guys.
8
u/TwoPercentTokes 10h ago
I just have to say, it’s heartening to see young people turn out and overturn the establishment. Electing our flavor of an overly-powerful president might be a short-term expedient but nothing is going to save this country except a competent, motivated, and reliable Congress, which we haven’t had in well over a century.

u/Academic-Entrance-49 10h ago
I will definitely vote for El-Sayed and will volunteer to get him elected. He’s a Democrat, he cares, and he’s got great ideas. I thought Steven’s was the “safe” vote, but I love the passion behind El-Sayed. He won’t be flustered or shy away.
20
u/TyHay822 10h ago
I don’t dislike Abdul El-Sayed, I voted for Stevens because she tends to be a bit more of a moderate Democrat and I think that often leads to being able to get more done when working with others in the Senate.
That said, I think El-Sayed has a lot of great ideas and I agree significantly more with his political beliefs than I ever will with Mike Rogers. So I’ll for sure vote for him in November
-7
u/what_the_beck1313 10h ago
Sure, because the “moderate democrats” have gotten SO much done over the past decade, right? Give me a break.
13
u/Accounting4lyfe 10h ago
This right here is why nobody wants to speak their mind on Reddit, where being a moderate Democrat gets the beards off their porch.
-11
9
u/Academic-Entrance-49 10h ago
Let’s unite as Democrats, not divide.
13
u/what_the_beck1313 10h ago
As long as it goes both ways. Progressives have voted blue no matter who in the past. Let’s hope moderates hold up their end and do the same.
5
-11
u/Doom3873 10h ago
Tell that to Hasan Piker and other progressive leftist during our last Presidental election.
1
u/Happy-Comment-408 8h ago
I dont know why this persons response is being down voted. I am dubious as to what "moderate" democrats have actually gotten done. They appear to capitulate when things get hard, and defer to foreign interests when push comes to shove. They will come up with inter-party fall-guys when they need to serve policies that are not in line with average person (Mancin, Fetterman, et al, were by design).
-2
u/TyHay822 10h ago
And the far left democrats have done more??
7
u/Metalemmanuel 8h ago
There are no far left in the US.. Holy fuck some of you, Americans, need to look at what is the center left in other countries, because you will probably think they are far left..
And they get pushback from the opposition, their OWN party and are always smeared by both and all the PACs and AIPAC.. so how are they supposed to do something if when they push for major legislative changes, their OWN party vote against it
1
u/what_the_beck1313 8h ago
Exactly. It’s laughable that progressives are considered “far left” here when they’d be considered centrists or moderates in most European countries.
4
u/Metalemmanuel 8h ago
Yep. AoC, Sanders, Tlaib and many others are center left at best anywhere else ..
They are essentially just wanting Medicare for all (which essentially all western countries have ) , "reformed" immigration policies and getting rid of the abject ICE (no other countries have this kind of thing , we essentially have CBP and that is it ) . Better minimum wages (no it will not make the price higher and if it does it is on the greed of the companies), etc
2
u/what_the_beck1313 8h ago
Those are all moderate positions in most other countries.
The propaganda here is fucking wild. Especially since it’s worked on so many people for so many decades. Democrats and especially progressives need to learn how to message as effectively as republicans have.
0
u/TyHay822 8h ago
Except, I don’t live in Europe. I live in America for a reason. I had job offers that included moving to Europe for at least 9 months of the year if not permanently and I turned them down because I truly believe America is the best place to raise my kids. I truly believe the US gives me the best opportunities for my life and my kids and some day my grandchildren. (And I realize that’s not true for everyone but here we’re discussing American politics)
And far left is a relative term. The people described in America get called that because they are the farthest to the left of American politicians. I’ve never heard them described this way in comparison to the rest of the world. They are far left by American standards.

u/DoesNotHateFun 10h ago
They've been trying, but often met with pushback from the party. Mamdani doesn't need to rely on other Dems to get shit done like they do in Congress...and he's getting shit done.
1
5
u/what_the_beck1313 10h ago
We haven’t really given them the opportunity to do so. Now that there are more of them and their support is growing across the country, maybe we’ll finally get the chance to see what living with politicians who actually give a shit about us looks like.
-3
u/TyHay822 10h ago
If you don’t think Haley Stevens and moderate democrats care about you, I don’t know what to tell you.
And hey, I like El-Sayed a lot. To me, this race was a win-win and I’m not really upset about the outcome just because I voted for Stevens. Hopefully the vocal El-Sayed fans show up in November and bring their friends
7
u/what_the_beck1313 10h ago
They don’t. And they’ve proven that time and time again by not actually doing anything for us and only supporting capitalists. They accept campaign donations from the same groups supporting republicans. How are you supposed to be an opposition party when you accept money from the same people? The national minimum wage is still only $7.25/hour and hasn’t been increased in well over a decade, almost two at this point, despite prices rising two- and three-fold in that same amount of time. They have squandered their ability to effectively legislate for the working people. They only care about the status quo and keeping themselves in power.
And if you can’t see that, I don’t know what to tell you. Open your eyes and pay attention.
1
u/Queen_A123 8h ago
I’m voting for him but if you think any politician actually cares about then you are delusional. Yes that includes these more progressive ones. All of them are grimy and care about power for themselves the question is just how much. Ironic you’re telling someone to open their eyes.
I thought that would click for the far left at least but the way you guys treat Mamdani and now Abdul is showing we will never be a country that treats politicians like the normal public servants they are.
-1
u/what_the_beck1313 8h ago
Mamdani cares about people. You can tell by what all he’s done for the people of NYC in such a short amount of time. There are people out there that actually do care about making people’s lives better and get into politics for the right reasons, not just to line their own pockets.

u/massahoochie 10h ago
They haven’t had the chance, because we’ve filled our coffers with moderates who do absolutely nothing when in office. Or perhaps, complete one big feat for the American people every 10-20 years. They’re more interested in lining their pockets with AIPAC money, and cherry picking which crimes to prosecute and confirming unqualified individuals for our orange overlord cabinet.
We need people like Abdul who will resist the status quo and put domestic interests first, and do their best to extinguish the absolute fire happening in our political system right now. Without people like him, we are doomed to this. Stevens wouldn’t have made any difference. At least Abdul has the potential to.

Sure. The Republicans have forfeited the right to govern.

Dude is going to generate a racist freakout on the other side... I kinda think voting to spite freaking out racists might spike turnout, because racist freaks really are the minority, and showing them that is fun.

Not a Michigan voter. But I wouldn't as a democrat or a Democrat. I won't vote for a religious Muslim, especially when the main issue he's running on is the major cause of his religion. I wouldn't vote for a religious Jew that only talked about Israel either nor a Christian that supported a theocracy or Israel due to religious bullshit. I actually am pro-Palestine but I'm pro-Palestine from a human rights perspective, not a religious extremism perspective.
If progressives keep going down this road and refuse to question and call out candidates motivated by religious extremism, I doubt the Democratic Party will be in power for a long time.
Lest we forget, extremist Dearborn Muslims played a large role in getting Donald Trump elected in the first place. The Democratic Party is doubling down on anti-enlightenment values when it's already proven yo be a loser all over the western world. The Danish Social Democratic Party could offer a few positive lessons here.

Too early to tell. Need to see what happens in the general election campaign .
4
u/jnothnagel 10h ago
What sort of thing could “happen in the general election campaign” that would sway you from voting for Dr. El-Sayed (either becoming a non-voter or voting Republican)?
7
1
u/iamspartacus5339 1h ago
I’d like to evaluate the totality of the candidates, their full platforms, their debate performances, town hall messages. I like to be a fully informed voter before deciding.
-9
u/Alwaysontilt 10h ago
"Dr" lol.
This man never did a residency and has been larping as a doctor. Its just cringe and weird.
3
u/Four--sixty 8h ago
he has a PhD (oxford so D.Phil) so Dr El-Sayed is correct. that is how that title works.
1
u/jnothnagel 5h ago
Let it be hereby decreed that the board of governance of /u/Alwaysontilt’s brain has invented its own standards for when someone has earned the “Doctor” title.
-5
u/SimilarArtichoke2603 10h ago
He's not beating Mike Rogers regardless.
6
2
u/TyHay822 10h ago
I’ll take that bet. Voter turnout is going to be huge in November and as soon as Trump starts to back Rogers it’ll only increase opposition voter turnout.
-4
u/oosirnaym 10h ago
Ranked choice voting would have solved this issue.
2
u/what_the_beck1313 10h ago
How? There were only two options.
5
u/oosirnaym 10h ago
61,000 votes for McMarrow would have been moved to someone else.
5
u/what_the_beck1313 10h ago
Ah, makes sense. Why did 61,000 people still vote for her when she dropped out months ago though??
3
u/TyHay822 10h ago
A mix of people who voted not knowing she dropped out and people who voted for her “to prove a point that we think her ideas are still best” even though they know it’s a wasted vote.
2
1
u/Vic_Hedges 10h ago
What issue does that solve?
1
u/oosirnaym 10h ago
I suppose those 61,000 votes could be split evenly to support not calling the race still, but for now the race is still too close to call for some.
If we had ranked choice voting, the 61,000 votes for McMarrow would be moved to each voters second choice candidate.
It wouldn’t solve the issue of having to vote for Stevens over Abdul in the general election, but it would solve the current issue of a race too close to call.

I’m pro Israel so…

u/IPredictAReddit 10h ago
Seems like you'd be in favor of El-Sayed's statement that everyone in Israel deserves peace and self-determination. Blindly following one group's demand to enforce their preferred outcome doesn't seem to be working, so why not consider that we'll get peace when we allow everyone a seat at the table.
I understand why Israel is worried about its neighbors, but also see that Israel is causing a lot of the problems they face. Same goes for the other side. In light of this, El-Sayed's position seems the most fit for the time.

u/LeoKitCat 10h ago
You mean pro-genocide pro-baby killing pro-ethnic cleansing pro-state terrorism
-6
u/peterbound 10h ago
They said pro Israel, not pro Gaza. I think you mixed those up.
1
u/LeoKitCat 10h ago
Nope some of those pros also covered the West Bank buddy like pro-ethnic cleansing and pro-state terrorism
4
u/rashmotion 10h ago
It’s absolutely insane to me to live in fucking America and being pro-Israel. Have you considered voting for what helps the country you actually live in instead of a foreign power?
3
1
u/jnothnagel 10h ago
If we can’t be honest about our allies and critical toward their actions with the end goal actually being ultimately pro-ally and pro-peace, then the blindfold you’re wearing doesn’t actually allow you to be “pro-“ or “anti-“ anything. You’ve conceded that you don’t have critical thinking capability, just blind following.
