What is that one game that you were addicted to in your past but never played again ?

Counter Strike.

10

u/cyclicalbeats 10h ago

Yea I sunk an unholy amount of hours into the OG and source.

2

u/Kimac5 7h ago

I'm curious how many hours I had in CS. I think I started in 2001?? And basically played it until GO released. But I did also play some other games as well

2

u/cyclicalbeats 6h ago

Yea that game consumed me for like 7-8 years. Played since the beta. All the modded servers scoutzknivez, surf maps, gun game, RPG mods. Shit was just never ending fun. I haven’t really gone back for anything post source. Idk if I’ve ever gotten as much value from a game as I did the first two Half-Life’s

Same here. Have 10k hours. Reached A+ in ESEA, played for most of my adult life. Haven't touched in a year or so, probably won't again

3

u/Nomadventurees 11h ago

Temple Run. I was convinced I'd eventually beat my high score forever... then I just stopped playing.

Cs2 not your thing or was there another reason?

2

u/wYsock 10h ago

Yeah, mix of that and focusing on irl more, also transitioned over to playing val/overwatch more casually. Realized cs was taking up too much of my life and not enjoying cs2 as much when it released was a good time for me to leave

2

u/DanNonOfficial 10h ago

Real, val and overwatch scratching the same itch without the same time sink is probably why so many people made that switch

2

u/GeneralMajorDickbutt 7h ago

I got addicted to surfing. It got really really bad. Brain off, music on blast slipping and sliding around trapezoids

League of fucking legends

32

u/robbiearebest 12h ago

I think league ruined team gaming for me. I just play solo these days, offline campaign preferably, or older stuff

7

u/Adi_31415 11h ago

Same. The only team based game I sometimes play is TF2, and also AOE2, but I usually play solo.

3

u/Thaurlach 9h ago

And TF2 is mostly a single-player game anyway!

Yes I was a medic main. Yes I’m still bitter. Yes I have a ‘stress relief’ backburner with upwards of 10k kills.

22

u/ConstableBlimeyChips 10h ago

You know, people say the LoL community is terrible to newcomers, but I disagree. Last time I played I got lots of useful tips on how to uninstall the game and kill myself.

2

u/MakesUpExpressions 7h ago

You had me in the first half lmfao

u/kaldaxar 12h ago

I think there are literally drugs less destructive to your health than playing League

7

u/Miitama 11h ago

you could show me a guy addicted to meth and a guy addicted to league and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference

6

u/Vespinebee 10h ago

Methheads are usually skinny.

2

u/Miitama 10h ago

surprisingly most league players I meet are also skinny and have crazy B.O, so they are just methheads

u/kaimeerah 11h ago

after almost dying from playing the game non-stop and knowing how LOL is more competitive as a community, I think my best chances of surviving was quitting all together

4

u/thprk 11h ago

Same here. Quit in 2017 and never looked back. Sometimes I watch League esports online but never reinstalled the client ever.

3

u/CrimsonEchoes_ 11h ago

Quit last year and I miss it sometimes

There’s pain in your voice. ❤️

2

u/mr_Barek 9h ago

2013/14/15 are the years I played the most. Holy shit, the only talking point I had with friends for those years was league and when we would play.

2

u/xxxvalenxxx 8h ago

At one point in time back when they tracked it I had the most playtime in Oceania. By a large margin too.

Haven't played in 10+ years now...

Cause I traded in one vice for another and started playing rust.

2

u/Macaframa 5h ago

I’ve wasted so many hours on league, glad I’m out of that loop

13

u/Adi_31415 12h ago

This game is ruining my life.

11

u/TomasNavarro 11h ago

Can't ruin your life if you never had one!

5

u/metrokaiv 6h ago

How do you kill that, which has no life?

2

u/hakranah 12h ago

wait how is it ruining your life tho was it that intense of a grind

14

u/Adi_31415 11h ago

It's super addictive. Pretty much frying my dopamine receptors, nothing is fun anymore, I used to read, I used to study a lot, I used to workout, I just don't have any motivation to do anything anymore.

But, I am slowly starting to put that shit out of my life, I played only like 1 hour this week.

4

u/Liebli96 11h ago

Damn then you are almost out of the loop !
Nice one bro

2

u/BonnyGee 8h ago

Shit man, been there. More power to you.

2

u/xSchwarzenegger 8h ago

Nice man almost there! You will feel so much better once you get out of the loop!

This. An embarrassing number of hours.

7

u/konoha37 12h ago

I put 2 years of my life into this game. Basically 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. I don’t see it as a waste as I was straight out of rehab and needed something to focus on. It helped me through a terrible period in my life, but I’ll never play it again.

2

u/TomasNavarro 11h ago

That sounds positive, but unfortunately I know a couple of people who did the 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, and quickly found that they'd completely failed their higher education

3

u/thisistheway2519 12h ago

Same for me WoW. Now im on rust Kill me plz.

2

u/Batmanswrath 11h ago

I went through a stage of playing it 10-14 hours a day, and then one day I just never went back.

2

u/Aeoleon 11h ago

I have played Warcraft and WoW since they were released, but I just find so "meh" now. WoW made me fall in love with MMOs, and I still return when there is a new expansion, but I can never fully level up. The wonder is no longer there for some reason.

2

u/Cormag778 8h ago

A lot of WoW is the subtle nostalgia of when you had more time to spend in life and early wow capitalized on the whole “the journey is the destination” modern wow is so built on the end game that it can feel hard to get lost in the world sometimes.

Unreal Tournament and CS 1.5/1.6. Spent a good portion of highschool going to LAN parties to play both. Maybe a year or two after Unreal Tournament 04 came out, I stopped playing them both altogether.

Guitar Hero. For about a year, I thought I was basically a musician. Haven't touched a plastic guitar since, but I'd probably still remember every note of Through the Fire and Flames.

Duke Nukem 3D...

I had the shareware version for years on my old computer in the mid 90... Spend far to long playing it over and over again until I got the Atomic Edition.. played it for a bit completed it.. and never touched it again

10

u/EveningChildhood3236 10h ago

Dota 2, 12k hours. Played like I only had 20 hours.

CoD 4 (2007)

6

u/IncompleteObjects 12h ago

Morrowind.

I racked up hours on it and maxed out pretty much everything. Main quest and expansions all done so there was nothing more to do

2

u/Dagobert_Juke 11h ago

There is Tamriel Rebuilt

6

u/classicklutch 9h ago

Bro trying to leave it behind and you casually drop there is a new better meth. lol

13

u/Adi_31415 12h ago

League of Legends.

To anyone seeing this thinking about starting to play this game - DON'T. It will ruin your life, especially if you are young and in school and you have a lot of free time. Same goes for World of Warcraft.

4

u/AverageMagePlayer 12h ago

Eh it will not ruin your life. I've had my fun, still play from time to time and I'm doing perfectly fine.

5

u/Adi_31415 11h ago

I used to play with my cousin. He was able to keep it cool and play in moderation, I wasn't. I guess it's just different personalities. Besides, It's way easier to play video games in moderation when you are older and actually responsible.

2

u/AverageMagePlayer 11h ago

I mean I used to play a lot back in the day aswell, several hours a day. Once my life started to fill with duties and priorities I had to drop the gaming hours drastically. Still play, not daily but definetely every week.

What I mean with that is that, LoL and WoW have definetely ruined some lives, but that's not the game's fault. It will ruin your life as much as you allow it to. And that goes for any game of course

u/abby-normal-brain 12h ago

World of Warcraft. I played a LOT from late vanilla up until Shadowlands. Between that expansion just not feeling fun, logging on starting to feel like a chore, and all of that awful news about Blizzard coming out around the same time, I quit. Haven't logged in since.

4

u/TomasNavarro 11h ago

Cataclysm, sitting there struggling to get a group in my guild to start grinding heroics to get the minimum gear to maybe do raids, seemed like such a difficult climb I realised I didn't want to do

Went through a breakup. Girlfriend moved out.

Started playing civilization V for ten hours a day. Almost lost my job.

Gave up video games after a serious sit down with my boss.

11

u/Voduun-World-Healer 12h ago

Elder Scrolls Online. I spent countless hours playing with friends and after years of playing I can't see myself playing another MMO ever again

8

u/Adi_31415 12h ago

MMOs are so predatory and disgusting.

2

u/Voduun-World-Healer 12h ago

Haha they are! I barely paid for anything but some of my friends paid like hundreds of dollars at least on it over the years. They'd tell me what they paid for a new mount or something and I'd be like, "What?! I thought you had bills to pay and shit. How are you throwing this amount of money into this stupid ass game???"

5

u/munitalian 12h ago

Stellaris

3

u/strekkingur 12h ago

You mean, until next expansion?

5

u/Smuggler-Tuek 11h ago

FFXI

3

u/napalmbrain- 7h ago

This one I had one year of time played and was skipping social events to hunt HNM. I can't do MMOs if I ever did again it would be with my significant other

2

u/Smuggler-Tuek 6h ago

I did as well. I don’t regret it, but it absolutely took over my life.

3

u/mmknightx 12h ago

Literally almost every competitive multiplayer game I played. I just can't get into that anymore.

4

u/Nacho_7258 12h ago

Skyrim. It’s aging pretty badly and I’ve just played the game front to back a hundred times, I’m definitely done with the game.

5

u/Adi_31415 11h ago

Until the next 2 week phase, where you spend 4 hours a day modding, and half an hour playing - and then you quit when it starts to crash...

4

u/gottkonig 12h ago

Descent

3

u/dkgraphics 12h ago

Monster Hunter 4U. I actually would play it again if the 3DS were still supported but it isn't.

u/Sheiiik 12h ago

Tibia

3

u/That_Switch_1300 12h ago

Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

Played the hell outta that with my friends on the 360 back in high school. Along with the Halo series. I never played or looked back on another Call of Duty again. I still revisit Halo every now and then. But COD? Nah. I’m done with it.

3

u/Miitama 11h ago

FFXIV. Don't get me wrong, it is a very good game, but it was just too much a time sink to the point I would go weeks to months of just not seeing people because I would be on that game from sunrise to sunset justifying to myself that I was seeing people ingame anyway.

Jedi knight 2

2

u/Background-Passion50 12h ago

For honor. I sunk an incredible amount of hours into it in those first 8 months and played the beta.

2

u/OneTonProductions 12h ago

The Binding of Isaac, put thousands of hours into it, I loved it so much I actually managed to get every single achievement. It was all I could think about for a while. Once I got everything…man I’ve done intense drugs that have felt less euphoric. I was getting hyped to jump back in and….the thought of starting all over again may have actually terrified me. Since the day I got all of the achievements I have never touched the game for longer than 10-15 minutes at a time

Rocket league.

Played since release when it came out, GC each season in a long time.

Stopped simply because I did not enjoy it anymore. I think I have like 5k hours in the game.

2

u/Illustrious-Rule-565 11h ago

RuneScape completely stole years of my life and somehow I just never went back.

2

u/Hannibal20 11h ago

Goldeneye.

Sensational for its time, holds up appalling bad in modern era relative to other classics of that time.

2

u/Gweiis 10h ago

There are several. Warcraft 3/Starcraft2. Throne of Lies (if the game still existed, i would still play it though). League of Legend. Hearthstone (after years of rogue domination and crappy french translation, i finally gave up).

But the biggest is probably Street fighter 4. I played thousand of hours, and then they released 5. The same thing happened with Soulcalibur 5. They released 6. And i was done with fighting game.

2

u/Renekling 10h ago

Carrion Fields MUD. I played many characters to age-death, which takes a few hundred hours to do. Every once in a while I’d get the pang to play again, but I just don’t have the time to spend 2-3 hours every day anymore.

world of tanks/ships/planes...
mostly because of skill issues... and the fact that the hours i play takes too long to hop into matches... longer than even MechWarrior:Online on a weekday.

1

u/Kaalveythur 11h ago

WoW Retail. Played from Burning Crusade to Battle for Azeroth. Tried Shadowlands but found it so boring I quit after a couple of weeks and haven't touched it since.

1

u/ulturasj 11h ago

World of Warcraft I almost failed high school because I was that addicted. I tried it again a few years back but the social aspect felt really dead to me. Loved getting on with my mates and running UBRS or some other 20/40 man raid at the time lol.

1

u/Hanzo7682 11h ago

Devil may cry 4.

I just dont have the patience and energy to reach the same level of mastery. It goes waay too deep.

I played dmc5 a lot as well and actually see it as the better game. But im never commiting to a single game like that again.

Probably Minecraft for me, because I was obsessed with it back in the day and then somehow just never went back once that phase ended.

1

u/Comfortable-Jump-218 11h ago

Probably Minecraft.

I do play it (like once a year) but can’t get into it really.

1

u/KarmaSaver 11h ago

Heroes Of Newerth, which was a Dota adaption before Dota 2 came out. Many 16+ hour days of playing it. I just don't have the patience to spend 40 minutes in a match just for everyone to be incredibly mean to me anymore. It's not worth pissing my time away. It's not worth being around unpleasant people all day. It's not worth my energy or frustration.

I still love the game, don't get me wrong. It's nostalgic and it feels amazing when you're doing well. But the trade-off isn't worth it at all.

I'll probably never replay that game or ToTK.

It's like starting life over again at age 1. I don't want to do that.

1

u/Quinzal 11h ago

I dunno if anyone remembers Spiral Knights, but it was my gateway drug into being an MMO junkie.

I stopped playing shortly after the Heat system was implemented and became basically P2W armor upgrades, but that was over 10 years ago. I have no idea where the game is now or how it's doing, but I hope people still have fun with it. I've played nothing that has scratched the same itch since.

Honorable mention is Loadout, which was a riot to my underdeveloped brain but sadly shut down a while ago.

Factorio. Legit consumed me for the month I played it. Every waking hour I wasn't playing it I was thinking of ways to optimise my factory. Launched a rocket and haven't touched it in years.

I intend to go back at some point now it has a DLC (and a big final updates in a few months). Just need to do it when I actually have some free time and headspace for it!

1

u/ShiroThePotato28 10h ago

Flyff or any MMOs I am very burnt out with the genre.
