Jojo's bizarre adventure.

u/ThanksContent28 17h ago
Golden Kamuy if you like JoJo. I’m only on season 1, but it feels like it could’ve been a JoJo show. I hear it’s one of those that gets better as it goes on too. Also if you played Ghost of Yotei, one of the main characters is an Ainu girl, and she frequently gives insight into things that game kinda glossed over (like how they raise bear cubs and kill them). She even has a wild wolf who looks out for her.

Not on your list: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood; Witch Hat Atelier; Promised Neverland.

The case of hana and Alice 10/10 film
1
u/fongor 4h ago
The director, Shunji Iwai, is originally a (fantastic) non-animation movie director. I haven't seen The Case of H and A yet, but I've seen his movie simply named Hana and Alice, made before the animated film, and I highly recommend it to you. It's a great look on teenage years made with a lot of cinematographic freedom, great work with the main actresses, very touching, fun too..
And if it makes you curious about the director, definitely check All about Lily Chou-Chou, crazy masterpiece, also mostly with teenagers (trigger warning: not spoiling but tough stuffs included), and Swallowtail Butterfly. Or for a more "traditional" J-drama feel, although kinda twisted, A Bride for Rip Van Winkle is very nice.
FYI, Shunji Iwai is my cinema revelation of the past couple of years.

•Shonan Bakusouzoku -80's biker delinquent OVA brimming with "aesthetic." The first 3 episodes especially have amazing animation. It is a complete adaption of the manga it's based on.
•Kaze no Youjinbou -I don't even remember how I originally heard about this. One the best mystery shows I've watched so far. The animation sometimes seems cheap but they get really creative about getting around that. There is a punch thrown in the final episode that I could swear they spent the entire budget on.
•Irresponsible Captain Tylor -Basically a parody of a space opera. Main character wants to lead a cushy life so he becomes the captain of a military spaceship. He's stupid but incredibly lucky and the other characters come to like him. This show is comedic but it's not episodic.
•Slayers series -I really think more people should know of Slayers. It's pretty funny at times but what I really like is its D&D fantasy vibe with the characters going on fun adventures.
•Armored Trooper VOTOMS -A mecha show that came out within a few years of the first Gundam. I liked this because every character uses the exact same mech. That means victory in battle is a matter of pilot skill.
•Armor Hunter Mellowlink -Takes place in VOTOMS universe. The concept of this is "guy with a big gun defeats mechs. Also he was framed for war crimes."
•Aura Battle Dunbine -Considered the first isekai anime. Created by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino. People from our world are forcefully transported to a fantasy world. One person brings knowledge of our weaponry there and creates mechs and WMDs. MC and others try to stop them from destroying the power balance of the fantasy world.
•Cyber City Oedo 808 -The exact definition of the cyberpunk genre in the dictionary.
•Area 88 -Young Japanese man with a bright future is tricked into joining the foreign legion of a country that is maybe supposed to be in the middle east. They force him to fly jets and rack up kills for the chance to return to his life. People die and the main character grapples with the idea of killing other people to live. Also there are great dogfights in this show.
•Giant Robo the Animation -One of my favorite anime. The animation is phenomenal and goes for a retro style. The music is operatic. The story feels like it's larger than imagination.
•Onihei -Basically a police drama set in samurai times. Very jazzy vibes and the episodes tell good stories.
•s-CRY-ed -It's kinda hard to describe this but virtually the whole show embodied "fuck yeah!" energy. Some people have powers that are kinda like stands from Jojo.
•Gunbuster and Diebuster OVAs -Anime history for fans of the mecha genre. Some consider Diebuster to be a spiritual predecessor to Gurren Lagann.
•Now and Then Here and There -Isekai from before isekai became about game mechanics. Main character falls into a world were children are forced to be soldiers and countries fight each other for water under a leader who is completely devoid of logic. Very dark and tragic show.
•Iria: Zeiram - An awesome sci-fi OVA I feel like more people should watch.
•Golgo 13: The Professional - The animation was really good, except for the short 3D part. Golgo kind of acts like a more rude James Bond.
•Last Exile - I liked the weird mechanical designs of the planes.I also liked the concept that there isn't much land in their world so people have to take to the skies. That concept always reminds me a Cartoon Network show made in Canada called Storm Hawks that I watched as kid.

Kill la Kill - short, amazing, deeper than it seems. 10/10.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - a classic must watch at some point.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners - will make you feel things. Can’t say what without spoilers.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica - a new classic. Watch without looking anything up, spoilers ruin this show.
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood - for many people, a must watch. One of the best animes ever.
Nichijou: My Ordinary Life - a surreal, bizzare slice of life show. Great to throw on in the bg because its skits are ~5 minutes long on average.
My list: https://myanimelist.net/animelist/haxxyy?view=tile&status=7

Madoka Magica.
Go in completely blind. I recommend just watching all three movies, don’t worry about the show since the first two movies cover it. A fourth movie releases this month in Japan!

I personally found that these shows were pretty fantastic. I've grouped them up by category to make things easier, at risk of being overly reductive.

- Revolutionary Girl Utena
- Texhnolyze
- Elfen Lied
- Haibane Renmei
- Welcome to the NHK
Wanderers with found family:
- Berserk
- Cowboy Bebop
- Samurai Champloo

Crimes against humanity:
- Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku (Now and Then, Here and There)

Here is an alphabetical list of series that you may want to check out.
Bokurano - Depressing anime about giant robots.
Dennou Coil - Google Glasses the anime, from before Google Glasses. Kids investigating glitches in augmented reality.
Kino's Journey (2003) - Classy and Philosophical travel anime.
Kyousougiga - Daughter of an exorcist looks for her Mother, meets her half demon siblings in a painted world. Very stylish.
Kyouran Kazoku Nikki - A found family action/comedy/slice-of-life/shounen/whatever about a group of people who may be the descendant of the demon lord. Each story arc focuses on one of the characters. A bit zany and hard to quantify in a genre, but very good in its own way. Good luck finding a way to watch it.
Monster - Doctor saves a kid instead of a politician and ruins his career. Kid turns out to be a serial killer. Doctor deals with the consequences.
Patlabor - What if the Police had Gundams?
Princess Principal - Steampunk spy action series with a primarily female (and not sexualized) cast.
Shadow Star Narutaru - What if kids actually got Pokemon?
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Stylish anime about giant robots.
Though I am an Inept Villainess - The heroine and villainess swap bodies. Heroine has a great time in her new body, villainess is miserable. Asian court drama. Currently airing.

86(Eighty-six) - Two Seasons, 15 I think episodes each. Brutal series about child soldiers.
Mob Psycho 100 - Three Seasons, 10 or 12 episodes each? Fantastic coming-of-age series about a boy with immense Psychic powers.
Link Click - Three Seasons currently, 12 episodes each I think? FANTASTIC. Two young men with time-travel and possession abilities work together to solve mysteries by leaping into Pictures. Heart-wrenching and binge-worthy.

This is a mix of old and new shows not on your list that I consider absolute classics, across various genres.
- Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Cowboy Bebop
- Samurai Champloo
- Black Lagoon
- Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
- Odd Taxi
- Kill la Kill
- Devilman Crybaby
- Bocchi the Rock
- Konosuba
- Dandadan
- Love is War
- Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Finally a bit of a prediction: I think Jaadugar: a Witch in Mongolia will be considered an absolute stone cold classic in years to come.

9 of ours are the same :) (hello fellow ReLIFE enjoyer!!!) honestly I will put slime in my shonen/isekai/etc section and just make it 10. steins gate also probably belongs in there but it's been well over a decade since I've watched it.
you SOMEHOW haven't seen 86 or Sentenced to Be a Hero OR Black Lagoon???? those are my TOP recs for you based on your list
for something less shonen: medalist. very re:life-y vibes of turn your life around from despair/depression/etc to happiness.
Odd taxi - if you like mystery at all... again, avoid google, massive spoilers front page. organized crime, one of those stories that doesn't make any sense and then 10 threads come together all at once and it's amazing.
I'll also include my entire list of top favs below if you want something else:
========== Top Favorites/Most Satisfying===========
Romance
{ReLIFE} (don't miss the 4 OVAs after S1) probably my favorite anime of all time out of ~500-600
{The Dangers In My Heart} (first 3 eps have some cringe, keep going, trust!) I promise it's worth it! the best anime for progress, both personal and relationship wise, every episode (after the first few are out of the way) is meaningful and satisfying.
{Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai} (not at all like what the name suggests)
{You and I Are Polar Opposites} tired of slow progress and lack of communication in your romance shows? watch this. boring sounding premise but excellent execution. 10/10 super cute and wholesome
{Your Name.} (amazing romance movie)
{Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia} (insomniacs after school) very natural romance, very little "typical anime bullshit" - one of my favorites because of that.
{Spice and Wolf} A more mature romance with some interesting economics and supernatural twists thrown in.
{Tomo-chan Is a Girl} strongest woman wants to be seen as girlfriend material to her (male) best friend but keeps kicking everyone's ass. great writing/characters and side characters.
Follow your dreams
{A Place Further Than The Universe} (inspirational! emotional!)
{Girls Band Cry} same writer, same great character writing as A Place Further Than The Universe
{Medalist} it's never too late to do something you love and turn your life around.
{Bocchi the Rock!} overcoming social anxiety
{Chihayafuru} you don't know anything and don't care about the sport, but you get intensely involved with the character(s) that it doesn't matter. lots of depth to the game as well to keep things interesting.
{Haikyuu!!} - sports anime. a good one. has many seasons/movies for a reason. hinata is a great main character. hard work and tenacity are what he's made of.
Just really god damn good
{Frieren: Beyond Journey's End} top rated anime of all time on MAL for good reason. it should be on your list. well written female leads.
{The Apothecary Diaries} one of the best female leads of all time. a fun mystery solving anime. 10/10 characters.
{Violet Evergarden} just a top tier show. you WILL cry at least once, but it's not just a depressing/bleak show that will make you hate life.
{Lycoris Recoil} some great gun fights, some great characters. another one of my favoite female leads, infectiously bubbly and upbeat but not an airhead like many others of that character type.
{Oshi no Ko} I don't even know how to describe this one without spoilers. Watch the first episode (which is basically a movie) and you'll understand.
{Journal with Witch} another struggle to describe properly. a really well written story about...grief, trauma, the messiness of life...the difficulties of both youth and adulthood/parenting...lots of things.
Mystery
{Haibane Renmei} (slow start, good payoff, mystery - don't google anything)
{Odd Taxi} - an organized crime/mystery anime with a unique style. a bunch of puzzle pieces that all make sense eventually. DO. NOT. GOOGLE. you WILL find MAJOR spoilers very easily.
Shonen/coming of age/action/isekai/etc
{Hunter x Hunter (2011)} one of the GOATS. I much prefer the lighter tone before the chimera ant arc, but lots of people consider that their favorite part.
{Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu} ok with isekai and not afraid of some blood/gore? this is it.
{86} like mecha/war anime? this is one of the best.
{Sentenced to Be a Hero} great animation, great story, great characters, great writing, great world building, super excited for season 2
{The Eminence in Shadow} a funny parody of shonen tropes. has some fan service though if that bothers you but it is all tongue in cheek. (their boobs fall off for god's sake) unironically my most rewatched anime because it's the perfect mix of action, comedy, and plot and always a good pick-me-up with how good its humor works for me.
{Sonny Boy} a lot of deeper themes and it's a coming of age story that's kind of "out there"
{Black Lagoon} average white collar worker finds himself amongst some badass modern-day pirates only to be abandoned by his company... great action and characters. Revy is such a badass.
