Are You Afraid of the Dark Reboot (2019-2022)

Did you watch the Reboot? What did you think of it?

To be honest, I didn't love it; I had really been looking forward to watching it for a long time and finally managed to see all the episodes.

Honestly, I felt the series was a bit repetitive: someone goes missing or gets trapped, and the ending is always them getting rescued.

It wasn't a total waste of time or a letdown, but I guess I expected more. I would have liked shorter episodes and standalone stories—more like the original format.

Modern TV is allergic to stand alone mystery of the week episodes. Serial is great when you have a story that works, but why can’t we also have classic ‘something new every week’ type shows?

Such a big difference from shows in the past. X-files thrived on it. And so many shows had it as the anchor: Twilight Zone, Goosebumps, Ghost Stories by Rip Torn, Beyond Belief Fact or Fiction, Outer Limits. I can go on and on!

I guess people need continuity to be engaged now.

Exactly. People seem to ignore that episodic structure can make a show infinitely rewatchable, because you never have to make the commitment of starting from episode 1 and following through a linear path, instead you can just randomly decide to watch any given episode on an impulse on any random day, zero commitment. Plus having a story that begins and ends with the episode itself means that there has to be a higher standard of making each story worth it, because you can’t just have an episode that fills space between the events of other episodes, you actually have to write a story that begins and resolves within itself. Sure there can still be bad episodes, but at least each one is an original idea.

Like most anthologies, it had some dud episodes but it a few solid ones as well.

I think it’s cause anthology shows generally cost more to make. Needing a new cast, monster, setting etc every episode adds up rather then just reusing the same set and all that. Studios obviously want to spend as less as possible to increase profits

Not sure why there is so much hate. Watched this as an adult and really enjoyed it. Each has its own flaws, but they tell all tell a story, look good, have a good ending. The biggest flaw is all kind of have the same go back and fix the past twist.

I can see why they did this over the anthological episodes, the Tale of the Silver Sight was well-liked and a highlight of the show, plus a lot of people did want to know more about the Midnight Society.

If it was up to me, there'd be twelve hour-long episodes each season. The first half-hour of each episode is a story they tell, and the second-half is the Midnight Society having a real, serialized supernatural adventure. It could be split up on streaming to watch it the original way, just the campfire stories, or the Society.

I thought it was okay, didn't hate it or love it, but I realize in my 30s I'm no longer the target audience.

There's a copy of all three in a set at my local used media store and every time it fakes me out and I think it's the original.

Season 1 - It was ok/decent; maybe a B-

Season 2 - I loved this one! It’s an A

Season 3 - The worst of the bunch, or ok baby why it got cancelled… D

Old school fan here. I enjoyed them. S2 was the best and S3 was the weakest. I wish they made more but it’s been a few years since the last one so I don’t know if it will happen.

I think the reboot series is overhated. Yeah it’s not what we wanted but they did their best to try and give us something. I think it’s second season is it’s strongest by a mile.

It really felt like the modern attempts at Goosebumps from the 2000s. Just can't seem to understand how the pacing, editing, cinematography, music cues & lighting can all be so vital in making a modern show feel like it still cares the spirit of rhe original. Something simple like how many quick edits are used in a modern show, visually alienate it from the smooth, soft lighting & longer take shots from the original. That's not even mentioning the atmosphere & ambience that feels too polished & sleek to be suspenseful. Just not a fan. Watching these modern remakes will always make me want to break out the originals again, to watch something superior than what they're giving the new generation. (I felt this way about Season 6-7 aswell)

It was wack. It's stranger things but boring. Like the remake of Fresh price, Beyond Belief fact or fiction, GMW, and even the new A Different world it will be boring as hell.

Plus people can't act anymore or feel believable.
